    Dermatological high-dose-rate brachytherapy for the treatment of basal and squamous cell carcinoma

    Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are among the most common cancers in humans. Various therapies are currently being used to treat these tumours including surgery, topical treatments and radiotherapy. We describe a new treatment for BCC and SCC. This consists of superficial radiotherapy, using synthetic resin containing a radioactive beta-emitting isotope. The resin is applied to the lesion to perform a selective beta-irradiation brachytherapy treatment

    Spectrophotometric properties of dwarf planet Ceres from the VIR spectrometer on board the Dawn mission

    We study the spectrophotometric properties of dwarf planet Ceres in the VIS-IR spectral range by means of hyper-spectral images acquired by the VIR imaging spectrometer on board the NASA Dawn mission. Disk-resolved observations with a phase angle within the 7<α<1327^{\circ}<\alpha<132^{\circ} interval were used to characterize Ceres' phase curve in the 0.465-4.05 μ\mum spectral range. Hapke's model was applied to perform the photometric correction of the dataset, allowing us to produce albedo and color maps of the surface. The VV-band magnitude phase function of Ceres was fitted with both the classical linear model and H-G formalism. The single-scattering albedo and the asymmetry parameter at 0.55μ\mum are w=0.14±0.02w=0.14\pm0.02 and ξ=0.11±0.08\xi=-0.11\pm0.08, respectively (two-lobe Henyey-Greenstein phase function); the modeled geometric albedo is 0.094±0.0070.094\pm0.007; the roughness parameter is θˉ=29±6\bar{\theta}=29^{\circ}\pm6^{\circ}. Albedo maps indicate small variability on a global scale with an average reflectance of 0.034±0.0030.034 \pm 0.003. Isolated areas such as the Occator bright spots, Haulani, and Oxo show an albedo much higher than average. We measure a significant spectral phase reddening, and the average spectral slope of Ceres' surface after photometric correction is 1.1%kA˚11.1\%k\AA^{-1} and 0.85%kA˚10.85\%k\AA^{-1} at VIS and IR wavelengths, respectively. Broadband color indices are VR=0.38±0.01V-R=0.38\pm0.01 and RI=0.33±0.02R-I=0.33\pm0.02. H-G modeling of the VV-band magnitude phase curve for α<30\alpha<30^{\circ} gives H=3.14±0.04H=3.14\pm0.04 and G=0.10±0.04G=0.10\pm0.04, while the classical linear model provides V(1,1,0)=3.48±0.03V(1,1,0^{\circ})=3.48\pm0.03 and β=0.036±0.002\beta=0.036\pm0.002. The comparison with spectrophotometric properties of other minor bodies indicates that Ceres has a less back-scattering phase function and a slightly higher albedo than comets and C-type objects.     Griscelli syndrome type 2: long-term follow-up after unrelated donor bone marrow transplantation

    Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by silvery hair ('partial albinism'). Three forms exist; GS type 2 (GS2), the most common one, is characterized by severe primary immunodeficiency with acute episodes of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) which may be fatal in the absence of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. A 5-year-old boy with HLH was referred to us because of silvery-gray hair present since birth. Abnormal pigment clumps were observed in the medulla of hair shafts on light microscopy. Electron microscopy of a skin biopsy revealed melanosomes in melanocytes, but not in keratinocytes. Leukocytes were devoid of intracytoplasmic granules on blood smear. Neurological signs were absent. Genotyping revealed a homozygous haplotype for polymorphic markers linked to the RAB27A locus, but no RAB27A mutation. A diagnosis of GS2 was established. The patient received bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from an unrelated donor, and after 72 months he did not show relapse of HLH. The long, uneventful follow-up supports the use of BMT from an unrelated donor if transplantation from a relative is not possible

    Evaluation of the impact of heat-wave on distribution system resilience

    This paper addresses the impact of heat waves on a real urban distribution system. A data-driven methodology is proposed to simulate the portion of faults that can be associated to normal conditions (and hence to reliability) and the portion correlated to the heat wave occurrence. Based on real data collected in the years 2012-2017, the fault rates associated to reliability and resilience have been calculated and then used to feed a Monte Carlo simulation aiming to manage the uncertainty in the fault occurrence. Finally, based on the Italian legislation, the avoided costs deriving by the substitution of the faulted portion of the system have been calculated. The results show the different nature of reliability and resilience in terms of empirical cumulative curve, suggesting the necessity of using a stochastic-based methodology within regulatory frameworks, especially in case of output-based regulation

    BonFIRE: A multi-cloud test facility for internet of services experimentation

    BonFIRE offers a Future Internet, multi-site, cloud testbed, targeted at the Internet of Services community, that supports large scale testing of applications, services and systems over multiple, geographically distributed, heterogeneous cloud testbeds. The aim of BonFIRE is to provide an infrastructure that gives experimenters the ability to control and monitor the execution of their experiments to a degree that is not found in traditional cloud facilities. The BonFIRE architecture has been designed to support key functionalities such as: resource management; monitoring of virtual and physical infrastructure metrics; elasticity; single document experiment descriptions; and scheduling. As for January 2012 BonFIRE release 2 is operational, supporting seven pilot experiments. Future releases will enhance the offering, including the interconnecting with networking facilities to provide access to routers, switches and bandwidth-on-demand systems. BonFIRE will be open for general use late 2012

    Two-dimensional TiOx nanostructures on Au(111): a Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy investigation

    We investigated the growth of titanium oxide two-dimensional (2D) nanostructures on Au(111), produced by Ti evaporation and post-deposition oxidation. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements characterized the morphological, structural and electronic properties of the observed structures. Five distinct TiOx phases were identified: the honeycomb and pinwheel phases appear as monolayer films wetting the gold surface, while nanocrystallites of the triangular, row and needle phases grow mainly over the honeycomb or pinwheel layers. Density Functional Theory (DFT) investigation of the honeycomb structure supports a (2 x 2) structural model based on a Ti-O bilayer having Ti2O3 stoichiometry. The pinwheel phase was observed to evolve, for increasing coverage, from single triangular crystallites to a well-ordered film forming a (4*sqrt(7) x 4*sqrt(7))R19.1° superstructure, which can be interpreted within a moire-like model. Structural characteristics of the other three phases were disclosed from the analysis of high-resolution STM measurements. STS measurements revealed a partial metallization of honeycomb and pinwheel and a semiconducting character of row and triangular phases

    Search for carbonaceous chondrites evidence on Vesta through the detection of carbonates

    NASA’s Dawn mission was launched in September 2007 and orbited asteroids Vesta (2011 2012) and Ceres (2015–2018). Vesta shows surface dark units that have been suggested to be linked to exogenous materials and are therefore useful to understand the initial stages of the Solar System. This work takes advantage of the newly calibrated data of the VIR spectrometer, which are characterized by a better signal to noise (S/N) ratio, giving us the opportunity to search for spectral features that were never seen before due to noise. Considering that hydroxyl has been shown to be present in every dark unit on Vesta and also in carbonaceous chondrites, the goals of this work are the search for and characterization of carbonates that are present in carbonaceous chondrites, i.e., the supposed darkening agents of Vesta. The estimate of the abundances of carbonates is fundamental to identify which carbonaceous chondrite fell on Vesta; this can be crucial for the definition of an evolutionary history of Vesta and the Solar System. The study of a possible feature at 3.9 μm related to the presence of carbonates was analyzed and found to be noise-induced. Although spectral features related to carbonates were not observed, the 3.4 μm absorption band was analyzed anyway in order to fix an upper limit to the abundance of carbonates in carbonaceous chondrites on Vesta. This value is consistent with petrochemical analyses, i.e., no more than 0.2% of carbonates in carbonaceous chondrites

    Lichen planus and Hepatitis C: a case-control study

    BACKGROUND: The association of lichen planus with hepatitis C (HCV) has been widely reported in the literature. However, there are wide geographical variations in the reported prevalence of HCV infection in patients with lichen planus. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of hepatitis C in Iranian patients with lichen planus at Razi hospital, Tehran. METHODS: During the years 1997 and 1998, 146 cases of lichen planus, 78 (53.1%) women and 69 (46.9%) men were diagnosed. They were diagnosed on the basis of the usual clinical features and, if necessary, typical histological findings. The patients were screened for the presence of anti-HCV antibodies by third generation ELISA and liver function tests. We used the results from screening of blood donors for anti HCV (carried out by Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization) for comparison as the control group. RESULTS: Anti-HCV antibodies were detected in seven cases (4.8%). This was significantly higher than that of the blood donors' antibodies (p < 0.001). The odds ratio was 50.37(21.45–112.24). A statistically significant association was demonstrated between erosive lichen planus and HCV infection. Liver function tests were not significantly different between HCV infected and non-infected patients. CONCLUSION: HCV apears to have an etiologic role for lichen planus in Iranian patients. On the other hand, liver function tests are not good screening means for HCV infection
