This research examines the relation between depressive syrnptomatology and cognitive distortions, on the basis of a range of variables. The sample comprised 1,288 young people (683 males and 605 females aged between 12 and 17. The results revealed a solid positive relation between depressive symptomatology and cognitive biases, with lower self-esteemand somatic syrnptoms. The depressive symptomatology rises gradually with age, as do cognitive biases, which are particularly significant at age thirteen. The increase in the cognitive capacities of the young is related to the appearance of cognitive distortions. The cognitive biases predicted depression syrnptomatology. The most, frequent cognitive biases are emotional reasoning, absolutism and catastrophizing. At the beginning of adolescence, absolutism and maximization are prominent, whereas in later years two types of inferences and ernotional reasoning appear. Womenshow more depressive syrnptomatology and cognitive biases, and tend to be more ernotional and to dramatize; however, men are characterized by the presence of ccmustu. Finally, all kinds of distortion characterize the subjects with significant scores in depressions and those considered at the risk of mood disorder.
Purpose: The present study tries to analyse the maltreatment effects and the expected relation, according to the reviewed literature, with behaviour problems in a sample of children in residential care in a protection centre in Seville county (Spain).
Method: The sample was conformed by a group of maltreated subjects in a protection setting (n = 30) and two groups of equivalent comparison (n = 30 and n = 30). The first group was conformed by subjects living in a marginal area of Sevilla, similar to the origin setting of the study group, and the second group comes from a wealthy area of this city. The behaviour problems index CBC of Achenbach 1978; Achenbach 1979 ; Achenbach and Edelbrock 1983) was used.
Results: No significant differences between groups in the CBC total score was found. However, significant differences were found in the extemalising dimension and in the delinquency, somatic anxiety, somatic problems, and social withdrawal dimensions. Victims of corruption presented higher scores on the CBC total score, extemalising dimension, and delinquency.
Conclusions: Young people, victims of child maltreatment and living in an institution, showed problems of withdrawal.
On a utilisé l’index CBC Achenbach 1978; Achenbach 1979 ; Achenbach and Edelbrock 1983).
Personality and contextual variables in teacher burnout
Although several papers have shown the importance of personality structure in the disposition to burnout,
its role remains controversial, especially in relation to contextual variables of an organizational and
environmental type. In this sense, we have first considered describing and then predicting the burnout levels
of 99 teachers in the province of Seville (Spain). In addition to a structured, self-applied interview, we have
used the Spanish adaptation of the reduced version of NEO-PI-R (NEO-FFI) (Costa and McCrae, 1999)
and the Spanish teachers version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) (Ferrando and Pe´rez, 1996). We
have used Homogeneity Analysis and Multiple Linear Regression (SPSS 11). The results allow us to appreciate
the important role of personality structure in combination with some of the selected contextual variables,
both in the description and prediction of teacher burnout. Most results confirm what has been
achieved in similar research, and they especially emphasize the role of agreeableness as a protective factor
(high scores) and, at the same time, as a vulnerability factor (low scores). These results are discussed from
the perspective of interaction between disposition and contextual variables
The aims of this investigation have been the study of the presence of depressive symptomatology
and their relationship with cognitive distortions in adolescent scholars. Children's
Depression Inventory (CDI, Kovacs, 1992), Peer Nomination Inventory of Depression
(PNID, Lefkowitz y Tesiny, 1981) and Children's Cognitive Distortions Questionnaire
(CDCN-1, Bas, 1987) have been administered on a representative sample of 908 Sevillian
adolescents (aged 12 to 16). The results revealed an 11'78% of depressive symptomatology
with an upward lineal tendency regarding the age and with superior scores in the case of
women. The number of cognitive distortions has been related positively with the presence
of this symptomatology. This point shows to be one of the main predictors of the punctuations
in CDI. The depressive symptomatology keeps relation to the most important
moments in the youth's cognitive development. An increase of cognitive distortions has
been appreciated on aged 13. Later on, this one stays constant. CDCN-1 is considered as
an appropriate complement of CDI, on the contrary that PNID, probably for the process of
intemalization of depressive manifestations. You cannot grant a causal role on depression
to the cognitive biases. It is suggested that the coincidence between CDI and CDCN-1 about
raised scores is a sign of a high risk (vulnerability) to develop a first depressive episode
The application of a multi-component programme on a set of disruptive behaviours in a case of mental retardation
This paper analyses the application of a multi-modal treatment to a complex set of disruptive behaviours in a case of mental
retardation. The patient was a twenty-four-year-old woman, with a moderate level of deficiency and a long history of
institutionalisation. The multi-modal treatment combined extinction with instructions, response cost, differential reinforcement
of other behaviours and overcorrection, all of which were applied by trained co-therapists from the contexts in which
the behaviour problems first appeared (residence and occupational workshop). Findings show the treatment to be effective
in both contexts. The discussion refers to the implications of the results, the importance of each technique and the need for
a prolonged follow-up in this type of intervention.
This study analyses the relationship between interparental rearing inconsistency and the presence of aggressive and depressive behaviour in a sample of 1159 subjects (45,3% male) between 8 and 17 years of age. The results show that subjects from families with rearing inconsistency in control, hostility and communication showed significantly more aggressive and depressive behaviours than subjects from families with interparental consistency. Parents´ control inconsistency was the best predictor of the alterations studied. Although no specific pattern of inconsistency associated with child aggression or depressive symptoms was found, interparental inconsistence appeared especially associated with them.

The aim of this study is the analysis of different descriptors and reactions related to the experience of fatigue.
Two groups were compared: a clinical sample (n = 92, 31 males, mean age = 38.87) and a non-clinical (n = 225, 135 males,
mean age = 32.45) sample. The total sample was composed of 317 participants (52% males), ranging in age from 18 to
76 years. Findings show the experience of fatigue was mainly related to somatic terms (76% of the total sample). Specific
results were found only for the clinical group: (a) significant relationships between fatigue and anxiety, χ2(1) = 34.71,
p < .01; tension, χ2(1) = 16.80, p < .01; and sadness, χ2(1) = 24.59, p < .01; (b) higher intensity of fatigue (F = 84.15, p = .001),
and predominance of the cognitive components of fatigue. Results showed that fatigue in subjects with a clinical disorder
(versus those without) was associated both, to negative emotional states, and to a higher intensity of fatigue, especially
in its cognitive elements. Important clinical implications for its assessment and intervention are discussed
The two fold aim of this study was first, to analyze the effects of
anticipatory fatigue, emotional symptomatology and belonging to a clinical
group on the physical and cognitive perception of fatigue, and second, to
explore the potential moderating effect of anticipatory fatigue on the relationship
between symptomatology or clinical condition and perceived fatigue.
The conditional and partial effects of independent variables were
analyzed by hierarchical regression in an ex-post-facto correlational design.
The sample was composed of 317 participants (29% from a clinical population).
Anticipatory fatigue (by an ad hoc scale), and perception of fatigue (by
the Chalder Fatigue Scale) were measured. Emotional symptoms were assessed
by Goldberg’s GHQ-28 questionnaire. Anticipatory fatigue and
emotional symptoms (mainly depressive) had significant effects on cognitive
and physical fatigue. Belonging to the clinical group significantly and
exclusively predicted cognitive fatigue. Furthermore, anticipatory fatigue
moderated between-group effects (clinical versus general) and cognitive fatigue.
In brief, emotional symptoms (mainly depressive) and anticipatory
fatigue significantly predicted perceived cognitive and physical fatigue. Anticipation
of fatigue moderated the effect of clinical group on cognitive fatigue
after controlling for depressive symptomatolog
Background: Clinical research stresses the importance of cognitive
variables for predisposition, onset, and especially, perpetuation of perceived
fatigue. The aim was to analyze the mediating effects of emotional
symptomatology (somatic, depressive and anxiety) between anticipatory
fatigue and perception of physical and cognitive fatigue. Methods: The
sample was composed of 317 participants (29% from a clinical population)
aged 18 to 76. Anticipatory fatigue and perception of fatigue were measured
by fatigue scales. Emotional symptoms were assessed by the General
Health Questionnaire, GHQ-28. Results: Depressive symptomatology
mediated the relationship between anticipatory fatigue and cognitive
fatigue in both groups, and also somatic symptoms/somatization in
patients. The indirect effect of physical fatigue was observed only in
the clinical group, with depressive symptoms partially mediating the
anticipatory fatigue and cognitive fatigue relationship. Conclusions:
Anticipatory fatigue has a partial indirect effect on total physical fatigue,
and full indirect effect on cognitive fatigue, mediated by depressive and
somatic symptoms. Anticipatory fatigue is a relevant cognitive factor in
the design of psychological intervention for improvement of cognitive and
physical fatigue.
