THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE FOCUS ON INNOVATION AND ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY: A STUDY ON BRAZILIAN ELECTRIC POWER DISTRIBUTION COMPANIES

Law 9.991/2000, which provides about investments in research and development (R&D) to the electric sector in Brazil, prioritizes innovations that provide advances to the sector. In the electricity distribution segment, the focus is on improving the overall efficiency of companies. Therefore, this paper aims to verify the correlation between the focus on innovation and relative economic efficiency. The survey was conducted in 2014 covering data from 2010 to 2013 of 20 exclusive electricity distribution companies listed on BM&FBovespa. This research is applied and descriptive, with a quantitative approach. In the data collection, the documentary strategy was used, with a technique of content analysis, collecting data in available documents. From the literature consulted, a scale was proposed to quantify the focus on innovation. To quantify the efficiency scores, Data Envelopment Analysis was used through Frontier Analyst software, based on accounting data. The main results with the scale of innovation indicate low focus on innovation in the companies surveyed. When there is no significant correlation between the innovation scores and the economic efficiency scores, other existing studies point out that, in Brazil, innovation efforts, in addition to being incipient, seek to comply with the relevant legislation rather than the benefits of innovation

Introduction: Metabolic Syndrome is a set of biochemical, physiological, clinical and metabolic factors that start with peripheral insulin resistance and that, when concomitantly present, increase the risk of developing atherosclerosis, cardiovascular events, type 2 diabetes mellitus and mortality from any cause. In children, there is no consensus on diagnostic criteria and treatment, so the importance of their establishment and standardization. Objective: To publish a consensus of the Brazilian Association of Nutrology for the diagnosis and treatment of Metabolic Syndrome in children and adolescents. Methods: Literature review and discussion among authors. Results: For diagnosis, it is recommended to use the following parameters: excess body adiposity, dyslipidemia, alteration of glycemic-insulinemic profile and elevation of blood pressure. Adolescents and children aged seven years or older will be diagnosed with metabolic syndrome if present altered values in at least 3 of the 4 criteria. Lifestyle modifications, improvement in the quantity and quality of food and increased physical activity are used as initial therapy and the use of metformin is indicated for the control of insulin resistance when those strategies will be not sufficient. Liraglutide can be used in people over 12 years of age to promote weight loss and bariatric surgery is reserved for special cases of severe obesity. Conclusion: Early recognition and treatment of Metabolic Syndrome among children and adolescents provide prevention of cardiovascular adverse events and diabetes in patients and improves their quality of life and the present consensus seeks to standardize these conducts

Objective: To publish a consensus on the milky feeding of children aged between 1 and 5 years old, in the face of the nonuniformity of indication and the lack of standardization, in Brazil, on the nomenclature and classification of milky products produced for this stage. Methods: Literature review and members discussion. Results: The review showed the nutrition deficiencies among Brazilian children and the position of different medical societies. Conclusions: Recommendations of milky feeding are proposed for government area, industry and health care professionals

Application of Bio-inspired Metaheuristics in the Data Clustering Problem

Clustering analysis includes a number of different algorithms and methods for grouping objects by their similar characteristics into categories. In recent years, considerable effort has been made to improve such algorithms performance. In this sense, this paper explores three different bio-inspired metaheuristics in the clustering problem: Genetic Algorithms (GAs), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), and Artificial Immune Systems (AIS). This paper proposes some refinements to be applied to these metaheuristics in order to improve their performance in the data clustering problem. The performance of the proposed algorithms is compared on five different numeric UCI databases. The results show that GA, ACO and AIS based algorithms are able to efficiently and automatically forming natural groups from a pre-defined number of clusters
