Bose-enhanced chemistry: Amplification of selectivity in the dissociation of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates
We study the photodissociation chemistry of a quantum degenerate gas of
bosonic triatomic molecules, assuming two open rearrangement channels
( or ). The equations of motion are equivalent to those of a
parametric multimode laser, resulting in an exponential buildup of macroscopic
mode populations. By exponentially amplifying a small differential in the
single-particle rate-coefficients, Bose stimulation leads to a nearly complete
selectivity of the collective -body process, indicating a novel type of
ultra-selective quantum degenerate chemistry.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
The repeatability of the abbreviated (4-h) Oral Fat Tolerance Test and influence of prior acute aerobic exercise
© 2016 The Author(s) Purpose: The Oral Fat Tolerance Test (OFTT) is regarded as a repeatable measure used to assess postprandial triglyceride (TAG) levels, with higher levels observed in cardio-metabolic disorders. Acute aerobic exercise intervention before OFTT reduces the TAG response, but the repeatability of this effect is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the repeatability of the abbreviated 4-h OFTT with and without immediate prior aerobic exercise. Methods: On four separate days, healthy adult male participants underwent two 4-h OFTT (n = 10) and another two 4-h OFTT with 1-h of standardised moderate intensity aerobic exercise performed immediately before meal ingestion (n = 11). The OFTT meal composition included 75.4 g total fat, 21.7 g carbohydrate and 13.7 g protein. Venous blood was sampled at baseline and hourly up to 4 h after the OFTT meal ingestion, and TAG area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. Results: Nonparametric Bland–Altman analysis of 4-h TAG AUC revealed that 9 of 10 repeat measurements fell within ±15 % of the median TAG AUC for the OFTT. By contrast, two of 11 repeat measurements fell within ±15 % of the median TAG AUC for the OFTT undertaken with 1-h prior aerobic exercise. Conclusions: The 4-h OFTT is a repeatable test of postprandial TAG responses in healthy men. However, aerobic exercise performed immediately before OFTT considerably increases the variability of TAG AUC. These findings have implications for interpretation of research studies investigating exercise intervention performed immediately before OFTT. Future studies should also investigate the repeatability of exercise performed 8–24 h before OFTT
The Effect of Longitudinal Moment of Inertia upon Dynamic Stability
Free flight tests were carried out to show whether the longitudinal oscillations of a standard S.E.5A airplane are noticeably affected if its longitudinal moment of inertia is increased. These oscillations were taken by means of a self-recording instrument, the airplane having first its ordinary moment of inertia and then one increased by 14 percent. The period of oscillation was slightly longer after the increase of the moment of inertia, but the damping was not affected. Presented here are test results from an investigation to determine the relative performance of a single-cylinder, high-speed, compression-ignition engine when using fuel injection valve nozzles with different numbers, sizes, and directions of round orifices. A spring loaded, automatic injection valve was used. It was centrally located at the top of a vertical disk-type combustion chamber formed between horizontally opposed inlet and exhaust valves of a 5-inch by 7-inch engine. A series of fuel injection valve nozzles with different arrangements of round orifices were tested, starting with orifices so small that impingement on the combustion chamber walls was impossible and increasing beyond the start of impingement. a :A table and curves are presented showing the performance of the engine with different nozzles. The test results are discussed, and some probable reasons given for the variation in performance with different nozzles on the basis of spray distribution
The Vertical, Longitudinal, and Lateral Accelerations Experienced by an S. E. 5a Airplane While Maneuvering
This investigation was carried out by the Langley Field Laboratory of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics for the purpose of measuring the accelerations along the three principal axes of an airplane while it was maneuvering. The airplane selected for this purpose was the fairly maneuverable SE-5A and the instruments used were the NACA three component accelerometer and the NACA recording airspeed meter. The results showed that the normal accelerations did not exceed 4.000 G. While the lateral and longitudinal accelerations did not exceed 0.60 G
Abundance analysis, spectral variability, and search for the presence of a magnetic field in the typical PGa star HD19400
The aim of this study is to carry out an abundance determination, to search
for spectral variability and for the presence of a weak magnetic field in the
typical PGa star HD19400. High-resolution, high signal-to-noise HARPS
spectropolarimetric observations of HD19400 were obtained at three different
epochs in 2011 and 2013. For the first time, we present abundances of various
elements determined using an ATLAS12 model, including the abundances of a
number of elements not analysed by previous studies, such as Ne I, Ga II, and
Xe II. Several lines of As II are also present in the spectra of HD19400. To
study the variability, we compared the behaviour of the line profiles of
various elements. We report on the first detection of anomalous shapes of line
profiles belonging to Mn and Hg, and the variability of the line profiles
belonging to the elements Hg, P, Mn, Fe, and Ga. We suggest that the
variability of the line profiles of these elements is caused by their
non-uniform surface distribution, similar to the presence of chemical spots
detected in HgMn stars. The search for the presence of a magnetic field was
carried out using the moment technique and the SVD method. Our measurements of
the magnetic field with the moment technique using 22 Mn II lines indicate the
potential existence of a weak variable longitudinal magnetic field on the first
epoch. The SVD method applied to the Mn II lines indicates =-76+-25G on
the first epoch, and at the same epoch the SVD analysis of the observations
using the Fe II lines shows =-91+-35G. The calculated false alarm
probability values, 0.008 and 0.003, respectively, are above the value 10^{-3},

Chaotic Free-Space Laser Communication over Turbulent Channel
The dynamics of errors caused by atmospheric turbulence in a
self-synchronizing chaos based communication system that stably transmits
information over a 5 km free-space laser link is studied experimentally.
Binary information is transmitted using a chaotic sequence of short-term pulses
as carrier. The information signal slightly shifts the chaotic time position of
each pulse depending on the information bit. We report the results of an
experimental analysis of the atmospheric turbulence in the channel and the
impact of turbulence on the Bit-Error-Rate (BER) performance of this chaos

Cryptococcus gattii: An Emerging Cause of Fungal Disease in North America
During the latter half of the twentieth century, fungal pathogens such as
Cryptococcus neoformans were increasingly recognized as a significant threat to the
health of immune compromised populations throughout the world. Until recently, the closely related
species C. gattii was considered to be a low-level endemic pathogen that was confined to
tropical regions such as Australia. Since 1999, C. gattii has emerged in the Pacific Northwest
region of North America and has been responsible for a large disease epidemic among generally
healthy individuals. The changing epidemiology of C. gattii infection is likely to be a consequence of alterations in fungal ecology and biology and illustrates its potential to cause serious human disease.
This review summarizes selected biological and clinical aspects of C. gattii that are
particularly relevant to the recent North American outbreak and compares these to the Australian and South
American experience
Trusty URIs: Verifiable, Immutable, and Permanent Digital Artifacts for Linked Data
To make digital resources on the web verifiable, immutable, and permanent, we
propose a technique to include cryptographic hash values in URIs. We call them
trusty URIs and we show how they can be used for approaches like
nanopublications to make not only specific resources but their entire reference
trees verifiable. Digital artifacts can be identified not only on the byte
level but on more abstract levels such as RDF graphs, which means that
resources keep their hash values even when presented in a different format. Our
approach sticks to the core principles of the web, namely openness and
decentralized architecture, is fully compatible with existing standards and
protocols, and can therefore be used right away. Evaluation of our reference
implementations shows that these desired properties are indeed accomplished by
our approach, and that it remains practical even for very large files.Comment: Small error corrected in the text (table data was correct) on page

Boundary fields and renormalization group flow in the two-matrix model
We analyze the Ising model on a random surface with a boundary magnetic field
using matrix model techniques. We are able to exactly calculate the disk
amplitude, boundary magnetization and bulk magnetization in the presence of a
boundary field. The results of these calculations can be interpreted in terms
of renormalization group flow induced by the boundary operator. In the
continuum limit this RG flow corresponds to the flow from non-conformal to
conformal boundary conditions which has recently been studied in flat space
