    What Elderly Adults Do to Cope with Feelings of Shyness: A Content Analysis and Evaluation of Self-Selected Coping Strategies

    Previous research has documented a consistent pattern of the self-selected strategies that shy adolescents (Carducci et al. 2003; Carducci, Elbedour, and Alsubie 2015) and adults (Carducci 2009; Carducci and Bocchiaro 2011) use to deal with their shyness. The purpose of the present study was to extend this previous research by attempting to identify and assess the self-selected strategies used by elderly adults to deal with shyness. The participants in the present study were 95 individuals (25 males and 70 females, with mean ages of 59.9 and 56.3 years, respectively) who completed a self-report inventory examining various intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions of shyness. Consistent with previous research, the most frequently used strategies by elderly adults to deal with shyness tended to include “forced extraversion” (e.g., willfully going to social events), “cognitive self-reassurance” (e.g., self-affirming statements to build confidence), “sought professional help” (e.g., counseling and psychotherapy), and “educational extraversion” (e.g., read self-help book). The overall pattern of results documents the extent to which elderly adults respond to shyness in a manner similar to shy adolescents and adults. Suggestions for how shy elderly adults might improve the effectiveness of these self-selected strategies for dealing with shyness are also presented

    Shedding light upon the complex net of genome size, genome composition and environment in chordates

    The nucleotype theory has been advanced on the basis of studies regarding genome size and composition in various plant and animal species, i.e. the influence that genome can have on the phenotype independently of the informational content of DNA. It has also been noted that during evolution various interactions between different environmental factors and genome structural and functional parameters would have occurred. In this review, changes in genome size, transposon content, and base composition occurred during the evolution of chordates were examined. Many environmental stresses, such as temperature, can act on transposons and through these on genome size. Temperature is also one of the most important elements of natural selection able to interact both with base composition and genome size. It has been evidenced that temperature exerts a direct influence on base composition and its increase would have led to an higher content of genome GC-rich components during the evolution of chordates, in particular in endotherms. Temperature would have controlled the rate of biosynthesis in G1 phase and consequently the cell cycle duration which in turn would have interacted with genome size. The combined action of temperature, base composition, and genome size would also have been very important in controlling the metabolic rate. Finally, another important aspect of the nucleotypic effect is the influence that genome size and cell cycle duration, in correlation with environmental temperature, would have exert on embryo and larval development, very important for environmental adaptation. In conclusion, studies here reviewed to confirm the existence in chordates of a mutual influence between environment and genome non-coding components that would have played an important role in the evolution of these animals especially in environmental adaptation processes

    Epidemiological surveillance of human enteric viruses by monitoring of different environmental matrices.

    In the aim of studying possible relations between viruses detected in clinical specimens and the ones found in different environmental matrices, in the period May 2004 to April 2005, the collection of faecal samples from gastroenteritis cases and the monthly monitoring of raw and treated wastewater, river water, seawater and mussels were carried out. The viruses considered for environmental monitoring were adenovirus, rotavirus, enterovirus, norovirus, hepatitis A virus (HAV) and Torque teno virus (TTV): they were searched for with PCR and RT-PCR and confirmed by gene sequencing. Faecal coliforms and somatic coliphages' counts were also determined. The surveillance of case detected 45 positive faecal samples out of 255 (17.6%) while 35 of 56 environmental samples (62.5%) resulted positive for at least one of the considered viruses. The detection of the same viral strain in the faeces of gastroenteritis cases and in water was possible for adenovirus and rotavirus, which were also predominant in environmental matrices; thus they could be considered as a reference for risk assessment

    Executive function impairment in early - treated PKU subjects with normal mental development

    Executive functions were studied in 14 early and continuously treated PKU subjects (age 10.8 years, range 8-13) in comparison with controls matched for IQ, sex, age and socioeconomic status. Brain MRI examination was normal in all PKU patients. Neuropsychological evaluation included Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Rey-Osterreith Complex Figure Test, Elithorn's Perceptual Maze Test, Weigl's Sorting Test, Tower of London, Visual Search and Motor Motor Learning Test. Whatever the IQ, PKU subjects performed worse than controls in tests exploring executive functions. Subgrouping the PKU subjects according to the quality of dietary control for the entire follow-up period (using 400 micromol/L as cut-off value for blood phenylalanine (Phe) concentration) showed that patients with worse dietary control performed more poorly than both the PKU group with the best dietary control and the control group. However, a mild impairment of executive functions was still found in PKU patients with a good dietary control (Phe 400 micromol/L) compared to controls. Concerning the PKU group as a whole, no linear correlation was found between neuropsychological performance and historical and concurrent biochemical parameters. We conclude that (a) PKU patients, even when treated early, rigorously and continuously, show an impairment of frontal lobe functions; (b) a protracted exposure to moderately high levels of Phe can affect frontal lobe functions independently of the possible effect of the same exposure on IQ; (c) in order to reduce the risk of frontal lobe dysfunction, the target of dietary therapy should be to maintain blood Phe concentration below 400 micromol/L

    How Should Institutions of Higher Education Define and Measure Student Success? Student Success as Liberal Education Escapes Definition and Measurement

    [First paragraph] The question structuring this chapter begins with the presumption that we should define and measure student success. The perspective missing from this question is: What possibilities exist for versions of student success in excess of its definition and measurement? Measurements ask us to standardize definitions of success—say, four-year graduation—and work to produce all students in this image. As a former academic adviser, I can read a university catalog and tell you the quickest pathways to graduation a university has to offer. This makes me an asset to institutions that place a value on student success as measured by graduation rates, but does shuttling students to majors with comparatively lax degree requirements produce an expansive version of student success? I am the last person to argue that metrics of student success such as college graduation lack all meaning. However, when measurements of achievements like college graduation become the focus of student affairs practice, they warp our institutions and our students in their image.1 I use graduation here as it is the most frequently cited definition of student success today, but this logic follows no matter what definition you substitute in its place. In what follows, I argue that definitions and measurements of student success construct student realities in ways that are counterproductive to liberal education, and liberal education is the ineffable outcome of higher education that produces students capable of changing the structures of our profoundly problematic world

    CTX-M-15 Type Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-Producing Enterobacter cloacae In Bioaerosol of a Municipal Solid Waste Recycling Plant: A New Possible Reservoir of Infection?

    Background: Although there are many reports of antibiotic resistant microorganisms released from the treated municipal wastewater, less attention has been given to other waste treatment activities. We report the occurrence of antibiotic resistant strains isolated from the working setting of a solid waste recycling plant in Italy which serves 195 municipalities. Methods: To assess microbial contamination levels, several sampling points were chosen for their relevance in evaluating exposure of the workers to biological risk, especially during indoor operations. Active sampling was carried out using the Surface Air System and Rodac plate method was applied to surface sampling. Species identification and antimicrobial susceptibilities were obtained by Vitek2 System (bioMérieux, France) and by the agar-diffusion method. The presence of resistance genes was investigated by multiplex PCR assay. Results: In all sampling points a significant contamination of aerosol was detected, although the total microbial counts resulted within the limit proposed by the National authority (10000 CFU/sqm). The counts of Enterobacteriaceae were always above the limit of 100 CFU/sqm and strains of Enterobacter cloacae resistant to third generation cephalosporins were detected, carrying the blaCTX-M15 gene. Conclusions: The contamination of workplace with multidrug-resistant strains is a crucial area for public health actions to avoid the conjunction of factors that promote evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance

    Does Valproic Acid Induce Neuroendocrine Differentiation in Prostate Cancer?

    Valproic Acid (VPA) is a histone deacetylase inhibitor that holds promise for cancer therapy. Here, we investigate whether VPA treatment induces neuroendocrine differentiation of Prostate Cancer (PCa). A tissue microarray of VPA-treated and untreated tumor xenografts and cell lines of human PCa (LNCaP, C4-2, DU145, and PC-3) were generated and were analyzed by immunohistochemical analysis (IHC) for NE markers chromogranin A (CgA), synaptophysin, and NCAM (neural cell adhesion molecule). Western blot analysis for CgA was performed to confirm the results of the TMA. IHC analysis did not reveal any induction of CgA, synaptophysin, or NCAM in any xenograft after VPA treatment in vivo. In vitro, VPA treatment induced little synaptophysin expression in C4-2 and PC-3 cells and NCAM expression in LNCaP and PC-3 cells. In the case of CgA, VPA treatment decreased its expression in vitro in a dose-dependent manner, as determined by western blot analysis. Thus our data demonstrates that VPA does not induce NE differentiation of PCa cells in the physiologically relevant in vivo setting

    Meropenem vs standard of care for treatment of neonatal late onset sepsis (NeoMero1): A randomised controlled trial.

    BACKGROUND: The early use of broad-spectrum antibiotics remains the cornerstone for the treatment of neonatal late onset sepsis (LOS). However, which antibiotics should be used is still debatable, as relevant studies were conducted more than 20 years ago, recruited in single centres or countries, evaluated antibiotics not in clinical use anymore and had variable inclusion/exclusion criteria and outcome measures. Moreover, antibiotic-resistant bacteria have become a major problem in many countries worldwide. We hypothesized that efficacy of meropenem as a broad-spectrum antibiotic is superior to standard of care regimens (SOC) in empiric treatment of LOS and aimed to compare meropenem to SOC in infants aged 44 weeks meeting the Goldstein criteria of sepsis, were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive meropenem or one of the two SOC regimens (ampicillin+gentamicin or cefotaxime+gentamicin) chosen by each site prior to the start of the study for 8-14 days. The primary outcome was treatment success (survival, no modification of allocated therapy, resolution/improvement of clinical and laboratory markers, no need of additional antibiotics and presumed/confirmed eradication of pathogens) at test-of-cure visit (TOC) in full analysis set. Stool samples were tested at baseline and Day 28 for meropenem-resistant Gram-negative organisms (CRGNO). The primary analysis was performed in all randomised patients and in patients with culture confirmed LOS. Proportions of participants with successful outcome were compared by using a logistic regression model adjusted for the stratification factors. From September 3, 2012 to November 30th 2014, total of 136 patients (instead of planned 275) in each arm were randomized; 140 (52%) were culture positive. Successful outcome at TOC was achieved in 44/136 (32%) in the meropenem arm vs. 31/135 (23%) in the SOC arm (p = 0.087). The respective numbers in patients with positive cultures were 17/63 (27%) vs. 10/77 (13%) (p = 0.022). The main reason of failure was modification of allocated therapy. Treatment emergent adverse events occurred in 72% and serious adverse events in 17% of patients, the Day 28 mortality was 6%. Cumulative acquisition of CRGNO by Day 28 occurred in 4% of patients in the meropenem and 12% in the SOC arm (p = 0.052). CONCLUSIONS: Within this study population, we found no evidence that meropenem was superior to SOC in terms of success at TOC, short term hearing disturbances, safety or mortality were similar in both treatment arms but the study was underpowered to detect the planned effect. Meropenem treatment did not select for colonization with CRGNOs. We suggest that meropenem as broad-spectrum antibiotic should be reserved for neonates who are more likely to have Gram-negative LOS, especially in NICUs where microorganisms producing extended spectrum- and AmpC type beta-lactamases are circulating
