    ARTMAP-DS: Pattern Discrimination by Discounting Similarities

    ARTMAP-DS extends fuzzy ARTMAP to discriminate between similar inputs by discounting similarities. When two or more candidate category representations are activated by a given input, features that the candidate representations have in common are ignored prior to determining the winning category.     The relationship between patient-provider communication and quality of life for children with asthma and their caregivers

    Objective: This study examined whether patient-provider communication is associated with asthma-related quality of life (QOL) and asthma outcomes among children with asthma and their caregivers. Methods: Children ages 8-16 years with asthma and their caregivers (n=296) were recruited at five pediatric practices in North Carolina. Children and caregivers reported demographic and clinical characteristics immediately after an audio-taped medical visit with their health care provider. During a home visit that took place 1 month after the medical visit, children and caregivers reported asthma-related QOL, and caregivers reported child asthma outcomes, including asthma symptom days and missed school days. Generalized estimating equations were used to determine whether patient-provider communication during the medical visit was associated with child and caregiver QOL and child asthma outcomes 1 month later. Results: On average, providers asked caregivers 4.5 questions and asked children 3 questions per visit, whereas caregivers and children asked less than 1 question per visit. Providers asked children more asthma-related questions, caregivers reported better QOL and fewer asthma symptom days 1 month later. Children and caregivers with higher asthma-management self-efficacy at the office visit reported better QOL 1 month later. Conclusions: Mirroring national guideline recommendations, our results suggest that providers should ask children about their asthma during medical visits. Future longitudinal studies should conduct mediation analyses to determine whether asking children asthma-related questions during medical visits increases children's asthma management self-efficacy and ultimately improve outcomes, such as QOL, health care utilization, symptom days and missed school days

    An adaptive array excitation scheme for the unidirectional enhancement of guided waves

    Control over the direction of wave propagation allows an engineer to spatially locate defects. When imaging with longitudinal waves, time delays can be applied to each element of a phased array transducer to steer a beam. Because of the highly dispersive nature of guided waves (GWs), this beamsteering approach is suboptimal. More appropriate time delays can be chosen to direct a GW if the dispersion relation of the material is known. Existing techniques, however, need a priori knowledge of material thickness and acoustic velocity, which change as a function of temperature and strain. The scheme presented here does not require prior knowledge of the dispersion relation or properties of the specimen to direct a GW. Initially, a GW is generated using a single element of an array transducer. The acquired waveforms from the remaining elements are then processed and retransmitted, constructively interfering with the wave as it travels across the spatial influence of the transducer. The scheme intrinsically compensates for the dispersion of the waves, and thus can adapt to changes in material thickness and acoustic velocity. The proposed technique is demonstrated in simulation and experimentally. Dispersion curves from either side of the array are acquired to demonstrate the scheme's ability to direct a GW in an aluminum plate. The results show that unidirectional enhancement is possible without a priori knowledge of the specimen using an arbitrary pitch array transducer.     Microscopic Structure of High-Spin Vibrational Excitations in Superdeformed 190,192,194Hg

    Microscopic RPA calculations based on the cranked shell model are performed to investigate the quadrupole and octupole correlations for excited superdeformed bands in 190Hg, 192Hg, and 194Hg. The K=2 octupole vibrations are predicted to be the lowest excitation modes at zero rotational frequency. At finite frequency, however, the interplay between rotation and vibrations produces different effects depending on neutron number: The lowest octupole phonon is rotationally aligned in 190Hg, is crossed by the aligned two-quasiparticle bands in 192Hg, and retains the K=2 octupole vibrational character up to the highest frequency in 194Hg. The gamma vibrations are predicted to be higher in energy and less collective than the octupole vibrations. From a comparison with the experimental dynamic moments of inertia, a new interpretation of the observed excited bands invoking the K=2 octupole vibrations is proposed, which suggests those octupole vibrations may be prevalent in SD Hg nuclei.Comment: 22 pages, REVTeX, 12 postscript figures are available on reques

    Thermodynamics of pyrope-majorite, Mg3Al2Si3O12-Mg4Si4O12, solid solution from atomistic model calculations

    Static lattice energy calculations, based on empirical pair potentials have been performed for a large set of different structures with compositions between pyrope and majorite, and with different states of order of octahedral cations. The energies have been cluster expanded using pair and quaternary terms. The derived ordering constants have been used to constrain Monte Carlo simulations of temperature-dependent properties in the ranges of 1073 3673K and 0 20 GPa. The free energies of mixing have been calculated using the method of thermodynamic integration. At zero pressure the cubic/tetragonal transition is predicted for pure majorite at 3300 K. The transition temperature decreases with the increase of the pyrope mole fraction. A miscibility gap associated with the transition starts to develop at about 2000K and xmaj 0.8, and widens with the decrease in temperature and the increase in pressure. Activity composition relations in the range of 0 20 GPa and 1073 2673K are described with the help of a high-order Redlich Kister polynomial

The conventional methods often produce agglomerated structures exhibiting lower strength and ductility. To overcome the cohesive force of the agglomerates, a melt conditioned high-pressure die casting (MC-HPDC) process innovatively adapts the well-established, high-shear dispersive mixing action of a twin screw mechanism. The distribution of particles and properties of composites are quantitatively evaluated. The adopted rheo process significantly improved the distribution of the reinforcement in the matrix with a strong interfacial bond between the two. A good combination of improved ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and tensile elongation (e) is obtained compared with composites produced by conventional processes.EPSR

    Anthropogenic Space Weather

    Anthropogenic effects on the space environment started in the late 19th century and reached their peak in the 1960s when high-altitude nuclear explosions were carried out by the USA and the Soviet Union. These explosions created artificial radiation belts near Earth that resulted in major damages to several satellites. Another, unexpected impact of the high-altitude nuclear tests was the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) that can have devastating effects over a large geographic area (as large as the continental United States). Other anthropogenic impacts on the space environment include chemical release ex- periments, high-frequency wave heating of the ionosphere and the interaction of VLF waves with the radiation belts. This paper reviews the fundamental physical process behind these phenomena and discusses the observations of their impacts.Comment: 71 pages, 35 figure

    Competition between Exceptionally Long-Range Alkyl Sidechain Ordering and Backbone Ordering in Semiconducting Polymers and Its Impact on Electronic and Optoelectronic Properties

    Intra‐ and intermolecular ordering greatly impacts the electronic and optoelectronic properties of semiconducting polymers. The interrelationship between ordering of alkyl sidechains and conjugated backbones has yet to be fully detailed, despite much prior effort. Here, the discovery of a highly ordered alkyl sidechain phase in six representative semiconducting polymers, determined from distinct spectroscopic and diffraction signatures, is reported. The sidechain ordering exhibits unusually large coherence lengths (≄70 nm), induces torsional/twisting backbone disorder, and results in a vertically multilayered nanostructure with ordered sidechain layers alternating with disordered backbone layers. Calorimetry and in situ variable temperature scattering measurements in a model system poly{4‐(5‐(4,8‐bis(3‐butylnonyl)‐6‐methylbenzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐bâ€Č]dithiophen‐2‐yl)thiophen‐2‐yl)‐2‐(2‐butyloctyl)‐5,6‐difluoro‐7‐(5‐methylthiophen‐2‐yl)‐2H‐benzo[d][1,2,3]triazole} (PBnDT‐FTAZ) clearly delineate this competition of ordering that prevents simultaneous long‐range order of both moieties. The long‐range sidechain ordering can be exploited as a transient state to fabricate PBnDT‐FTAZ films with an atypical edge‐on texture and 2.5× improved field‐effect transistor mobility. The observed influence of ordering between the moieties implies that improved molecular design can produce synergistic rather than destructive ordering effects. Given the large sidechain coherence lengths observed, such synergistic ordering should greatly improve the coherence length of backbone ordering and thereby improve electronic and optoelectronic properties such as charge transport and exciton diffusion lengths

    Motivators of online vulnerability: the impact of social network site use and FOMO

    Continued and frequent use of social network sites (SNS) has been linked to a fear of missing out (FOMO) and online self-promotion in the form of friending and information disclosure. The present paper reports findings from 506 UK based Facebook users (53% male) who responded to an extensive online survey about their SNS behaviours and online vulnerability. Structural equation modelling (SEM) suggests that FOMO mediates the relationship between increased SNS use and decreased self-esteem. Self-promoting SNS behaviours provide more complex mediated associations. Longitudinal support (N = 175) is provided for the notion that decreased self-esteem might motivate a potentially detrimental cycle of FOMO-inspired online SNS use.
