    Bringing the Embedded Systems Industry Towards Open Source: the SHARE project experience

    International audienceOpen source software adoption in the embedded systems domain is gaining growing interest within the european industrial and academic communities due to the significant benefits it brings in terms of flexibility and cost reduction.Nonetheless, scepticism about open source as a viable option to support critical business functions still holds, since its decentralized and distributed development model makes quality evaluation and assessment hard to achieve. This paper reports the SHARE project experience, aimed at facilitating and promoting the use of open source software in the embedded systems industry. Performed activities, proposed methodology and achieved results are presented, along with lessons learned to exploit for enabling further initiatives in the next future

    Perception of the role of food and dietary modifications in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: Impact on lifestyle

    Background: Diet has a relevant role in triggering symptoms in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from the patients’ perspective, but there is gap the between patients’ and doctors’ perceptions. Few studies have addressed this topic. The aim of this study was to evaluate food habits and nutrition knowledge in a homogeneous cohort of patients with IBD from southern Italy. Methods: 167 consecutive patients with IBD were recruited. The survey was based on the administration of a semi-structured questionnaire assessing demographics, disease features, dietary behavior, and food intolerance. Results: The majority of patients did not consider food a cause of their disease. However more than 80% changed their diet after the diagnosis and most report an improvement in symptoms. Spiced and seasoned foods, dairy products, vegetables, and fruit were often avoided. A dairy-free diet was adopted by 33.7%. Food choices were based on self-experience and not on medical counselling. Dietary modifications deeply impact on lifestyle. Conclusions: Most of the patients with IBD set diet and lifestyle on self-experience and give up many foods. This has an impact on psychosocial functioning and can lead to nutritional deficiencies. High quality studies are warranted to assess evidence-based dietary strategies and develop patient-targeted dietary recommendations

    Identifying Priority and “Bright-Spot” Counties for Diabetes Preventive Care in Appalachia: An Exploratory Analysis

    Introduction: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) prevalence and mortality in Appalachian counties is substantially higher when compared to non-Appalachian counties, although there is significant variation within Appalachia. Purpose: The objectives of this research were to identify low-performing (priority) and high-performing (bright spot) counties with respect to improving T2DM preventive care. Methods: Using data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, and the Appalachia Regional Commission, conditional maps were created using county-level estimates for T2DM prevalence, mortality, and annual hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) testing rates. Priority counties were identified using the following criteria: top 33rd percentile for T2DM mortality; top 33rd percentile for T2DM prevalence; bottom 50th percentile for A1c testing rates. Bright spot counties were identified as counties in the bottom 33rd percentile for T2DM mortality, the top 33rd percentile for T2DM prevalence; and the top 50th percentile for HbA1c testing rates. Results: Forty-one priority counties were identified (those with high T2DM mortality, high T2DM prevalence, and low HbA1c testing rates), which were located primarily in Central and North Central Appalachia; and 17 bright spot counties were identified (high T2DM prevalence, low T2DM mortality, and high HbA1c testing rates), which were scattered throughout Appalachia. Eight of the 17 bright spot counties were adjacent to priority counties. Implications: By employing conditional mapping to T2DM, multiple variables can be summarized into a single, easily interpretable map. This could be valuable for T2DM-prevention programs seeking to prioritize diagnostic and intervention resources for the management of T2DM in Appalachia

    Bubbles and jackets: new scaling bounds in topological group field theories

    We use a reformulation of topological group field theories in 3 and 4 dimensions in terms of variables associated to vertices, in 3d, and edges, in 4d, to obtain new scaling bounds for their Feynman amplitudes. In both 3 and 4 dimensions, we obtain a bubble bound proving the suppression of singular topologies with respect to the first terms in the perturbative expansion (in the cut-off). We also prove a new, stronger jacket bound than the one currently available in the literature. We expect these results to be relevant for other tensorial field theories of this type, as well as for group field theory models for 4d quantum gravity.Comment: v2: Minor modifications to match published versio

    Assessing Mn as an antioxidant agent in bioactive glasses by quantification of catalase and superoxide dismutase enzymatic mimetic activities

    The antioxidant activity of Mn as additive in a 45S5 type glass system with and without P2O5 was studied by mimicking the activity of catalase (CMA) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzymes. Glasses were melted either under oxidizing or reducing atmosphere (N2/H2) to compare the processing influence on the Mn oxidation state. Thermal (DTA) and optical (UV–Vis) characterizations of the glass powders were carried out to obtain further insight into the structural role of Mn. A correlation of in vitro apatite formation between Tris buffer solution and Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) was performed to optimise Mn substitution, where a decrease in apatite formation was observed by increasing Mn content. Despite this, glasses with up to 1.0 mol% MnO did not show any delay in apatite formation and maintained their CMA and SOD activity. The antioxidant effect of Mn can be attributed to the interconversion Mn2+ ↔ Mn3+ occurring on the glass surface through a heterogeneous catalysis. P2O5 plays an important role in the antioxidant effect of the glass, possibly by charge balancing Mn ions and forming more stable units compared to those formed with Ca and Na. The amount of Mn2+ is predominant in the glass network with respect to Mn3+ in all synthetized glasses. Moreover, glass melting in a reducing atmosphere further avoided Mn oxidation

    Improving Access to Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder in High-Need Areas: The Role of HRSA Health Centers

    Introduction: Despite the opioid epidemic adversely affecting areas across the U.S. for more than two decades and increasing evidence that medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is effective for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), access to treatment is still limited. The limited access to treatment holds true in the Appalachia region despite being disproportionately affected by the crisis, particularly in rural, central Appalachia. Purpose: This research identifies opportunities for health centers located in high-need areas based on drug poisoning mortality to better meet MAT care gaps. We also provide an in-depth look at health center MAT capacity relative to need in the Appalachia region. Methods: The analysis included county-level drug poisoning mortality data (2013–2015) from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)and Health Center Program Awardee and Look-Alike data (2017) on the number of providers with a DATA waiver to provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and the number of patients receiving MAT for the U.S. Several geospatial methods were used including an Empirical Bayes approach to estimate drug poisoning mortality, excess risk maps to identify outliers, and the Local Moran’s I tool to identify clusters of high drug poisoning mortality counties. Results: High-need counties were disproportionately located in the Appalachia region. More than 6 in 10 health centers in high-need counties have the potential to expand MAT delivery to patients. Implications: The results indicate an opportunity to increase health center capacity for providing treatment for opioid use disorder in high-need areas, particularly in central and northern Appalachia

    Determining Protein Complex Connectivity Using a Probabilistic Deletion Network Derived from Quantitative Proteomics

    Protein complexes are key molecular machines executing a variety of essential cellular processes. Despite the availability of genome-wide protein-protein interaction studies, determining the connectivity between proteins within a complex remains a major challenge. Here we demonstrate a method that is able to predict the relationship of proteins within a stable protein complex. We employed a combination of computational approaches and a systematic collection of quantitative proteomics data from wild-type and deletion strain purifications to build a quantitative deletion-interaction network map and subsequently convert the resulting data into an interdependency-interaction model of a complex. We applied this approach to a data set generated from components of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Rpd3 histone deacetylase complexes, which consists of two distinct small and large complexes that are held together by a module consisting of Rpd3, Sin3 and Ume1. The resulting representation reveals new protein-protein interactions and new submodule relationships, providing novel information for mapping the functional organization of a complex

    Endoscopic Tactile Capsule for Non-Polypoid Colorectal Tumour Detection

    An endoscopic tactile robotic capsule, embedding miniaturized MEMS force sensors, is presented. The capsule is conceived to provide automatic palpation of non-polypoid colorectal tumours during colonoscopy, since it is characterized by high degree of dysplasia, higher invasiveness and lower detection rates with respect to polyps. A first test was performed employing a silicone phantom that embedded inclusions with variable hardness and curvature. A hardness-based classification was implemented, demonstrating detection robustness to curvature variation. By comparing a set of supervised classification algorithms, a weighted 3-nearest neighbor classifier was selected. A bias force normalization model was introduced in order to make different acquisition sets consistent. Parameters of this model were chosen through a particle swarm optimization method. Additionally, an ex-vivo test was performed to assess the capsule detection performance when magnetically-driven along a colonic tissue. Lumps were identified as voltage peaks with a prominence depending on the total magnetic force applied to the capsule. Accuracy of 94 % in hardness classification was achieved, while a 100 % accuracy is obtained for the lump detection within a tolerance of 5 mm from the central path described by the capsule. In real application scenario, we foresee our device aiding physicians to detect tumorous tissues
