    Childhood IQ and marriage by mid-life: the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 and the Midspan Studies

    The study examined the influence of IQ at age 11 years on marital status by mid-adulthood. The combined databases of the Scottish Mental Survey 1932 and the Midspan studies provided data from 883 subjects. With regard to IQ at age 11, there was an interaction between sex and marital status by mid-adulthood (p = 0.0001). Women who had ever-married achieved mean lower childhood IQ scores than women who had never-married (p < 0.001). Conversely, there was a trend for men who had ever-married to achieve higher childhood IQ scores than men who had never-married (p = 0.07). In men, the odds ratio of ever marrying was 1.35 (95% CI 0.98–1.86&#59; p = 0.07) for each standard deviation increase in childhood IQ. Among women, the odds ratio of ever marrying by mid-life was 0.42 (95% CI 0.27–0.64; p = 0.0001) for each standard deviation increase in childhood IQ. Mid-life social class had a similar association with marriage, with women in more professional jobs and men in more manual jobs being less likely to have ever-married by mid-life. Adjustment for the effects of mid-life social class and height on the association between childhood IQ and later marriage, and vice versa, attenuated the effects somewhat, but suggested that IQ, height and social class acted partly independently

    Field evaluation of six Gros Michel banana accessions (Musa spp., AAA group) for agronomic performance, resistance to Fusarium wilt race 1 and yellow Sigatoka

    Three Gros Michel mutants (‘IBP 5-B’, ‘IBP 5–61’ and ‘IBP 12’) from the Cuban Instituto de Biotecnología de las Plantas, two semi-dwarf Gros Michel varieties (‘Highgate’ and ‘Cocos’) and a Thai accession (‘Hom Thong Mokho’) were evaluated in Australia over a five year period. They were screened for their resistance to Fusarium wilt Race 1 (FocR1) caused by the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense, as well as resistance to yellow Sigatoka (Pseudocercospora musae Zimm [teleomorph Mycosphaerella musicola Leach]). They were also grown for a plant and ratoon crop in the tropics (17°S) and a plant crop in the subtropics (28°S) with no disease pressure to record their agronomic characteristics. They were compared with Australian industry standards, ‘Williams’ (AAA, Cavendish subgroup) and ‘Lady Finger’ (AAB, Pome subgroup). In the subtropics the Gros Michel mutants and semi-dwarf accessions were sensitive to cold and very susceptible to FocR1 and yellow Sigatoka while their agronomic performance in the tropics was good, with ‘Highgate’ having the best bunch weight on a shorter, more manageable plant. Of the six accessions evaluated, ‘Hom Thong Mokho’ showed the highest level of resistance to FocR1 although it had poor cold tolerance, as did the other Gros Michel selections, and consequently had low productivity compared to ‘Williams’ and even ‘Lady Finger’. However in the warmer, more humid tropics ‘Hom Thong Mokho's performance was much better and it was less susceptible to yellow Sigatoka than the other Gros Michel selections. Subsequent genetic analysis by Christelová et al. (2011) has revealed that although ‘Hom Thong Mokho’ is marketed as a Gros Michel variety in Asia, it is closer to the Rio subgroup (AAA) of dessert bananas

    Intergenerational social mobility and mid-life status attainment: influences of childhood intelligence, childhood social factors, and education

    We examined the influences of childhood social background, childhood cognitive ability, and education on intergenerational social mobility and social status attainment at midlife. The subjects were men born in 1921 and who participated in the Scottish Mental Survey of 1932 and thereafter in the Midspan Collaborative study in Scotland between 1970 and 1973. In logistic regression analyses, childhood cognitive ability and height were associated with upward and downward change from father's social class to participant's social class at mid-life. Education significantly influenced upward social mobility. Number of siblings had no significant effect on social mobility. These effects were also examined after adjusting for the other variables. In structural equation modelling analyses, father's social class and childhood cognitive ability influenced social status attainment at midlife, with education and occupational status in young adulthood as partially mediating factors. It was noteworthy that childhood cognitive ability related more strongly to occupation in midlife than to first occupation. These data add to the relatively few studies that track the process of status attainment in adulthood, they provide information from a new geographical setting, and they contain information from a greater proportion of the lifecourse than do most existing studies

    Analysis of Hendra Virus Fusion Protein N-Terminal Transmembrane Residues

    Hendra virus (HeV) is a zoonotic enveloped member of the family Paramyoxviridae. To successfully infect a host cell, HeV utilizes two surface glycoproteins: the attachment (G) protein to bind, and the trimeric fusion (F) protein to merge the viral envelope with the membrane of the host cell. The transmembrane (TM) region of HeV F has been shown to have roles in F protein stability and the overall trimeric association of F. Previously, alanine scanning mutagenesis has been performed on the C-terminal end of the protein, revealing the importance of β-branched residues in this region. Additionally, residues S490 and Y498 have been demonstrated to be important for F protein endocytosis, needed for the proteolytic processing of F required for fusion. To complete the analysis of the HeV F TM, we performed alanine scanning mutagenesis to explore the residues in the N-terminus of this region (residues 487–506). In addition to confirming the critical roles for S490 and Y498, we demonstrate that mutations at residues M491 and L492 alter F protein function, suggesting a role for these residues in the fusion process
