The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different canopy management practices on canopy microclimate and consequently berry quality components of the Merlot (Vitis vinifera L.) grape variety. Different microclimate effects were created by the limitations of 1 m, 1.25 m and 1.5 m main shoot lengths and full lateral shoots (FLS), half lateral shoots (HLS) and no lateral shoots (NLS). Microclimatic data was gathered by the sensors placed in the canopies of FLS, HLS and NLS vines located under the 1.25 m main shoot length parcel. In the study, total soluble solids content, titratable acidity, pH, total phenolic content, total anthocyanin content, total tannin content, tartaric and malic acid content and potassium content in the juice were evaluated as the biochemical quality properties. The results of two years indicated that canopy microclimate arrangements may provide some manipulation on grape berry quality according to the vegetation period's climate characteristics and the desired target quality within limits of macro-meso climate effects.Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies [TAGEM/BBAD/2013/A08/P04-08]This study is based on a part of the doctoral thesis of the corresponding author and supported by Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies with the project number TAGEM/BBAD/2013/A08/P04-08

Changes of Vine Water Status and Growth Parameters Under Different Canopy Management on cv. Merlot (Vitis vinifera L.)

The climate is the dominant regulator that determines the cultivation in a viticulture region as it strongly controls vine physiology, vine growth, canopy microclimate, berry quality and finally wine components. However, the effects of climate change force vine producers to Find solutions that will facilitate their adaptation processes. The importance of water management in vineyards is becoming more important every day for sustainable viticulture and winemaking. Efficient use of water in vineyards is an important issue to control the yield and to provide the targeted berry quality at the desired level. This experiment was carried out during the 2013-2014 and 2015 growing seasons to evaluate the effects of green pruning practices on water leaf potentials of 12-14 years old grapevines of cv. Merlot (Vitis vinifera L.) grafted onto Kober 5BB in the experimental vineyard of Tekirdag Viticulture Research Institute in Turkey. A completely randomized block design was used: LRMS1, LRMS2, LRMS3 represent three levels of leaf removal treatments on main shoots and LRLS1, LRLS2, LRLS3 represent three levels of leaf removal treatments on lateral shoots. Due to the relatively high soil moisture in vineyard conditions, no extreme and high-water stress levels was observed in experiment years. The main factor controlling the water status in cv. Merlot vines was largely dependent on the meso-climatic conditions and soil water availability during the growing season. However it was observed that increasing of main shoot length give rise to tendency to water stress. It was determined that leaf removal treatments on lateral shoots caused changes in shoot weight, pruning weight and Ravaz index (RI), especially in 2014 whereas the leaf removal treatments on main shoots caused changes in mentioned parameters in 2015. In conclusion, the results show that plant water condition can be managed with summer pruning taking into account of different climatic conditions and different phonological stages. Planning of canopy management practices should be done by considering long- and medium-term meteorological evaluations while short-term planning within vegetation period should be done in relation to weekly and monthly meteorological data.Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies [TAGEM/BBAD/2013/A08/P04-08]The study was supported by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies with the project number TAGEM/BBAD/2013/A08/P04-08

Military expenditures and economic growth in Turkey

Get PDF
Cataloged from PDF version of article. This study estimates the impact of military expenditures on economic growth in Turkey over the period of 1950-2001 by employing a cointegration analysis developed by Engle and Granger (1987). The model integrates some of the commonly used variables in defence economics models into a simple growth specification and allows the influences of the defence spending on economic growth to be revealed empirically. The results indicate that military expenditures have a positive effect on economic growth both in the long and in the short run.

La disparition rapide du premier laisse le second conduire à sa guise l’association et sa revue, insérées dans une sociabilité érudite, laïque et républicaine, dont la situation périphérique par rapport au monde universitaire comme aux grandes organisations politiques dominantes constitua sans doute aussi un gage de pérennité.“Democratic Spirit”, “Scientific Spirit” and the Birth of the Société d’histoire de la Révolution de 1848 The birth and beginnings of the Société d’histoire de la révolution de 1848 should be studied in relation with a two-fold background: Republican politics in the times of the Bloc des gauches and the organisation of research at a time when history was being structured as a discipline and as scientific activity. In both cases, Henry Michel and Georges Renard represented two close, yet distinct orientations. The early death of the former allowed the latter to lead both the association and the review as he thought fit, within a learned, secular and republican sociability whose situation on the fringe both of the larger academic world and of the main political organisations no doubt also contributed to guarantee its longevity

Acute kidney injury following supine mini-PNL versus retrograde intrarenal surgery in patients with renal stones < 3 cm: a prospective comparative study

Get PDF
Background: The purpose of the current study was to prospectively compare mini-PNL and RIRS for development of acute kidney injury (AKI), success, and complication rates in a cohort of patients with kidney stones less than 3 cm. Methods: In this prospective study, data of 60 consecutive patients underwent mini-PNL (n=31) or RIRS (n=29) was investigated. Urinary NGAL levels were measured preoperatively and at postoperative 6th hour to evaluate AKI. Success and complication rates were also compared. Results: The mean stone size was signifcantly higher in the mini-PNL group (24.6 mm vs. 18.2 mm, p=0.02). The mean postoperative NGAL levels were 45.6±12.4 and 48.1±13.6 for the mini-PNL and RIRS groups, respectively. The increase was statistically signifcant for both groups (p: 0.01). The diference between the two groups for mean postoperative NGAL measurements was not statistically signifcant (p=0.47). The SFR was signifcantly higher in the miniPNL group (96.7% vs. 79.3%, p=0.04). The complication rates were similar for the two groups (p=0.99). The mean duration of operation was 48.2±22.5 min in the mini-PNL group and 62.6±18.1 min in the RIRS group (p=0.03). The median duration of hospitalization was 1 day for both groups. Conclusions: In patients with renal stones<3 cm in diameter, mini-PNL in supine position provides higher SFR and shorter operative times with similar rates of complications and AKI when compared with RIRS. Mini-PNL should be considered as the primary treatment option together with RIRS for renal stones and should not be ruled out for being a more invasive option

Mycosis fungoides and vitamin D status: Analyses of serum 25-hidroxyvitamin D levels and single nucleotide polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor gene

Various types of cancer, including melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, are associated with vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms. However, few studies have addressed VDR polymorphisms in patients with mycosis fungoides (MF), and previous studies have reported conflicting results. Aim of this case-control study was to assess the correlation between VDR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) Cdx2, Fok1, Apa1, Bsm1, and Taq1 and MF. Venous blood samples were collected from 41 patients with MF and 59 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. VDR genotypes of both groups were analyzed. Serum vitamin D levels of patients with MF were also analysed among varying stages and VDR genotypes. Vitamin D levels were significantly low (<30 ng/mL) in 87.9% of the patients (P<0.001). No associations were found between Apa1, Cdx2, Fok1, and Bsm1 SNPs and MF. However, Taq1 polymorphisms were higher in the healthy control group (P<0.001). Our study supports the claim that vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with MF. On the other hand, our findings suggest that Taq1 polymorphisms may be associated with decreased susceptibility to MF. Therefore, VDRs may have complex and heterogeneous effects on the pathogenesis of MF. </p
