    Influence of albumin on the tribological behavior of Ag-Ti (C, N) thin films for orthopedic implants

    With the increase of elderly population and the health problems arising nowadays, such as cancer, knee and hip joint prostheses are widely used worldwide. It is estimated that 20% of hip replacement surgeries simply fail after 5 years, due to wear loosening, instability and infection. In this paper it is reported the study of advanced materials with the ability to overcome some of these drawbacks. The development of ceramic coatings, based on carbonitrides of transition metals, such as TiCN, doped with silver, Ag, may represent an effective solution. Thin films of Ag-TiCN were produced by dc reactive magnetron sputtering with silver contents ranging from 4 to 8 at. %. The physical, chemical, structural, morphological/topographical, mechanical and tribological properties were evaluated. The tribological tests were performed in a unidirectional wear simulator, pin on disc, being the antagonists of a ceramic Al2O3 ball, and using simulate body fluids as lubricant. Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) in HBSS were chosen, in order to evaluate the lubrication ability of the solution containing the protein, albumin. The results revealed that the coatings with Ag content ranging from 4 to 8 at. %, were the most promising, as the tribological properties were superior to the results reported by other authors, which also developed Ag-TiCN coatings containing similar Ag contents and using similar test conditions.     Somatic senses required for the emotional design of upper limb prosthesis

    Despite the technological advances associated with prostheses, the total embodiment is still the great challenge in the segment of assistive technology. One of the main aspects is that the bionic member’s sensibility is not responsive to the environment that surrounds it. The purpose of this study aims to identify the perceptual modalities of the somatic senses that are required for a more sensible prosthesis. The methodological strategy contemplates literary research and proposes an interrelationship between neuroscience with philosophical/cultural studies, which regards the different concepts of sensory experience. Such data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.     A new electromagnetic actuation system on an industrial sewing machine with on-line efficiency monitoring

    This paper briefly reviews the study to evaluate the standard presser foot performance and a new actuation set-up to avoid the bouncing and the lack of fabric control. The compression force and displacement waveforms are also presented and widely discussed, as well as the seam’s quality analysis. A spectral (Fast Fourier Transform and Harmonic Distortion) analysis on the obtained waveforms, as well as an Admissible Displacement Limits (ADL) analysis are also described as important techniques to be used to supervise the presser foot force and to monitor the feeding efficiency. ADL have proved to be a better method. Further research should be undertaken in this area, in order to achieve, in a near future, a closed loop control of the presser foot.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT

    A dynamic approach to teaching LSS at universities

    Alongside the European Students of Industrial Engineering and Management (ESTIEM) a team of students from the University of Minho, in cooperation with a corporate partner, developed a free and scalable Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Green-Belt level course for Engineering students. Purpose: The authors aim to depict how free access to LSS Green-Belt knowledge before graduation can positively impact both engineering education and the students when in real-life projects. The purpose is not to build on existing literature, but to provide a practical teaching structure. Methodology: The authors chose to follow the hypothetico-deductive method which consists of formulating hypotheses and comparing them with real-life brought up from their personal experiences while teaching the course. Findings: This case study found a positive impact on both the students responsible for facilitating the training sessions, as well as the ones receiving practical and theoretical knowledge. With more than 60 course graduates, this model is generating positive results in growing awareness for LSS methods. Practical implications: This paper describes a practical application of a novel approach to teaching LSS in Universities along the obstacles surpassed to design it, blending it in the course curricula. It aims to foster similar implementations in other institutions. Originality: A teaching system built with students for students is scalable, low-cost, and highly engaging. Its deployment not only shows how it is possible to advance education by blending an existing LSS course structure but also how students can greatly benefit from a deeper LSS knowledge before their graduation.(undefined

    Natural and anthropogenic factors in the Guadalquivir estuary affect the abundance of anchovy in the Gulf of Cadiz (SW Spain)

    The Gulf of Cadiz socio-ecosystem is characterized by a focal ecosystem component –the estuary of the Guadalquivir River– that has an in uence on the marine ecosystem –serves as a nursery area– and at the same time concentrates a great number of sectoral human activities. This nursery role particularly affects the anchovy fishery, which is the most economically and culturally important fishery in the region. As a transition zone between terrestrial and marine environments, estuaries are particularly sensitive to human activities, either developed directly at the aquatic environment or its surroundings. A dam 110 km upstream from the river mouth regulates freshwater input (mainly for agriculture purposes) into the estuary with consequences on turbidity and salinity. Using time series analysis on 18 years of monthly data from an estuarine monitoring program we (1) quantify the effects that natural (plankton, temperature, winds) and anthropogenic-influenced variables (freshwater volume, turbidity, salinity) have on the abundance of anchovy larvae and juveniles, and (2) relate the abundance of these estuarine-resident early stages to the abundance of adult anchovy in the sea. Water management stands out as a key node where potentially con icting interests (agriculture, power generation, aquaculture, fisheries) converge. Linking land-based activities to its impact on stock biomass represents the main challenge to ecosystem-based management in this particular regional sea. By focusing on the effects that these activities ultimately have on the anchovy fishery –via recruitment– our study aims to contribute to the process of making the ecosystem approach operational in the Gulf of Cadiz
