    Origens da Universidade Brasileira

Higher education was precariously installed in Brazil in colonial times, and during that period it led a difficult life. From the early nineteenth century on several institutions were founded and developed in different parts of the country. Those institutions were kept independent from one another without forming full universities until the beginning of the twentieth century, in a peculiar historical process that sets the country apart in this respect. This article examines this unique development and searches the past for the earliest origins of the nation's present university network

O centenário da Teoria de Bohr

The year 2013 marks the centennial of that wondrous year in which Niels Bohr proposed a novel theory about the constitution of atoms and small molecules after which the way we regard atoms and their behaviour began to be drastically altered. Bohr drew on several sources for his original description of the atoms, most importantly on spectroscopy and Balmer's equation thereof, the new quantum hypothesis advanced a few years earlier by Planck, and the planetary atom proposed by Rutherford. Although Bohr's ideas were to be eventually overtaken by the advent of quantum mechanics, his theory was the basis of a new thinking about atoms and molecules which constitutes an invaluable asset in the development of science ever since

O químico e naturalista luso-brasileiro Alexandre Antonio Vandelli

Alexandre Vandelli was the heir of two illustrious scientific traditions in the Luso-Brazilian world of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, that of his father, the celebrated Italian-Portuguese naturalist and chemist Domingos (Domenico) Vandelli, and that of his father-in-law, that protean figure in several scientific specialties as well as in politics, José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva, who in later life was of paramount importance in the process of Brazilian independence from Portugal. The younger Vandelli followed their footsteps but soon engaged in a multiple career, at first in Portugal and later in Brazil, of which little is known and is here presented for the first time

Um panorama da nanotecnologia no Brasil (e seus macro-desafios)

The objectives of this essay are to describe the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N) in Brazil. The analysis shows that Brazilian research in N&N is considered satisfactory and, although under other denominations, dates from at least 20 years. Innovation is still less satisfactory and there are different points of views on the issue. However, there is already a tendency towards the promotion of innovation in nanotechnology in the country. Scientists and the industrial sector have been showing interest in partnerships and some scientific policies stimulate this articulation between academy and companies

Electrochemical and positron annihilation studies of semicarbazones and thiosemicarbazones derived from ferrocene

A series of six ferrocene derivatives containing a semicarbazone or thiosemicarbazone side chain was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and positron annihilation lifetime measurements. Both the redox and the electron capture processes took place on the Fe atom. Correlations between the two methods were proposed, taking into account the substituents on the side chain of the compounds, their redox potentials and the probabilities of o-positronium (o-Ps).formation.

A hundred years ago, a twenty-eight year old Danish scientist published a series of three papers in which electron motion was quantized. The Bohr atomic model is surely known by every chemistry student. Nevertheless in this same 1913 trilogy, Bohr studied atoms with several electrons as well as molecules. Chemistry students, in general, are not aware of the Bohr molecule. The present paper aims at rescuing this important classical model. A review of the Bohr atomic model for both one and several electrons is discussed, together with a theoretical presentation of the Bohr molecule

The reaction of the ambidentate ligand dibenzylsulfoxide (dbso) with Me2SnCl2 in 1:1 molar ratio leads to the formation of the five-coordinate adduct [Me2SnCl2(dbso)], whereas the same reaction conditions with Ph2SnCl2 provide the six-coordinate adduct trans-[Ph2SnCl2(dbso)2]. On the other hand, the reaction with nBu2SnCl2 forms the dimeric adduct [{nBu2SnCl2(dbso)}2], which probably possesses octahedral tin(IV) nuclei and bridging chlorides. The adducts [MeSnCl3(dbso)2] and [Ph3SnCl(dbso)] were also prepared and included in the study. All complexes were studied by microanalysis and IR, NMR (1H, 13C and 119Sn) and Mössbauer spectroscopies to investigate their structural properties. The six-coordinate species fac-[MeSnCl3(dbso)2] and trans-[Ph2SnCl2(dbso)2] were also studied by single crystal X-ray diffractometry. These compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic, Pbcn, and monoclinic space group P21/c, respectively, as discrete neutral molecules with the tin(IV) atom in a distorted octahedral geometry and the two dbso ligands in cis and trans positions, respectively
