Density Matrix Renormalization Group Applied to the Ground State of the XY-Spin-Peierls System
We use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) to map out the ground
state of a XY-spin chain coupled to dispersionless phonons of frequency . We confirm the existence of a critical spin-phonon coupling for the onset of the spin gap bearing the signature of
a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We also observe a classical-quantum crossover
when the spin-Peierls gap is of order . In the classical
regime, , the mean-field parameters are strongly renormalized
by non-adiabatic corrections. This is the first application of the DMRG to

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Holstein model of spinless fermions
The one-dimensional Holstein model of spinless fermions interacting with
dispersionless phonons is studied using a new variant of the density matrix
renormalisation group. By examining various low-energy excitations of finite
chains, the metal-insulator phase boundary is determined precisely and agrees
with the predictions of strong coupling theory in the anti-adiabatic regime and
is consistent with renormalisation group arguments in the adiabatic regime. The
Luttinger liquid parameters, determined by finite-size scaling, are consistent

Two-Sided Derivatives for Regular Expressions and for Hairpin Expressions
The aim of this paper is to design the polynomial construction of a finite
recognizer for hairpin completions of regular languages. This is achieved by
considering completions as new expression operators and by applying derivation
techniques to the associated extended expressions called hairpin expressions.
More precisely, we extend partial derivation of regular expressions to
two-sided partial derivation of hairpin expressions and we show how to deduce a
recognizer for a hairpin expression from its two-sided derived term automaton,
providing an alternative proof of the fact that hairpin completions of regular
languages are linear context-free.Comment: 28 page
Genetic heterogeneity of hepatitis E virus in Darfur, Sudan, and neighboring Chad.
The within-outbreak diversity of hepatitis E virus (HEV) was studied during the outbreak of hepatitis E that occurred in Sudan in 2004. Specimens were collected from internally displaced persons living in a Sudanese refugee camp and two camps implanted in Chad. A comparison of the sequences in the ORF2 region of 23 Sudanese isolates and five HEV samples from the two Chadian camps displayed a high similarity (>99.7%) to strains belonging to Genotype 1. But four isolates collected in one of the Chadian camps were close to Genotype 2. Circulation of divergent strains argues for possible multiple sources of infection
Utilisation d'une souche indigène de Trichoderma harzianum contre cinq agents pathogènes chez le concombre et la tomate de serre au Québec
Le potentiel antagoniste du biofongicide à base de Trichoderma harzianum MAUL-20, isolé au Québec, a été testé contre cinq agents telluriques phytopathogènes(Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL), Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum et Verticillium dahliae) du concombre et de la tomate de serre. Le biofongicide a démontré une efficacité contre P. ultimum et R. solani chez le concombre et la tomate et contre FORL chez la tomate. De plus, T. harzianum MAUL-20 a eu un effet stimulant sur le développement des plants de concombre lorsque cultivés, sans agents pathogènes, dans un substrat organique alimenté du biofongicide. L'efficacité de T. harzianum MAUL-20 a été comparée à celle du biofongicide américain Rootshield™ (Trichoderma harzianum KRL-AG2) et le premier a démontré une activité antagoniste égale ou supérieure à celle de Rootshield™.Trichoderma harzianum MAUL-20, a strain isolated from a soil in the province of Québec, was evaluated for its antagonistic potential against five plant pathogens (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. radicis-lycopersici (FORL), Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and Verticillium dahliae) on greenhouse cucumber and tomato. It reduced disease incidence significantly against P. ultimum and R. solani on both cucumber and tomato and against FORL on tomato. In addition, T. harzianum MAUL-20 stimulated plant growth of cucumber plants when amended to a substrate without plant pathogens. Its efficacy was compared to that of Rootshield™, a biofungicide based on Trichoderma harzianum KRL-AG2 registered in the USA. Its biocontrol potential was equivalent or superior to Rootshield™
New Representations of the Perturbative S-Matrix
We propose a new framework to represent the perturbative S-matrix which is
well-defined for all quantum field theories of massless particles, constructed
from tree-level amplitudes and integrable term-by-term. This representation is
derived from the Feynman expansion through a series of partial fraction
identities, discarding terms that vanish upon integration. Loop integrands are
expressed in terms of "Q-cuts" that involve both off-shell and on-shell
loop-momenta, defined with a precise contour prescription that can be evaluated
by ordinary methods. This framework implies recent results found in the
scattering equation formalism at one-loop, and it has a natural extension to
all orders---even non-planar theories without well-defined forward limits or
