On the Top Mass Reconstruction Using Leptons

    Get PDF
I discuss the feasibility of measuring the top quark mass by the using of final states with leptons and J/\psi at hadron colliders. I also investigate the impact of matrix-element corrections to the HERWIG simulation of top decays.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Primordial Nucleosynthesis: Accurate Predictions

    Get PDF
A new accurate evaluation of primordial light nuclei abundances is presented. The proton to neutron conversion rates have been corrected to take into account radiative effects, finite nucleon mass, thermal and plasma corrections. The theoretical uncertainty on 4He is so reduced to the order of 0.1%.Comment: 4 pages, Talk given at the International Workshop on Particles in Astrophysics and Cosmology: From Theory to Observation, Valencia 199

Semileptonic and rare B meson decays into a light pseudoscalar meson

    Get PDF
In the framework of a QCD relativistic potential model we evaluate the form factors describing the exclusive decays B => \pi l nu and B => K l+ l-. The present calculation extends a previous analysis of B meson decays into light vector mesons. We find results in agreement with the data, when available, and with the theoretical constraints imposed by the Callan-Treiman relation and the infinite heavy quark mass limit.Comment: 11 pages LaTeX + 2 figure

Review of Recent Searches for Rare and Forbidden Dilepton Decays of Charmed Mesons

    Get PDF
I briefly review the results of recent searches for flavor-changing neutral current and lepton-flavor and lepton-number violating decays of D+, Ds, and D0 mesons (and their antiparticles) into modes containing muons and electrons. The primary focus is the results from Fermilab charm hadroproduction experiment E791. E791 examined 24 pi,l,l and K,l,l decay modes of D+ and Ds and l+l- decay modes of D0. Limits presented by E791 for 22 rare and forbidden dilepton decays of D mesons were more stringent than those obtained from previous searches, or else were the first reported.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, uses psfig.sty and RevTeX, submitted to Modern Physics Letters A, based on a Fermilab "Joint Theoretical and Experimental" tal

On the miracle of the Coleman-Glashow and other baryon mass formulas

    Get PDF
Due to a new measurement of the Xi(0) mass, the Coleman-Glashow formula for the baryon octet e.m. masses (derived using unbroken SU(3) is satisfied to an extraordinary level of precision. The same unexpected precision exists for the Gell-Mann Okubo formula and for its octet-decuplet extension (G.Morpurgo,Phys.Rev.Lett. 68(1992)139).We show that the old question "why do they work so well?" is now answered by the general parameterization method.Comment: 12 pages,Late

Heavy Quark Lifetimes, Mixing and CP Violation

    Get PDF
This paper emphasizes four topics that represent some of the year's highlights in heavy quark physics. First of all, a review is given of charm lifetime measurements and how they lead to better understanding of the mechanisms of charm decay. Secondly, the CLEO collaboration's new search for charm mixing is reported, which significantly extends the search for new physics in that sector. Thirdly, important updates in Bs mixing are summarized, which result in a new limit on the mass difference, and which further constrain the unitarity triangle. Finally, the first efforts to measure CP violation in the B system are discussed. Results are shown for the CDF and ALEPH measurements of sin(2beta), as well as the CLEO branching fraction measurements of B-->Kpi,pipi, which have implications for future measurements of alpha.Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures. A priori mixing of mesons and the |Delta I|=1/2 rule in K\to\pi\pi

We consider the hypothesis of a priori mixings in the mass eigenstates of mesons to obtain the |Delta I|=1/2 rule in K\to\pi\pi. The Hamiltonian responsible for the transition is the strong interacting one. The experimental data are described using the isospin symmetry relations between the strong coupling constants

Energy barrier in the two-Higgs model

    Get PDF
The electroweak model is extended by a second Higgs doublet and a numerical investigation of static, finite energy classical solutions is performed. The results indicate that for a large domain of the parameters of the Higgs potential, the energy barrier between topologically distinct vacua of the Lagrangian is constituted by a bisphaleron.Comment: 19 pages, including 4 eps figures, LaTex format, new results include

Particle Physics Probes Of Extra Spacetime Dimensions

The possibility that spacetime is extended beyond the familiar 3+1-dimensions has intrigued physicists for a century. Indeed, the consequences of a dimensionally richer spacetime would be profound. Recently, new theories with higher dimensional spacetimes have been developed to resolve the hierarchy problem in particle physics. These scenarios make distinct predictions which allow for experiment to probe the existence of extra dimensions in new ways. We review the conceptual framework of these scenarios, their implications in collider and short-range gravity experiments, their astrophysical and cosmological effects, as well as the constraints placed on these models from present data.Comment: Submitted to Annual Review of Nuclear and Particle Science, 29 page
