The great exodus of 1939 and other exiles of the 20th Century

In spite of being a historic constant and a characteristic phenomenon of the 20th century, the subject exile is still little valued by contemporary historiography´. The civil war from 1936 to 1939 and the Francoist triumph provoked an exile without precedent in recent Catalonian history. This exile was decisive in the preservation of Catalan culture (persecuted by the Franco regime in Catalonia itself), as well as for the continuity of Catalan self-government, the Generalitat of Catalonia. It was also an extremely important platform for the democratic opposition to Francoism, although it lost its political weight around the nineteen sixties. At that time, though, new waves of exiles took place caused by the fight against the dictatorship, but they were in no way related to the scale of those from the civil war in the thirties. At the dictators death many people returned home, but the fragility of the democracy born from the political transition process brought new exiles. In order to know more in detail on such an important subject it is necessary to promote a culturally institutionalised process that makes possible its systematic study, and it is also necessary that the analysis of this phenomenon become a top priority aim of study for historiography and for all human sciences

Ferran Soldevila (Barcelona, 1894-1971) va ser un dels historiadors catalans més importants del segle XX. Compromès amb la represa cultural i nacional catalanes contemporànies, va donar suport a la Generalitat republicana en els difícils moments de la Guerra civil de 1936-1939. Això li comportà un exili a la República francesa que no va poder abandonar fins a 1943, quan retornà a Barcelona i s'incorporà a la resistència antidictatorial. La seva actitud resistent afectà tant l'àmbit polític com el cultural, fins al punt que es pot dir que tota la seva producció historiogràfica i literària del moment va tenir aquest caràcter combatiu. No en va, com ell mateix va reconèixer, tota la seva actuació va respondre a un objectiu normalitzador que ell sintetitzava en la frase: «Fer de Catalunya un poble normal».Ferran Soldevila (Barcelona, 1894-1971) was one of the most important Catalan historians of the 20th century. Committed to the contemporary revival of Catalan culture and nation, he supported the Republican Generalitat during the difficult time of the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. This led him to exile in the French Republic, which he could not leave until 1943, when he returned to Barcelona and joined the resistance against Francos dictatorship. His resistant attitude aff ected both the political and cultural area to such an extent that we might say all his historiographical and literary work of the time had this combative nature. As he himself acknowledged, its no surprise that all his actions responded to a desire to normalise, which he summed up in the phrase «Making Catalonia a normal nation»

Soldevila és la figura central del cànon historiogràfic català. La seva obra, capdavantera en molts aspectes, ha de ser considerada emblemàtica a l'hora de fer la síntesi entre la tradició historiogràfica i la innovació i la modernitat. La seva síntesi d'història de Catalunya —la primera de la historiografia contemporània— i els seus treballs monogràfics sobre l'edat mitjana catalana tenen en comú el desig de fer de la història de Catalunya un referent europeu, i de posar el país dins la universalitat. Va saber fer la síntesi entre historiografia i pensament polític. Soldevila va posar sempre l'estudi del passat català al servei de la reivindicació nacional i de Catalunya, sense que per això disminuís el rigor i l'objectivitat científica de la seva obra. His synthesis of the history of Catalonia, the first in contemporary historiography, and his monographic works on the Catalan Middle Ages share a desire to make Catalan history a benchmark for Europe and to place his country within universality. He was able to fuse historiography and political thought. Soldevila always placed the study of Catalonia’s past at the service of national and Catalan demands, without this diminishing the thoroughness or scientific objectivity of his work. He was also a top class journalist and his articles have great documentary value

Computational study of Aromaticity in Porphyrinoid Systems and Photosensitizers from Chemical Bonding Descriptors

291 p.La presente tesis está dividida en dos bloques. El primer bloque se centra en una de las propiedadesafectadas por el error de deslocalización, la aromaticidad, presente en algunas aproximaciones delfuncional de la densidad. Se estudia el carácter aromático de sistemas una familia de porfirínas simples,una serie de anulenos y un anillo de seis porfirínas. También se discute el método computacionalapropiado para caracterizar la estructura electrónica de moléculas aromáticas medianas y grandes.Siguiendo la misma línea, en el segundo bloque de la tesis se han examinado diferentes familias defotosensibilizadores y catalizadores para diseñar un protocolo riguroso para el estudio de la estructuraelectrónica, la simulación de espectros UV-Vis y para el cálculo de potenciales redox. Losfotosensibilizadores son moléculas captadoras de luz que presentan excitaciones de transferencia decarga. La simulación de estas excitaciones está afectada también por las deficiencias de lasaproximaciones al funcional de la densidad
