    Bacterial lipopolysaccharide potentiates type II collagen-induced arthritis in mice

    Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) is an immunologically relevant animal model of human rheumatoid arthritis. Studies comparing the disease incidence in genetically susceptible male and female DBA/1LacJ mice demonstrated that under low density/low stress housing conditions, female mice had earlier onset (day 35) and higher disease incidence (25%) than the male mice (17% at day 49) when immunized with bovine type II collagen. A single subcutaneous or intraperitoneal injection of bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) 17–24 days after collagen immunization greatly potentiated this standard CIA model in a dose related manner. 20–40 ÎŒg of LPS accelerated the onset of disease from day 35 to day 21 and exacerbated the clinical severity score from 0.27 to 2.00 at day 42. A similar administration of 6 ÎŒg of recombinant interleukin-ÎČ produced a comparable potentiated CIA model. The acute phase protein, serum amyloid P (SAP), was elevated in the serum at day 26 to 440 ÎŒg ml−1 for the LPS potentiated CIA mice compared to 65 ÎŒg ml−1 in the non-potentiated immunized CIA mice. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.78) between SAP levels and disease expression in the LPS treated CIA mice. The rapidity and uniformity of disease expression in this LPS potentiated CIA model will allow more and different drugs to be evaluated with a smaller number of animals

    This research paper focuses on student peer interactional relationships in a tertiary level classroom setting in Japan. The research is based on the use of one piece of technology, Microsoft PowerPoint, to illustrate student peer interactional relationships during presentation tasks throughout the 2015 Spring Semester. The application of the particular software used in this research is of little importance, in that any piece of software could be used to investigate student interaction. The important findings of this research indicate that students can be made aware of their self-affirmation through an application of sociolinguistics and an introduction of critical pedagogy that encompasses a significant reduction in the influence of the traditional ‘teacher’ role to the benefit of student empowerment. The role of the student changes from being the passive object to that of a more active Subject role, as that of the ‘teacher,’ or better termed ‘facilitator,’ dispenses their traditional paternalistic, authoritative Subject position, in favor of being one that helps to bring about ‘
an outcome (as learning, productivity, or communication) by providing indirect or unobtrusive assistance, guidance, or supervision,’ on the part of the ‘facilitator,’ as it is defined in the Miriam-Webster dictionary (2015). For students to adopt a more active role requires a change in study habits, which requires more effort. However, this adheres perfectly to the Kyoai College motto; ‘You can develop your ability though it might be hard’ (Kyoai, 2015)

    Excerpt from the Proceedings of the Nineteenth Annual Acquisition Research SymposiumBridge contracts—temporary contract actions that enable continued contractor performance until a replacement contract can be awarded—are not controlled and are suspected to be overused. While facilitating continued mission achievement, bridge contracts reduce competition, result in higher prices paid, and increase transaction costs. Yet, few agencies have a means to identify bridge contracts, meaning the extent of their use is unknown. Thus, most agencies do not identify, analyze, and monitor the risk associated with achieving statutory competition objectives. This research develops a data analytic methodology to identify bridge contracts, which can quantify the magnitude of the problem and serve as a starting point to enact policy to mitigate usage.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited

    Student Misbehaviors, Instructor Responses, And Connected Classroom Climate: Implications for the Basic Course

    The concept of connected classroom climate focuses on student-to-student communication behaviors that are paramount in creating the climate of a class, especially in the basic course. While previous studies have focused on the positive and cooperative behaviors of students and instructors that may contribute to perceptions of classroom connectedness, the role that incivilities may play in detracting from or undermining a connected classroom climate has not been investigated. This study examines perceptions of a connected classroom climate and its relationships to student misbehaviors and instructor responses. A total of 542 university students enrolled in 30 sections of the basic public speaking course completed the Connected Classroom Climate Inventory (CCCI) and scales measuring student misbehaviors and teacher responses to student misbehaviors. Results showed that student perceptions of a connected classroom climate were inversely related to both inconsiderate and harassing student misbehaviors. The results also revealed a possible relationship between classroom connectedness and the manner in which instructors respond to students when they misbehave. These findings suggest that basic course instructors need to consider how to reduce student inconsideration and harassment misbehaviors in their classes, and how to positively respond to these behaviors when they do occur so that classroom connectedness is not diminished

    We show that constraints from perturbative QCD calculations play a role in the nucleon to Delta(1232) electromagnetic transition even at moderate momentum transfer scales. The pQCD constraints, tied to real photoproduction data and unseparated resonance response functions, lead to explicit forms for the helicity amplitudes wherein the E2/M1 ratio remains small at moderately large momentum transfer.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, ReVTe

So we need an axiology according to which the intrinsic value of a possible world is a function of both how well-off and how deserving the people in that world are. But how should these ‘desert-adjusted’ values of possible worlds be calculated? It is easy to come up with some qualitative ideas. But these qualitative ideas leave us with an embarrassment of riches: too many quantitative functions that implement those qualitative ideas.     Most research on the association between classroom climate and student learning has emphasized the instructor’s role in creating a positive learning environment. However, the role students play in fostering a classroom climate that promotes learning has received less attention, particularly in the basic course. This study examined the relationship between perceptions of a connected classroom climate and students’ cognitive and affective learning involving 437 freshman and sophomore university students enrolled in the basic public speaking course. Students completed the Connected Classroom Climate Inventory (CCCI) and scales measuring affective and cognitive learning.     The present invention provides a new process for the preparation of 2S,3S-N-isobutyl-N-(2-hydroxy-3-amino-4phenylbutyl)- p-nitrobenzenesulfonylamide hydrochloride, wherein this compound is prepared directly from the chloromethylalcohol. Importantly, the process of the present invention results in higher yields of 2S,3S-N-isobutyl-N-(2hydroxy -3 -amino -4-phenylbutyl) -pnitrobenzenesulfonylamide hydrochloride without sacrificing its purity. The processes of the present inventin can be used to prepare not only the 2S,3S-derivative, but also the 2R,3S-, 2S,2R- and the 2R,3R-derivatives
