    The role of auxiliary states in state discrimination with linear optical evices

    The role of auxiliary photons in the problem of identifying a state secretly chosen from a given set of L-photon states is analyzed.     Old and young bulges in late-type disk galaxies

    ABRIDGED: We use HSTACS and NICMOS imaging to study the structure and colors of a sample of nine late-type spirals. We find: (1) A correlation between bulge and disks scale-lengths, and a correlation between the colors of the bulges and those of the inner disks. Our data show a trend for bulges to be more metal-enriched than their surrounding disks, but otherwise no simple age-metallicity connection between these systems; (2) A large range in bulge stellar population properties, and, in particular, in stellar ages. Specifically, in about a half of the late-type bulges in our sample the bulk of the stellar mass was produced recently. Thus, in a substantial fraction of the z=0 disk-dominated bulged galaxies, bulge formation occurs after the formation/accretion of the disk; (3) In about a half of the late-type bulges in our sample, however, the bulk of the stellar mass was produced at early epochs; (4) Even these "old" late-type bulges host a significant fraction of stellar mass in a young(er) c component; (5) A correlation for bulges between stellar age and stellar mass, in the sense that more massive late-type bulges are older than less massive late-type bulges. Since the overall galaxy luminosity (mass) also correlates with the bulge luminosity (mass), it appears that the galaxy mass regulates not only what fraction of itself ends up in the bulge component, but also "when" bulge formation takes place. We show that dynamical friction of massive clumps in gas-rich disks is a plausible disk-driven mode for the formation of "old" late-type bulges.     Geometric phase induced by a cyclically evolving squeezed vacuum reservoir

    We propose a new way to generate an observable geometric phase by means of a completely incoherent phenomenon. We show how to imprint a geometric phase to a system by "adiabatically" manipulating the environment with which it interacts. As a specific scheme we analyse a multilevel atom interacting with a broad-band squeezed vacuum bosonic bath. As the squeezing parameters are smoothly changed in time along a closed loop, the ground state of the system acquires a geometric phase. We propose also a scheme to measure such geometric phase by means of a suitable polarization detection.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Model atmosphere analysis of the extreme DQ white dwarf GSC2U J131147.2+292348

    A new model atmosphere analysis for the peculiar DQ white dwarf discovered by Carollo et al. (2002) is presented. The effective temperature and carbon abundance have been estimated by fitting both the photometric data (UBJ,VRF,IN,JHK) and a low resolution spectrum (3500<lambda<7500 A) with a new model grid for helium-rich white dwarfs with traces of carbon (DQ stars). We estimate Teff ~ 5120 +/- 200 K and log[C/He] ~ -5.8 +/- 0.5, which make GSC2U J131147.2+292348 the coolest DQ star ever observed. This result indicates that the hypothetical transition from C2 to C2H molecules around Teff = 6000 K, which was inferred to explain the absence of DQ stars at lower temperatures, needs to be reconsidered.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letter

    Biomechanics parameters in teenage cyclist – SUV accident and comparison with the pedestrian

    The study of the injury caused by the vehicle-teenage cyclist crash is presented in this paper. The vehicle is a SUV, with high frontal part, in order to compare the results with those obtained previously in the sedan- teenage cyclist crash and begin a study of the influence of the frontal shape of the vehicle. No variation is executed on the model of the teenage cyclist and the bike. Three different positions are analyzed: front, rear and lateral position. The injury on the cyclist head is examined by HIC criterion, in the way indicated in the rules. Correlation HIC – AIS is used to calculate the lethality of the injuries. The principal conclusion is done that the injury of the head is more dangerous for the SUV impact than the sedan, but only at the maximum speed (50 km/h). The injury to the chest is analyzed by 3 ms criterion; the injury is greater for the SUV impact than the sedan, but the entity is strongly dependent on the cyclist position. A comparison is executed with both the teenage and adult pedestrian concluding that the pedestrian is subjected to greater injury, because the bike absorbs a part of the energy in the front and side crash. The more dangerous injury is the telescoping. A further comparison show that the shape of the bonnet and the height of the frontal part have to be studied in an accurate way to reduce the injury to pedestrians and cyclists

    Valutazione delle lesioni nell\u2019impatto ciclista adolescente -veicolo con simulazione multibody

    Le situazioni di impatto e la dinamica di ciclista e pedone sono le informazioni fondamentali per lo sviluppo di soluzioni efficaci per migliorare la protezione del pedone e del ciclista in caso di urto con autovetture. La casistica degli incidenti a Palermo, negli ultimi anni, avvenuti su strade urbane (84%) che coinvolgono adolescenti (6,4%), mostra che i ciclisti hanno in genere una posizione di impatto superiore rispetto al pedone, con una quota maggiore di lesioni per urti nella zona del parabrezza. In questo lavoro \ue8 eseguita la simulazione dinamica per lo studio delle lesioni alla testa e al torace dell\u2019adolescente, tra una bicicletta generica e un modello di auto che presenta caratteristiche vantaggiose per la sicurezza del pedone o del ciclista. Il software SimWise (Visual Nastran) \ue8 stato usato per la simulazione multibody dell\u2019impatto; il modello antropomorfo, l'auto e le biciclette sono quelli utilizzati in lavori precedenti. L'attenzione \ue8 su un ciclista adolescente, perch\ue9 i relativi dati di lesione si trovano in letteratura con difficolt\ue0. I dodici test d\u2019impatto completo (auto contro ciclista) hanno come parametri principali: velocit\ue0 del veicolo (20, 30, 40 e 50 km/h), con tre diverse posizioni del ciclista rispetto al veicolo: frontale, laterale e posteriore. La posizione di impatto della testa (sopra il cofano, nel parabrezza), determinato dalla prova di crash, mostra che la protezione del ciclista dovrebbe essere migliorata nella zona pi\uf9 alta del parabrezza, rispetto a quelle pedonali. La ferita alla testa viene analizzata utilizzando il parametro HIC e la ferita al torace \ue8 analizzata secondo il criterio dei 3 ms; viene calcolata la probabilit\ue0 AIS 4 +, concludendo che la lesione alla testa \ue8 pi\uf9 pericolosa in caso di pedone adolescente, mentre la ferita della cassa toracica \ue8 pi\uf9 pericolosa nel caso di ciclista adolescente. Inoltre il ciclista adolescente ha una maggiore possibilit\ue0 di sopravvivenza rispetto al ciclista adulto.     The evolution of a two level system with a slowly varying Hamiltonian, modeled as s spin 1/2 in a slowly varying magnetic field, and interacting with a quantum environment, modeled as a bath of harmonic oscillators is analyzed using a quantum Langevin approach.     Rainwater harvesting for home-garden irrigation: a case study in Italy

    In residential buildings, drinking water is often used for tasks that do not necessarily require high quality water, such as home-garden irrigation. Our research focuses on the idea of harvesting rainwater to promote sustainable management of low-quality water resources on a building scale for irrigation purposes. The effectiveness of a collection system depends on the weather conditions, which determine also the water need of the plants, on the size of the cultivated area and on the collection surfaces. In this research, a rainwater harvesting system (RWH) for the irrigation of home-gardens in the city of Celano (L'Aquila - Italy) has been analysed. The obtained results show that to maximize water savings a great investment is necessary, i.e. not refundable in a reasonable period due to the low cost of drinking water. On the contrary, to maximize the economic return, it is required a smaller and cheaper tank, but the maximum water savings efficiency decrease to about 60%. In the latter case the RWH system can be cheaper than an irrigation plant supplied by the aqueduct. In the work graphs are provided for practical design use for realizing a RWH system in areas with meteorological conditions similar to those of the survey area, according both the highest water savings efficiency or the highest economic return
