    A new proof of the existence of suitable weak solutions and other remarks for the Navier-Stokes equations

    We prove that the limits of the semi-discrete and the discrete semi-implicit Euler schemes for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations upplemented with Dirichlet boundary conditions are suitable in the sense of Scheffer. This provides a new proof of the existence of suitable weak solutions, first established by Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg. Our results are similar to the main result in Guermond, J.-L.     Exploratory study of the use of community treatment orders with clients of an Ontario ACT team

    Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) have raised questions about coercion, lack of autonomy, and effectiveness in reducing hospitalizations and improving service users’ quality of life. This study examined the experiences of clients and clinicians when CTOs are used in combination with Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) in a recovery oriented approach. Eleven clients who were or had previously been on a CTO and eight ACT clinicians were interviewed. Although most clients had negative feelings about CTOs, some acknowledged their lives had improved. Clinicians reported that the decision to employ a CTO is sometimes debated within the team but they agreed that combining CTOs and ACT resulted in regular access to mental health supports, fewer hospitalizations and overall improvement of quality of life for their clients

    Family diversity from the perspective of future Early Childhood Education teachers: Training needs

    Teniendo en cuenta que la presencia de la familia es fundamental para el desarrollo integral del menor, y que el docente de Educación Infantil tendrá que cooperar con ella para optimizarlo, se ha decidido indagar sobre qué formación se ofrece desde el Grado de Educación Infantil en Diversidad Familiar, así como conocer cómo perciben la familia los futuros docentes. Esta investigación se focaliza en los futuros docentes de Educación Infantil y pretende determinar qué identifican como familia y cómo valoran la formación recibida para dar una respuesta educativa de calidad ante la diversidad familiar. Han participado 150 estudiantes de grado y egresados, cumplimentando una cuestionario ah doc. Desde el punto de vista metodológico, se calcularon los estadísticos descriptivos (media y desviación típica) y frecuencias, así como la prueba Kruskal-Wallis para comprobar si existían diferencias significativas. Los resultados mostraron que la familia nuclear tradicional continúa siendo la más identificada, y que en las tipologías familiares señaladas influyen el curso, la filiación religiosa y la tendencia política. Además, la formación aún es insuficiente y no conocen suficientes recursos para abordarla.Bearing in mind that the presence of the family is fundamental for the integral development of the child, and that the Early Childhood Education teacher will have to cooperate with it in order to optimize it, it has been decided to investigate what training is offered from the Early Childhood Education Degree on Family Diversity, as well as to find out how future teachers perceive the family. This research focuses on future Early Childhood Education teachers and aims to determine what they identify as family and how they value the training received in order to provide a quality educational response to family diversity. 150 undergraduate students have participated as graduates, filling out a questionnaire ah doc. From the methodological point of view, the descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation) and frequencies were calculated, as well as Kruskal-Wallis test to check if significant differences existed. The results showed that the traditional nuclear family continues to be the most identified, and that the family typologies indicated are influenced by course, religious affiliation and political tendency. Furthermore, training is still insufficient and they do not know enough resources to deal with it

    Feasibility of Self-Performed Lung Ultrasound with Remote Teleguidance for Monitoring at Home COVID-19 Patients

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, use of telemedicine with the aim of reducing the rate of viral transmission increased. This proof-of-concept observational study was planned to test the feasibility of a home-based lung ultrasound (LUS) follow-up performed by patients with mild COVID-19 infection on themselves. We enrolled patients presenting to the emergency department with SARS-CoV-2 infection without signs of pneumonia and indication to discharge. Each patient received a brief training on how to perform LUS and a handheld ultrasound probe. Then, patients were contacted on a daily basis, and LUS images were acquired by the patients themselves under “teleguidance” by the investigator. Twenty-one patients were enrolled with a median age of 44 years. All evaluations were of sufficient quality for a follow up. Probability of a better LUS quality was related to higher degree (odds ratio, OR, 1.42, 95% CI 0.5–3.99) and a lower quality to evaluation time (from 0.71, 95% CI 0.55–0.92 for less than 7 min, to 0.52, 95% CI 0.38–0.7, between 7 and 10 min, and to 0.29, 95% CI 0.2–0.43, for evaluations longer than 10 min). No effect related to gender or age was detected. LUS performed by patients and remotely overseen by expert providers seems to be a feasible and reliable telemedicine tool

    The Role of the Immune System in Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma

    Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is the second most common skin cancer. In immunosuppressed populations it is a source of considerable morbidity and mortality due to its enhanced recurrence and metastatic potential. In common with many malignancies, leucocyte populations are both protective against cancer development and also play a role in ‘sculpting’ the nascent tumor, leading to loss of immunogenicity and tumor progression. UV radiation and chronic viral carriage may represent unique risk factors for cSCC development, and the immune system plays a key role in modulating the response to both. In this review, we discuss the lessons learned from animal and ex vivo human studies of the role of individual leucocyte subpopulations in the development of cutaneous SCC. We then discuss the insights into cSCC immunity gleaned from studies in humans, particularly in populations receiving pharmacological immunosuppression such as transplant recipients. Similar insights in other malignancies have led to exciting and novel immune therapies, which are beginning to emerge into the cSCC clinical arena

    Cosmopolitan distribution of Endozoicomonas-like organisms and other intracellular microcolonies of bacteria causing infection in marine molluscs

    Intracellular microcolonies of bacteria, in some cases developing large extracellular cysts, have been historically reported infecting a wide diversity of economically important mollusc species worldwide, sometimes associated with severe lesions and mass mortality events. As an effort to characterise those organisms, traditionally named as Rickettsia or Chlamydia -like organisms (RLO/CLO), via international collaboration, 98 samples comprising 20 mollusc species were collected over 10 countries and examined using histology and phylogenetic analysis. A 16S rRNA gene amplicon library-based sequencing showed the presence of different species of Endozoicomonas-like organisms (ELO) in all the mollusc species analysed, infecting primarily gill and digestive glands. Co-infections of ELOs with other intracellular bacteria were also observed. Subsequent phylogenetic analysis of Operational Taxonomic Units (OTU) revealed a novel microbial diversity associated with molluscan RLO/CLOs infection distributed along different taxa, including Spirochaetes phyla, Rickettsiales order, Simkaniaceae family, Mycoplasma and Francisella genera, and sulfur-oxidizing endosymbionts. Sequences like Francisella halioticida/philomiragia and Candidatus Brownia rhizoecola were also obtained. The presence of ELO sequences in the RLO/CLO infection was confirmed by standard PCR, Sanger sequencing, and by in situ hybridisation in a selection of samples. The phylogenetic analysis conducted in this study will allow for further characterization of the microbial community associated with Rickettsia and Chlamydia-like infection in marine molluscs and their correlation with severity of the lesions in order to reveal their role as endosymbionts, commensals or true pathogens.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Tenascin-C Enhances Pancreatic Cancer Cell Growth and Motility and Affects Cell Adhesion through Activation of the Integrin Pathway

    Background: Pancreatic cancer (PDAC) is characterized by an abundant fibrous tissue rich in Tenascin-C (TNC), a large ECM glycoprotein mainly synthesized by pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs). In human pancreatic tissues, TNC expression increases in the progression from low-grade precursor lesions to invasive cancer. Aim of this study was the functional characterization of the effects of TNC on biologic relevant properties of pancreatic cancer cells. Methods: Proliferation, migration and adhesion assays were performed on pancreatic cancer cell lines treated with TNC or grown on a TNC-rich matrix. Stable transfectants expressing the large TNC splice variant were generated to test the effects of endogenous TNC. TNC-dependent integrin signaling was investigated by immunoblotting, immunofluorescence and pharmacological inhibition. Results: Endogenous TNC promoted pancreatic cancer cell growth and migration. A TNC-rich matrix also enhanced migration as well as the adhesion to the uncoated growth surface of poorly differentiated cell lines. In contrast, adhesion to fibronectin was significantly decreased in the presence of TNC. The effects of TNC on cell adhesion were paralleled by changes in the activation state of paxillin and Akt.     What we learn about bipolar disorder from large-scale neuroimaging:Findings and future directions from the ENIGMA Bipolar Disorder Working Group

    MRI-derived brain measures offer a link between genes, the environment and behavior and have been widely studied in bipolar disorder (BD). However, many neuroimaging studies of BD have been underpowered, leading to varied results and uncertainty regarding effects. The Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Bipolar Disorder Working Group was formed in 2012 to empower discoveries, generate consensus findings and inform future hypothesis-driven studies of BD. Through this effort, over 150 researchers from 20 countries and 55 institutions pool data and resources to produce the largest neuroimaging studies of BD ever conducted. The ENIGMA Bipolar Disorder Working Group applies standardized processing and analysis techniques to empower large-scale meta- and mega-analyses of multimodal brain MRI and improve the replicability of studies relating brain variation to clinical and genetic data. Initial BD Working Group studies reveal widespread patterns of lower cortical thickness, subcortical volume and disrupted white matter integrity associated with BD. Findings also include mapping brain alterations of common medications like lithium, symptom patterns and clinical risk profiles and have provided further insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms of BD. Here we discuss key findings from the BD working group, its ongoing projects and future directions for large-scale, collaborative studies of mental illness
