Fairness in overloaded parallel queues

Maximizing throughput for heterogeneous parallel server queues has received quite a bit of attention from the research community and the stability region for such systems is well understood. However, many real-world systems have periods where they are temporarily overloaded. Under such scenarios, the unstable queues often starve limited resources. This work examines what happens during periods of temporary overload. Specifically, we look at how to fairly distribute stress. We explore the dynamics of the queue workloads under the MaxWeight scheduling policy during long periods of stress and discuss how to tune this policy in order to achieve a target fairness ratio across these workloads

A new species and new records of Aphodius Illiger (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Aphodiinae) from mammal burrows in Nebraska

Direct sampling of rodent burrows in Nebraska resulted in the collection of 16 species of Aphodius Illiger previously unknown from the state, including specimens of four undescribed species. One of these species is described here as new: Aphodius viceversus new species recorded from Nebraska and Kansas. Other Aphodius species recorded from Nebraska for the first time include A. acuminatus Cartwright, A. anomaliceps Brown, A. carri Brown, A. criddlei Brown, A. kirni Cartwright, A. kiowensis Gordon and Salsbury, A. magnificens Robinson, A. neodistinctus Brown, A. peculiosus Schmidt, A. punctissimus Brown, A. thomomysi Brown, and A. leptotarsis Brown. Collecting information is summarized for each species

Apparati effimeri e arti decorative: carri di trionfo in corallo

L’articolo illustra le profonde connessioni tra gli apparati effimeri con carri trionfali realizzati in occasione dei Festini di Santa Rosalia tra la fine del XVII e l’inizio del XVIII secolo a Palermo, disegnati dai famosi Architetti del Senato Paolo e Giacomo Amato, e la parallela produzione di superbi carri di trionfo in corallo. Vengono analizzate opere custodite non soltanto in musei e in collezioni private siciliane, ma anche nel resto d’Italia e all’estero, tutte opere di maestranze trapanesi. Viene inoltre segnalato e studiato un inedito trionfo di corallo di collezione privata di Palermo, raffigurante, sopra l’usuale carro, l’incontro tra la Madonna e Gesù Risorto

La película Cuatreros de la directora argentina Albertina Carri, es un ensayo documental que parte de la historia de Isidro Velázquez, un bandolero social chaqueño, sobre el que su padre Roberto Carri escribió un libro, Formas prerrevolucionarias de la violencia, al que cita en numerosas ocasiones. Pero el término de ensayo documental se queda corto. Hay en la historia del bandolero una historia (política) de la memoria colectiva de los últimos cincuenta años de Argentina, y al mismo tiempo es una ramificación de Los rubios (2003), ahora más centrada en el pensamiento ideológico de su padre y en el suyo.Universidad de Málaga. Coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) of Three-toed Box Turtles, Terrapene carolina triunguis (Reptilia: Testudines), from Arkansas and Oklahoma

We collected 50 three-toed box turtles (Terrapene carolina triunguis) from 9 counties of Arkansas and 4 counties of Oklahoma, and examined their feces for coccidial parasites. Nine of 24 (38%) turtles from Arkansas and 8 of 26 (31%) from Oklahoma were found to be passing oocysts of Eimeria ornata. This represents two new geographic distributional records for this coccidian. Measurements of individual isolates of E. ornate as well as morphological characteristics are provided with comparison to its original description and to another Terrapene coccidian, Eimeria carri. In addition, we noted an adelid pseudoparasite being passed by a single T. c. triunguis from Oklahoma that likely represents a parasite of arthropods

Liberación Nacional y Tercer Mundo: la óptica de Roberto Carri en Antropología 3er. Mundo (1968-1973)

El objetivo del trabajo es realizar un análisis de algunos aspectos en los que se ve reflejada la cuestión de la liberación nacional de los países del Tercer Mundo en los escritos que el sociólogo argentino Roberto Carri publicó en la revista Antropología 3er. Mundo editada entre 1968 y 1973. Las variables a partir de las cuales se problematiza este asunto son dos temáticas fundamentales para Carri: la contraposición entre conocimiento formal y conocimiento popular, y el debate entre una estrategia emancipadora basada en el nacionalismo de masas y otra sustentada en un partido clasista obrero.The aim of this article is to analyze some aspects in which the question of national liberation of Third World countries is reflected in the works that the Argentine sociologist Roberto Carri published in the journal Antropología 3er. Mundo, edited from 1968 to 1973.
