O que significa Estudos de Cultura?: um diagnóstico cosmopolita sobre o caso da cultura alemã

The article discusses Culture Studies as a field of study negotiating its methods and paradigms vis-a-vis the social oriented Cultural Studies, as well as the hermeneutic tradition of the Kulturwissenschaften. Focusing on the case-study of German Culture, it is further argued that Culture Studies is a metadiscipline, and a problem-oriented field of study, that responds to the need to reflect complexity in the contemporary world and clearly presents the relevance of the Humanities for the disclosure of meaning in democratic societies.O artigo discute a formação do campo de Estudos de Cultura relativamente a duas formações geralmente a ele associadas, os Estudos Culturais e as Ciências da Cultura, de vertente literário-hermenêutica. A partir do estudo de caso da subdisciplina Cultura alemã, argumenta-se que os Estudos de Cultura se definem como campo de estudos metadisciplinar e organizado de forma temática, respondendo à exigência de complexidade das sociedades contemporâneas e demonstrando a relevância das Humanidades para a produção de sentido nas sociedades democráticas

Terrores nocturnos: a noite e a estética noir em Edgar Allan Poe

Partindo de uma discussão acerca da modernidade escópica, o ensaio discute a pedagogia dos limites associada à noite na teoria cultural e filosófica e o modo como a penetração do espaço nocturno veio modificar a relação do sujeito com o mundo na era moderna, ancorando-se numa análise representativa de textos de Edgar Allan Poe. A tecnologia da luz articula-se com a tecnologia da visão num modelo de progresso eufórico contestado nos seus traços ambivalentes no espaço literário, ou mais tarde no cinema. Sem defender uma relação de causalidade, o artigo equaciona a relação entre o ambiente criado visualmente pela literatura de terror do século xix e a estética fílmica. A literatura de terror de Edgar Allan Poe apresenta-se como contra-discurso desta modernidade eufórica e anuncia uma estética visual obscura, que, no século xx, através de um processo de remediação (Grusin/Bolter), se vai configurar no discurso ominoso do film noir.Stemming from a discussion of the concept of scopic modernity, the article analyzes the night as the ultimate psycho-philosophical boundary, disrupted by the penetration of the technologies of light and vision in the 19th century. It further questions the changes prompted by this euphoric development in the subject’s relation to the modern world, particularly through the aesthetic model of the voyeur and its reflection in the work of Edgar Allan Poe, first, and in film noir, later. Through a representative analysis of two of Poe’s tales, this literary discourse is presented as a counter-narrative to the modern project. Without defending a causal nexus between the literary and the filmic, the article claims that this counter-narrative of scopic modernity is, however, remediated (Bolter/Grusin) in the aesthetics of film noir

Na Alemanha multicultural do século XXI, o alemão não é já a expressão contemporânea de uma Ursprache que legitima a unidade do Estado-nação, mas o veículo da interacção de várias nações no terreno do novo Estado multinacional, um espaço de diálogo entre localizações étnicas, religiosas, geográficas e culturais diferenciadas, por vezes nomádicas, e que se vão interligando no domínio em mutação constante da língua. Este modo de inovação é simultaneamente um processo de tradução cultural, que subsititui uma noção de cultura enquanto entidade estabilizadora de uma identidade dita nacional, por uma concepção de cultura enquanto construção mediadora ou espaço intermédio

A question of scale? Lázló Almásy’s desert mapping and its postcolonial rewriting

In the wake of postcolonial studies, questions of power and space have gained pivotal significance and geography has become a powerful tool in cultural analysis. However, the simple and metaphorical use of spatial metaphors, such as the cultural appropriation of mapping and cartography, is problematic in so far as it presumes that space is not complex. The understanding of scale in this article thus does not pretend to be either simple or metaphorical, but rather it signifies a ‘circulatory site’, both a ratio used in cartographic practice and a useful tool to discuss the circulation of meaning among imperial and postcolonial discursive practices. Lázló Almásy was romanticized in Michael Ondaatje’s The English Patient as a love-driven idealist against the backdrop of the somewhat blurred movement of imperial cartographic practice. By looking at Almásy’s 1930s narratives of desert cartography (Schwimmer in der Wüster [Swimmer in the Desert] and Mit Rommels Armee in Libyen [With Rommel’s Army in Libya]), particularly the quest for the Oasis Zarzura, as well as at the articles published by the Geographical Journal of the Royal Geographical Society from 1933 to 1952, a clear-cut image of a power-driven imperial cartography arises that clashes with Ondaatje’s naive depiction. The article draws on the contradictory constellations of desert cartography to discuss the following themes: 1. the very notion of fluidity in the literary and cultural appropriation of cartography, that allows for a problematic blur between hegemony and emergence; and 2. ‘scale’ as a possible and useful analytical tool for the mediation between these two seemingly incompatible positions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
