    Strategic Actions in a Platform Context: What Should Facebook Do Next?

    This teaching case highlights the complex and unique strategic issues facing social media platform companies, using Facebook as the primary, motivating example. The case centers on the breach of trust that occurred when Cambridge Analytica acquired user data from 87 million Facebook accounts and then attempted to sway the 2016 U.S. Presidential election. The student is immersed in the context of Cambridge Analytica’s violation of user trust and asked to consider the key strategic issues confronting Facebook executives and the company’s ubiquitous platform. Economic concepts of a technology platform, such as network effects, switching costs, and lock-in, as well as overall platform strategy, are considered. Meanwhile, the technological concepts of designing a social media platform that engenders trust – one that balances the conflict between privacy and personalization – are stressed. An optional exercise on the functionality of application programming interfaces (APIs) is also provided. The target courses for the case include Information Systems Strategy, Digital and Social Media Strategy, and Managing Information Systems, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. While the incidents surrounding Facebook and Cambridge Analytica have become politicized, the teaching case here focuses on the interaction of information systems and business strategy, not directly on the political atmosphere

    A Broadened Approach to Understanding IT Organizational Structure

    With the increasingly influential impact of the information systems/technology (IT) organization on most firms, it is important to understand the implications of alternative structures of the IT organization. With limited exceptions, literature in this area has focused on the locus of decision rights in the IT organization. This research uses broader dimensions found in the general organization structure literature to characterize IT organizational structure. Our analysis suggests that IT organizations aimed at promoting innovation emphasize standardization and flexibility while deemphasizing specialization, IT organizations aimed at integration emphasize standardization, and IT organizations aimed at scalability through sourcing emphasize standardization while deemphasizing specialization. IT managers seeking to match their organization to the values of their firm may utilize the IT organization structure survey instrument exhibited here to do so

    Citric Acid Passivation of Stainless Steel

    Passivation is a process for cleaning and providing corrosion protection for stainless steel. Currently, on Kennedy Space Center (KSC), only parts passivated with nitric acid are acceptable for use. KSC disposes of approximately 125gal of concentrated nitric acid per year, and receives many parts from vendors who must also dispose of used nitric acid. Unfortunately, nitric acid presents health and environmental hazards. As a result, several recent industry studies have examined citric acid as an alternative. Implementing a citric acid-based passivation procedure would improve the health and environmental safety aspects of passivation process. However although there is a lack of published studies that conclusively prove citric acid is a technically sound passivation agent. In 2007, NASA's KSC Materials Advisory Working Group requested the evaluation of citric acid in place of nitric acid for passivation of parts at KSC. United Space Alliance Materials & Processes engineers have developed a three-phase test plan to evaluate citric acid as an alternative to nitric acid on three stainless steels commonly used at KSC: UNS S30400, S41000, and S17400. Phases 1 and 2 will produce an optimized citric acid treatment based on results from atmospheric exposure at NASA's Beach Corrosion Facility. Phase 3 will compare the optimized solution(s) with nitric acid treatments. If the results indicate that citric acid passivates as well or better than nitric acid, NASA intends to approve this method for parts used at the Kennedy Space Center

    Assessing insecticide hazard to bumble bees foraging on flowering weeds in treated lawns

    Maintaining bee-friendly habitats in cities and suburbs can help conserve the vital pollination services of declining bee populations. Despite label precautions not to apply them to blooming plants, neonicotinoids and other residual systemic insecticides may be applied for preventive control of lawn insect pests when spring-flowering weeds are present. Dietary exposure to neonicotinoids adversely affects bees, but the extent of hazard from field usage is controversial. We exposed colonies of the bumble bee Bombus impatiens to turf with blooming white clover that had been treated with clothianidin, a neonicotinoid, or with chlorantraniliprole, the first anthranilic diamide labeled for use on lawns. The sprays were applied at label rate and lightly irrigated. After residues had dried, colonies were confined to forage for six days, and then moved to a non-treated rural site to openly forage and develop. Colonies exposed to clothianidin-treated weedy turf had delayed weight gain and produced no new queens whereas those exposed to chlorantraniliprole-treated plots developed normally compared with controls. Neither bumble bees nor honey bees avoided foraging on treated white clover in open plots. Nectar from clover blooms directly contaminated by spray residues contained 171±44 ppb clothianidin. Notably, neither insecticide adversely impacted bee colonies confined on the treated turf after it had been mown to remove clover blooms present at the time of treatment, and new blooms had formed. Our results validate EPA label precautionary statements not to apply neonicotinoids to blooming nectar-producing plants if bees may visit the treatment area. Whatever systemic hazard through lawn weeds they may pose appears transitory, however, and direct hazard can be mitigated by adhering to label precautions, or if blooms inadvertently are contaminated, by mowing to remove them. Chlorantraniliprole usage on lawns appears non-hazardous to bumble bees

    Universal signal conditioning amplifier

    Engineers at NASA's Kennedy Space Center have designed a signal conditioning amplifier which automatically matches itself to almost any kind of transducer. The product, called Universal Signal Conditioning Amplifier (USCA), uses state-of-the-art technologies to deliver high accuracy measurements. USCA's features which can be either programmable or automated include: voltage, current, or pulsed excitation, unlimited resolution gain, digital filtering and both analog and digital output. USCA will be used at Kennedy Space Center's launch pads for environmental measurements such as vibrations, strains, temperatures and overpressures.
