Dietary aflatoxin exposure and impaired growth in young children from Benin and Togo: cross sectional study
Fetal and early childhood environment, including the
nutritional status of the pregnant mother and the
infant, are considered critical for growth and risk of
disease in later life. Many people in developing counÂ
tries are not only malnourished but also chronically
exposed to high levels of toxic fungal metabolites
(mycotoxins). One family of mycotoxins, the aflatoxins,
are carcinogenic and immunotoxic and cause growth
retardation in animals. Aflatoxins contaminate staple
foods in West Africa, particularly maize and groundÂ
nuts, as a result of hot, humid storage conditions that
promote fungal growth. High exposure to aflatoxins
occurs throughout childhood in the region, suggestÂ
ing that growth and development could be critically

Studies of cracking behavior in melt-processed YBCO bulk superconductors
An important phenomenon in bulk superconductors fabricated by top-seeded-melt growth (TSMG) is the formation of cracks due to the inherent brittleness of the YBa2Cu3O7-δ (Y-123) phase matrix. These form during the fabrication of the superconducting monolith and play an important role in the limitation of current flow. However, cracks may also form during cooling cycles of the sample to liquid nitrogen temperatures. In this investigation, macrocracks along the c-direction, in particular were analyzed microscopically before and after cooling. In addition we attempt to resolve the c-axis macrocrack formation pattern using the magnetoscan technique
Behavior of bulk high-temperature superconductors of finite thickness subjected to crossed magnetic fields
Crossed magnetic field effects on bulk high-temperature superconductors have
been studied both experimentally and numerically. The sample geometry
investigated involves finite-size effects along both (crossed) magnetic field
directions. The experiments were carried out on bulk melt-processed Y-Ba-Cu-O
(YBCO) single domains that had been pre-magnetized with the applied field
parallel to their shortest direction (i.e. the c-axis) and then subjected to
several cycles of the application of a transverse magnetic field parallel to
the sample ab plane. The magnetic properties were measured using orthogonal
pick-up coils, a Hall probe placed against the sample surface and
Magneto-Optical Imaging (MOI). We show that all principal features of the
experimental data can be reproduced qualitatively using a two-dimensional
finite-element numerical model based on an E-J power law and in which the
current density flows perpendicularly to the plane within which the two
components of magnetic field are varied. The results of this study suggest that
the suppression of the magnetic moment under the action of a transverse field
can be predicted successfully by ignoring the existence of flux-free
configurations or flux-cutting effects. These investigations show that the
observed decay in magnetization results from the intricate modification of
current distribution within the sample cross-section. It is also shown that the
model does not predict any saturation of the magnetic induction, even after a
large number (~ 100) of transverse field cycles. These features are shown to be

Exploring Risk Perception of an Emerging Environmental Health Risk: A case study of allergic disease in youth team sport in Ontario, Canada
Asthma is the most common chronic disease among children worldwide, and approximately 3.8 million Canadians are diagnosed. Although the relationship is complex, participation in physical activity is recommended as part of a comprehensive asthma management plan, as it can reduce symptoms and improve wellbeing for those affected. Team sport participation is a common way for children and youth to engage in physical activity. The spaces in which team sport is experienced can present unique challenges for vulnerable children, and evidence suggests that those with asthma may be less physically active than their non-asthmatic peers. While asthmatic youth may experience barriers to sport participation, effective allergic disease management that includes coach consideration of the environmental contexts of sport can help asthmatic athletes maintain long-term engagement in activity.
The research presented in this thesis therefore aims to increase understanding of how children, parents and organized youth team sport coaches in Ontario understand and manage the links between allergic disease, the environment and physical activity. The research focuses on three broad objectives: first, to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of users and providers of child and youth team sport with respect to the links between the environment, allergic disease and physical activity; second, to investigate the impact of a coach education module related to coach attitudes and behaviours regarding the links between the environment, allergic disease and physical activity; and finally, to document the factors shaping the perception of asthma as an emerging environmental health risk in Ontario youth team sport. A mixed-methods case study approach was used in this research.
There is an inherent geographic component to understanding how environmental factors impact allergic disease risk in organized team sport. Understanding how elements of the environment are managed and risk is perceived amongst sport stakeholders is important for effective asthma management. In-depth interviews with coaches (n=18) and athletes with asthma (n=11) suggest that ensuring both the physical (e.g., recognizing potential triggers) and social (e.g., reducing stigmatization) needs of vulnerable athletes are recognized is important to maximize enjoyment and performance, and improve asthma management for those affected. Focus groups with coaches (n=12) indicate that while coaches perceived an education module related to the environment, physical activity and allergic disease as valuable, some content was considered less relevant, and barriers to its implementation (e.g., coach autonomy) were identified. Finally, multivariate analysis of two surveys (coaches, n=94; parents of athletes with allergic disease, n=90) suggests that various factors (e.g., exposure, education, propensity for risk, gender) contribute to how asthma risk is perceived amongst and between sport stakeholders, emphasizing the value of population-specific risk management communication.
This research makes multiple important contributions. Theoretically, a place-based conceptual framework for understanding public experience of risk was applied; this framework informed research design, and recommendations (e.g., consideration of scale) with respect to future application are offered. The use of multiple and mixed methods, and including a potentially vulnerable group in the interviews, allowed for enhanced understanding of the factors that contribute to asthma management in sport. Substantively, this research contributed to the Geographies of Asthma literature, increasing understanding of asthma risk perception outcomes, and the environmental factors (e.g., sociocultural, political) that contribute to how asthma is perceived amongst sport stakeholders in Ontario. Considering the environmental contexts of risk is therefore critical to improve environment and health management in Ontario organized team sport, and reduce the future chronic disease burden associated with physical inactivity in Canada
Single grain (LRE)-Ba-Cu-O superconductors fabricated by top seeded melt growth in air
We have recently reported a practical processing method for the fabrication in air of large, single grain (LRE)-Ba-Cu-O [where LRE Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd] bulk superconductors that exhibit high Tc and high Jc. The process is based initially on the development of a new type of generic seed crystal that can promote effectively the epitaxial nucleation of any (RE)-Ba-Cu-O system and, secondly, by suppressing the formation of (LRE)/Ba solid solution in a controlled manner within large LRE-Ba-Cu-O grains processed in air. In this paper we investigate the degree of homogeneity of large grain Sm-Ba-Cu-O superconductors fabricated by this novel process. The technique offers a significant degree of freedom in terms of processing parameters and reproducibility in the growth of oriented single grains in air and yields bulk samples with significantly improved superconducting and field-trapping properties compared to those processed by conventional top seeded melt growth (TSMG)

Growth rate of YBCO single grains containing Y-2411(M)
Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) single grains have the potential to generate large trapped magnetic fields for a variety of engineering applications, and research on the processing and properties of this material has attracted world-wide interest. In particular, the introduction of flux pinning centres to the large grain microstructure to improve its current density, Jc, and hence trapped field, has been investigated extensively over the past decade. Y 2Ba4CuMOx [Y-2411(M)], where M = Nb, Ta, Mo, W, Ru, Zr, Bi and Ag, has been reported to form particularly effective flux pinning centres in YBCO due primarily to its ability to exist as nano-size inclusions in the superconducting phase matrix. However, the addition of the Y-2411(M) phase to the precursor composition complicates the melt-processing of single grains. We report an investigation of the growth rate of single YBCO grains containing Y-2411(Bi) phase inclusions and Y2O3. The superconducting properties of these large single grains have been measured specifically to investigate the effect of Y2O3 on broadening the growth window of these materials
A systematic review of population based epidemiological studies in Myasthenia Gravis
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The aim was to collate all myasthenia gravis (MG) epidemiological studies including AChR MG and MuSK MG specific studies. To synthesize data on incidence rate (IR), prevalence rate (PR) and mortality rate (MR) of the condition and investigate the influence of environmental and technical factors on any trends or variation observed.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Studies were identified using multiple sources and meta-analysis performed to calculate pooled estimates for IR, PR and MR.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>55 studies performed between 1950 and 2007 were included, representing 1.7 billion population-years. For All MG estimated pooled IR (eIR): 5.3 per million person-years (C.I.:4.4, 6.1), range: 1.7 to 21.3; estimated pooled PR: 77.7 per million persons (C.I.:64.0, 94.3), range 15 to 179; MR range 0.1 to 0.9 per millions person-years. AChR MG eIR: 7.3 (C.I.:5.5, 7.8), range: 4.3 to 18.0; MuSK MG IR range: 0.1 to 0.32. However marked variation persisted between populations studied with similar methodology and in similar areas.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>We report marked variation in observed frequencies of MG. We show evidence of increasing frequency of MG with year of study and improved study quality. This probably reflects improved case ascertainment. But other factors must also influence disease onset resulting in the observed variation in IR across geographically and genetically similar populations.</p
Enhanced self-field critical current density of nano-composite YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) thin films grown by pulsed-laser deposition

Layers are deposited on (001) MgO substrates by laser ablation of YBa2Cu3O7−δ(Y-123) ceramics containing Y2Ba4CuMOx (M-2411, M=Ag, Nb, Ru, Zr) nano-particles. The Jc of films depends on the secondary-phase content of the ceramic targets, which was varied between 0 and 15 mol%. Composite layers (2 mol% of Ag-2411 and Nb-2411) exhibit Jc values at 77 K of up to 5.1 MA/cm2, which is 3 to 4 times higher than those observed in films deposited from phase pure Y-123 ceramics. A cross-sectional study of horse owners’ awareness and perceived risk of exotic diseases in the United Kingdom
The international nature of the equine industry provides opportunities for the spread of infectious diseases between countries. While incursions of exotic diseases into the United Kingdom (UK) equine population have been rare, the potential socioeconomic and welfare impacts are a significant concern. However, little is known about leisure horse owners’ ability or willingness to prepare for an exotic disease incursion. The objectives of this study were to describe UK leisure horse owners’ awareness and perceptions of exotic diseases, and to identify clusters of horse owners characterised by their awareness and perceived risk of exotic diseases. A cross-sectional study of leisure horse owners in the UK was conducted between April and July 2018. Participants (n = 403) completed an online questionnaire with questions pertaining to demographics, experiences with endemic diseases, and awareness and perceptions of exotic diseases. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to identify groups of participants that were similar in regard to their awareness and perceived risk of exotic diseases. Participants identified a median of 3 (IQR 2 – 4) exotic diseases, with the most recognised exotic diseases being African horse sickness and West Nile virus. The most frequently mentioned clinical signs that participants thought were associated with exotic diseases included high temperature (57.2%), discharge (46.5%), and lack of energy (41.2%). Hierarchical cluster analysis identified three clusters of participants: 1) those who were aware of exotic diseases and perceived a high amount of risk (n = 78); 2) those who were aware of exotic diseases but perceived a low amount of risk (n = 111); and 3) those who were less aware of exotic diseases and perceived a low amount of risk (n = 214). Efforts to communicate the relevance and consequences of exotic diseases to horse owners should consider the potential difference in receptiveness among horse owners in each cluster. Further investigations are required to determine the implications of horse owners’ perceived risk on exotic disease preparedness
