    Math anxiety, intrusive thoughts and performance: Exploring the relationship between mathematics anxiety and performance: The role of intrusive thoughts

    The current study examined the relationship between math anxiety and arithmetic performance by focusing on intrusive thoughts experienced during problem solving. Participants (N = 122) performed two-digit addition problems on a verification task. Math anxiety significantly predicted response time and error rate. Further, the extent to which intrusive thoughts impeded calculation mediated the relationship between math anxiety and per cent of errors on problems involving a carry operation. Moreover, results indicated that participants experienced a range of intrusive thoughts and these were related to significantly higher levels of math anxiety. The findings lend support to a deficient inhibition account of the math anxiety-to-performance relationship and highlight the importance of considering intrusive thoughts in future work

    Bogomol'nyi Limit For Magnetic Vortices In Rotating Superconductor

    This work is the sequel of a previous investigation of stationary and cylindrically symmetric vortex configurations for simple models representing an incompressible non-relativistic superconductor in a rigidly rotating background. In the present paper, we carry out our analysis with a generalized Ginzburg-Landau description of the superconductor, which provides a prescription for the radial profile of the normal density within the vortex. Within this framework, it is shown that the Bogomol'nyi limit condition marking the boundary between type I and type II behavior is unaffected by the rotation of the background.Comment: 7 pages, uses RevTeX, submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Speaking Assignment Options: Enhancing Student Involvement in the Learning Process

    This article reports on the use of speaking assignment options implemented at Texas Tech University. Students in the public speaking classes were given the option of delivering a manuscript speech or a reasoned response. The rationale for the assignment options is that students will be more motivated to perform an assignment that they have a choice in and seen more personal benefit in. The paper will address each assignment, how the speaking assignment options were implemented and some results from a survey administered to the students who completed the speaking assignment options exercise

    Limnological, Ichthyological, and Parasitological Investigations on Arkansas Reservoris in Relation to Water Quality

    Lake Fort Smith, a 525 acre (212 ha) reservoir, was impounded in 1936 as a water supply for the city of Fort Smith. The reservoir is located on Clear Creek (Frog Bayou), a tributary of the Arkansas River, in the Boston Mountains 28 miles (45 km) northeast of the city of Fort Smith in Crawford County, Arkansas. A map and morphometric characteristics of Lake Fort Smith are given in Fig. 1 and Table I (Hoffman, 1951; Nelson, 1952). In 1956 Lake Shepherd Springs, a 750 acre (304 ha) impoundment, was created one mile upstream of Lake Fort Smith (Rorie, 1961). Both lakes have a shale substrate and are subject to periods of high turbidity. The 2 two lakes have a water shed of 65 square mile area (168 km ) of mountainous oak-hickory forest. Lake Shepherd Springs has not acted as a settling basin for sediments; thus, the upper portion of Lake Fort Smith has numerous shallow areas with a mud bottom supporting various submergent and emergent aquatic plants. The lower portion of the lake has a rocky, shale substrate with only limited emergent vegetation

    TAK1 Is Required for Dermal Wound Healing and Homeostasis

    Dermal connective tissue is a supportive structure required for skin’s barrier function; dysregulated dermal homeostasis results in chronic wounds and fibrotic diseases. The multifunctional cytokine transforming growth factor (TGF) β promotes connective tissue deposition, repair, and fibrosis. TGF-β acts through well-defined canonical pathways; however, the non-canonical pathways through which TGF-β selectively promotes connective tissue deposition are unclear. In dermal fibroblasts, we show that inhibition of the non-canonical TGF-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) selectively reduced the ability of TGF-β to induce expression of a cohort of wound healing genes, such as collagens, CCN2, TGF-β1, and IL-6. Fibroblast-specific TAK1-knockout mice showed impaired cutaneous tissue repair and decreased collagen deposition, α-smooth muscle actin and CCN2 expression, proliferating cell nuclear antigen staining, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase and p38, but not Smad3, phosphorylation. TAK1-deficient fibroblasts showed reduced cell proliferation, migration, cell attachment/spreading, and contraction of a floating collagen gel matrix. TAK1-deficient mice also showed progressively reduced skin thickness and collagen deposition. Thus, TAK1 is essential for connective tissue deposition in the dermis
