General flux to a trap in one and three dimensions
The problem of the flux to a spherical trap in one and three dimensions, for
diffusing particles undergoing discrete-time jumps with a given radial
probability distribution, is solved in general, verifying the Smoluchowski-like
solution in which the effective trap radius is reduced by an amount
proportional to the jump length. This reduction in the effective trap radius
corresponds to the Milne extrapolation length.Comment: Accepted for publication, in pres
Sensitivity to the KARMEN Timing Anomaly at MiniBooNE
We present sensitivities for the MiniBooNE experiment to a rare exotic pion
decay producing a massive particle, Q^0. This type of decay represents one
possible explanation for the timing anomaly reported by the KARMEN
collaboration. MiniBooNE will be able to explore an area of the KARMEN signal
that has not yet been investigated
Vlasov Equation In Magnetic Field
The linearized Vlasov equation for a plasma system in a uniform magnetic
field and the corresponding linear Vlasov operator are studied. The spectrum
and the corresponding eigenfunctions of the Vlasov operator are found. The
spectrum of this operator consists of two parts: one is continuous and real;
the other is discrete and complex. Interestingly, the real eigenvalues are
infinitely degenerate, which causes difficulty solving this initial value
problem by using the conventional eigenfunction expansion method. Finally, the
Vlasov equation is solved by the resolvent method.Comment: 15 page
Cutting Tools in Finishing Operations for CNC Rapid Manufacturing Processes: Experimental Studies
This paper reports an advanced approach in the application of CNC machining for rapid manufacturing processes (CNC-RM). The aim of this study is to improve the quality of machined parts by introducing different cutting tools during finishing operations. As the cutting is performed in different directions, the surfaces presented on part can be classified into several categories. Therefore, suitable cutting tools are assigned to machine particular surfaces and to improve the quality. Experimental studies have been carried out by fabricating several parts based on the suggested approach. The results provide further support for implementing this approach in rapid machining processes

Large-N theory of strongly commensurate dirty-bosons: absence of transition in two dimensions
The spherical limit of strongly commensurate dirty-bosons is studied
perturbatively at weak disorder and numerically at strong disorder in two
dimensions (2D). We argue that disorder is not perfectly screened by
interactions, and consequently that the ground state in the effective Anderson
localisation problem always remains localised. As a result there is only a
gapped Mott insulator phase in the theory. Comparisons with other studies and
the parallel with disordered fermions in 2D are discussed. We conjecture that
while for the physical cases N=2 (XY) and N=1 (Ising) the theory should have
the ordered phase, it may not for N=3 (Heisenberg).Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures. Minor typographical errors correcte
Substance use in clinical high risk for psychosis: a review of the literature
AimIn the literature, there is evidence suggesting an association between substance use and psychosis. However, little is known about substance use in those who may be in the pre-psychotic phase, that is, those who are putatively prodromal are considered to be at clinical high risk (CHR) of developing psychosis. MethodsWe conducted a review of publications measuring patterns and rates of substance use in CHR for psychosis individuals and the effects on the transition to psychosis. ResultsOf 5527 potentially relevant research papers, 10 met inclusion criteria of CHR subjects and specifically mentioned substance use in the sample. The results of these studies varied. Cannabis, alcohol and tobacco/nicotine were reported as the most commonly used substances. There was limited information on the changes in patterns of use over time. Two out of the ten studies found a significant association between the use of substances and subsequent transition to psychosis. In one of these studies, substance abuse was a predictor of psychosis when included as a variable in a prediction algorithm. In the other study, the abuse of cannabis and nicotine was associated with transition to psychosis. ConclusionsWe found limited evidence to suggest that increased rates of substance use may be associated with transition to psychosis. However, further prospective research examining the association between substance use and transition to psychosis is required before any firm conclusions can be made
Renormalization in Quantum Mechanics
We implement the concept of Wilson renormalization in the context of simple
quantum mechanical systems. The attractive inverse square potential leads to a
\b function with a nontrivial ultraviolet stable fixed point and the Hulthen
potential exhibits the crossover phenomenon. We also discuss the implementation
of the Wilson scheme in the broader context of one dimensional potential
problems. The possibility of an analogue of Zamolodchikov's function in
these systems is also discussed.Comment: 16 pages, UR-1310, ER-40685-760. (Additional references included.
