    Language structure of primary-process thinking

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThis research was formulated within the framework of psychoanalytic theory and deals with the grammatical structure of primary-processing thinking investigated in a particular stae of weakened ego controls (alcohol intoxication). In line with Freud's and Rapaport's formulations on cognitive processes, two types of thinking are differentiated: Primary-process thinking (ideation) and secondary-process thinking (thought). Ideation is characterized as autistic, egocentric, and affect-laden. It is oriented to the immediate present, and does not consider past experiences or future possibilites. It lacks spatial, temporal, and causal organization, does not concern itself with the relations of time and space, and fails to make a definite estimation or evaluation of events and external reality. It is undifferentiated, diffuse, and vague. Since it abides by the laws of syncretic mechanisms, it manifests itself in symbolic forms and when expressed in speech, it is fragmented and disorganized. According to psychoanalytic theory, the primary thought processes can be observed in states of weakened ego controls, such as dreams, psychosis or sometimes neurosis [TRUNCATED

Design of a Microstrip Bandpass Filter for 3.1-10.6 GHz Uwb Systems

    Get PDF
In this thesis, ultra-wideband (UWB) microwave filters and design challenges are studied and, a microstrip UWB filter prototype design is presented. The UWB bandpass filter operating in the 3.6 GHz to 10.6 GHz frequency band is targeted to comply with the FCC spectral mask for UWB systems. The prototype filter is composed of quarter-wavelength spaced shunt stub transmission lines. The circuit is first simulated and optimized by using AWR DE simulation software tool. Then Sonnet EM Simulation and CST EM Simulation Tools are further utilized to obtain more accurate simulated results. The fabricated microstrip UWB bandpass filter is then measured using a vector network analyzer and results are presented. The prototype built can be used in UWB communications or localization systems

The holding strength of crimps on tubes

The object of this thesis is to determine by analytical means and laboratory tests the holding force of various crimp methods of fastening sheet metals and special tubing. The study is conducted with heat treated Aluminum alloy 24S.T3. The problem of joining relatively thin walled tubing of high strength material or the application of a plug to such a tube has been investigated by many manufacturers, but the literature in this field is limited and still there are many cases where a better method may prove very useful. At the suggestion of Dr. Aaron J. Miles, the author decided to investigate the possibilities of using a crimp for closing or rather plugging tubes --Introduction, page 1

Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Chemical Engineering, Izmir, 2004Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 96)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishxvii, 123 leavesIn this study, the use of Gördes natural zeolite for removing NH4+ ion from wastewater effluent and from NH4Cl solution was investigated under various conditions. The effect of the solid:solution ratio, initial concentration of the solution, presence of competing cation, particle size of the clinoptilolite sample on ammonium ion removal capacity were studied. Highest amount of ammonium removal per gram zeolite was found in the solution having 1% solid: solution ratio. The experimental results indicate that the NH4+ exchange capacity is not dependent on the particle size of the clinoptilolite sample. Increasing the initial concentration increases the NH4+ uptake capacity. NH4+ removal decreases with increasing the initial ammonium concentration. For instance, the higher NH4+ ion concentrations show the 30.5-55 % removal and lower NH4+ ion concentrations lead to 87-95 % removal for pure ammonium chloride solution. The presence of potassium ion had the most significant effect upon ammonium ion uptake, followed by calcium ion. Magnesium ion had the least effect.Equilibrium data obtained have been found to fit both Langmuir and Freundlich models. The Langmuir model provided excellent equilibrium data fitting (R2>0.995). From the plateau of the isotherms maximum exchange capacities were determined as 9.03, 8.76, 8.695 and 7.84 mg NH4+/gr for NH4+, NH4+-Mg+2, NH4+-Ca+2and NH4+-K+, respectively. As a consequence of this result, the ammonium capacity of Gördes clinoptilolite was approximately 0.51meq/gr for pure ammonium chloride solution. When comparing the removal of NH4+ ion from wastewater effluent and from NH4Cl, the percent removal and the uptake capacity were lower for wastewater than for NH4Cl for same solid: solution ratio and the same initial concentration. It is expected that in domestic wastewater, where the complexity of the system is high, several matter could influence the removal of specific target cations. The decreased ammonium removal for wastewater may be attributed to by the existence of several matters (suspended solid, organic matter) in the wastewater effluent samples, which reduce the ammonium exchange capacity.experimental results indicate a significant potential for the Gördes clinoptilolite rich mineral as an ion exchange material for wastewater treatment and water reuse application
