Altered brainstem responses to modafinil in schizophrenia: implications for adjunctive treatment of cognition.
Candidate pro-cognitive drugs for schizophrenia targeting several neurochemical systems have consistently failed to demonstrate robust efficacy. It remains untested whether concurrent antipsychotic medications exert pharmacodynamic interactions that mitigate pro-cognitive action in patients. We used functional MRI (fMRI) in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled within-subject crossover test of single-dose modafinil effects in 27 medicated schizophrenia patients, interrogating brainstem regions where catecholamine systems arise to innervate the cortex, to link cellular and systems-level models of cognitive control. Modafinil effects were evaluated both within this patient group and compared to a healthy subject group. Modafinil modulated activity in the locus coeruleus (LC) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) in the patient group. However, compared to the healthy comparison group, these effects were altered as a function of task demands: the control-independent drug effect on deactivation was relatively attenuated (shallower) in the LC and exaggerated (deeper) in the VTA; in contrast, again compared to the comparison group, the control-related drug effects on positive activation were attenuated in LC, VTA and the cortical cognitive control network. These altered effects in the LC and VTA were significantly and specifically associated with the degree of antagonism of alpha-2 adrenergic and dopamine-2 receptors, respectively, by concurrently prescribed antipsychotics. These sources of evidence suggest interacting effects on catecholamine neurons of chronic antipsychotic treatment, which respectively increase and decrease sustained neuronal activity in LC and VTA. This is the first direct evidence in a clinical population to suggest that antipsychotic medications alter catecholamine neuronal activity to mitigate pro-cognitive drug action on cortical circuits
Extremal Black Hole/CFT Correspondence in (Gauged) Supergravities
We extend the investigation of the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence
to large classes of rotating black hole solutions in gauged and ungauged
supergravities. The correspondence, proposed originally for four-dimensional
Kerr black holes, asserts that the quantum states in the near-horizon region of
an extremal rotating black hole are holographically dual to a two-dimensional
chiral theory whose Virasoro algebra arises as an asymptotic symmetry of the
near-horizon geometry. In fact in dimension D there are [(D-1)/2] commuting
Virasoro algebras. We consider a general canonical class of near-horizon
geometries in arbitrary dimension D, and show that in any such metric, the
[(D-1)/2] central charges each imply, via the Cardy formula, a microscopic
entropy that agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the associated
extremal black hole. In the remainder of the paper we show for most of the
known rotating black hole solutions of gauged supergravity, and for the
ungauged supergravity solutions with four charges in D=4 and three charges in
D=5, that their extremal near-horizon geometries indeed lie within the
canonical form. This establishes that in all these examples, the microscopic
entropies of the dual CFTs agree with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropies of the

Modelling and performance of Nb SIS mixers in the 1.3 mm and 0.8 mm bands
We describe the modeling and subsequent improvements of SIS waveguide mixers for the 200-270 and 330-370 GHz bands (Blundell, Carter, and Gundlach 1988, Carter et al 1991). These mixers are constructed for use in receivers on IRAM radiotelescopes on Pico Veleta (Spain, Sierra Nevada) and Plateau de Bure (French Alps), and must meet specific requirements. The standard reduced height waveguide structure with suspended stripline is first analyzed and a model is validated through comparison with scale model and working scale measurements. In the first step, the intrinsic limitations of the standard mixer structure are identified, and the parameters are optimized bearing in mind the radioastronomical applications. In the second step, inductive tuning of the junctions is introduced and optimized for minimum noise and maximum bandwidth. In the 1.3 mm band, a DSB receiver temperature of less than 110 K (minimum 80 K) is measured from 180 through 260 GHz. In the 0.8 mm band, a DSB receiver temperature of less than 250 K (minimum 175 K) is obtained between 325 and 355 GHz. All these results are obtained with room-temperature optics and a 4 GHz IF chain having a 500 MHz bandwidth and a noise temperature of 14 K
Late acceleration and crossing in induced gravity
We study the cosmological evolution on a brane with induced gravity within a
bulk with arbitrary matter content. We consider a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker
brane, invariantly characterized by a six-dimensional group of isometries. We
derive the effective Friedmann and Raychaudhuri equations. We show that the
Hubble expansion rate on the brane depends on the covariantly defined
integrated mass in the bulk, which determines the energy density of the
generalized dark radiation. The Friedmann equation has two branches,
distinguished by the two possible values of the parameter \ex=\pm 1. The
branch with \ex=1 is characterized by an effective cosmological constant and
accelerated expansion for low energy densities. Another remarkable feature is
that the contribution from the generalized dark radiation appears with a
negative sign. As a result, the presence of the bulk corresponds to an
effective negative energy density on the brane, without violation of the weak
energy condition. The transition from a period of domination of the matter
energy density by non-relativistic brane matter to domination by the
generalized dark radiation corresponds to a crossing of the phantom divide

Competitive market for multiple firms and economic crisis
The origin of economic crises is a key problem for economics. We present a
model of long-run competitive markets to show that the multiplicity of
behaviors in an economic system, over a long time scale, emerge as statistical
regularities (perfectly competitive markets obey Bose-Einstein statistics and
purely monopolistic-competitive markets obey Boltzmann statistics) and that how
interaction among firms influences the evolutionary of competitive markets. It
has been widely accepted that perfect competition is most efficient. Our study
shows that the perfectly competitive system, as an extreme case of competitive
markets, is most efficient but not stable, and gives rise to economic crises as
society reaches full employment. In the economic crisis revealed by our model,
many firms condense (collapse) into the lowest supply level (zero supply,
namely bankruptcy status), in analogy to Bose-Einstein condensation. This
curious phenomenon arises because perfect competition (homogeneous
competitions) equals symmetric (indistinguishable) investment direction, a fact
abhorred by nature. Therefore, we urge the promotion of monopolistic
competition (heterogeneous competitions) rather than perfect competition. To
provide early warning of economic crises, we introduce a resolving index of
investment, which approaches zero in the run-up to an economic crisis. On the
other hand, our model discloses, as a profound conclusion, that the
technological level for a long-run social or economic system is proportional to
the freedom (disorder) of this system; in other words, technology equals the
entropy of system. As an application of this new concept, we give a possible
answer to the Needham question: "Why was it that despite the immense
achievements of traditional China it had been in Europe and not in China that
the scientific and industrial revolutions occurred?"Comment: 17 pages; 3 figure
Reusable Agena study. Volume 2: Technical
The application of the existing Agena vehicle as a reusable upper stage for the space shuttle is discussed. The primary objective of the study is to define those changes to the Agena required for it to function in the reusable mode in the 100 percent capture of the NASA-DOD mission model. This 100 percent capture is achieved without use of kick motors or stages by simply increasing the Agena propellant load by using optional strap-on-tanks. The required shuttle support equipment, launch and flight operations techniques, development program, and cost package are also defined
Ipilimumab and Bevacizumab in Glioblastoma
The median survival in glioblastoma is just over a year, with no standard second-line therapy. Ipilimumab is an immune checkpoint inhibitor that activates the anti-tumour immune response by cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 blockade. There is significant evidence supporting its role in the treatment of malignant melanoma, including in patients with brain metastases. The addition of the anti-angiogenesis agent, bevacizumab, seems to offer additional benefit and limit the immune-related side-effects of ipilimumab in melanoma. To date there have been no clinical trials investigating this combination in glioblastoma. In this single practice case series, 20 patients with glioblastoma were consented for and treated with ipilimumab and bevacizumab in combination. Safety, tolerability and the response to treatment were reviewed for all patients. Three patients were treated after palliative first-line radiotherapy, one patient after first-line chemoradiation and 16 patients were treated with recurrent disease. Sixty-five per cent of patients completed four cycles of 3 weekly ipilimumab therapy, administered with 2 weekly bevacizumab. Radiographic responses for patients with recurrent disease were evaluated by Response Assessment in Neuro-oncology (RANO) criteria; 31% of patients showed a partial response, 31% had stable disease and 38% had disease progression. The treatment combination was well tolerated, with treatment terminated before completion due to adverse events in two patients. Autoimmune toxicity was manageable with systemic corticosteroid therapy. Ipilimumab and bevacizumab in combination show promising activity with a predictable and manageable toxicity profile, warranting further clinical studies
