Parler and the Road to the Capitol Attack: Investigating Alt-Tech Ties to January 6
The January 6, 2021 mob assault on the U.S. Capitol exposed deep fissures between Americans and shook the very foundations of the country. The violence that day and the tech industry's response to the tsunami of polarizing content triggered a major public debate over how social media and tech companies manage their platforms and services and the impact of content moderation policies on polarization, extremism, and political violence in the United States. That debate is also now playing out in Congress where the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol is now underway. One big question is: How did niche social media sites geared toward far-right audiences, like Parler, contribute to polarization around the 2020 presidential election and to what extent did Parler and other platforms factor into the January 6 attack? The first in a series of investigations into the impact of the alt-tech movement on U.S. national security, this report provides an initial snapshot of observations culled from an ongoing analysis of open source data related to the Capitol attack.Based, in part, on an early assessment of a cache of an estimated 183 million Parler posts publicly archived after Parler was temporarily deplatformed, the analysis in this report offers unique insights into online and offline early warning signs of the potential for election-related violence in the year-long run up to the Capitol attack. On the streets and online, the networked effects of poor platform governance across the internet during the 2020 presidential election were notable on mainstream and fringe social media sites. Nevertheless, the combined impact of Parler's loose content moderation scheme as well as data-management practices and platform featuresâeither by design or neglect, or bothâmay have made the social media startup especially vulnerable to strategic influence campaigns that relied heavily on inauthentic behavior like automated content amplification and deceptive techniques like astroturfing
Teaching Postqualitatively
The purpose of this article is to explore how teachers, scholars, and mentors teach postqualitatively in diverse ways. Teaching postqualitatively does not easily conform with the delivery of set learning outcomes nor does it seek to measure learner progress or teaching quality in prescriptive and traditional ways. Rather, this kind of teaching could be seen as the task of the impossible and calls for the curious seeker and infinite learner, resembling art, craft, and creation. The more we attempt to describe and articulate how we have in the past, through literature and collective experiences, and how we could teach postqualitative research in the future, the more the inquiry practices and learning assemblages escape and disappear. We wonder what collective affects and practices are associated with teaching and learning postqualitatively and what speculative postqualitative practices of the futures may produce
Advancing socioecological mental health promotion intervention: A mixed methods exploration of Phase 1 Agenda Gap findings
Introduction: Protecting and promoting the mental health of youth under 30 years of age is a priority, globally. Yet investment in mental health promotion, which seeks to strengthen the determinants of positive mental health and wellbeing, remains limited relative to prevention, treatment, and recovery. The aim of this paper is to contribute empirical evidence to guide innovation in youth mental health promotion, detailing the early outcomes of Agenda Gap, an intervention centering youth-led policy advocacy to influence positive mental health for individuals, families, communities and society.Methods: Leveraging a convergent mixed methods design, this study draws on data from n = 18 youth (ages 15 to 17) in British Columbia, Canada, who contributed to pre- and post-intervention surveys and post-intervention qualitative interviews following their participation in Agenda Gap from 2020-2021. These data are supplemented by qualitative interviews with n = 4 policy and other adult allies. Quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed in parallel, using descriptive statistics and reflexive thematic analysis, and then merged for interpretation.Results: Quantitative findings suggest Agenda Gap contributes to improvements in mental health promotion literacy as well as several core positive mental health constructs, such as peer and adult attachment and critical consciousness. However, these findings also point to the need for further scale development, as many of the available measures lack sensitivity to change and are unable to distinguish between higher and lower levels of the underlying construct. Qualitative findings provided nuanced insights into the shifts that resulted from Agenda Gap at the individual, family, and community level, including reconceptualization of mental health, expanded social awareness and agency, and increased capacity for influencing systems change to promote positive mental health and wellbeing.Discussion: Together, these findings illustrate the promise and utility of mental health promotion for generating positive mental health impacts across socioecological domains. Using Agenda Gap as an exemplar, this study underscores that mental health promotion programming can contribute to gains in positive mental health for individual intervention participants whilst also enhancing collective capacity to advance mental health and equity, particularly through policy advocacy and responsive action on the social and structural determinants of mental health
A Comparison of One Year Outcomes Between Standardized Locomotor Training and Usual Care After Motor Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury: Community Participation, Quality of Life and Re-Hospitalization
CONTEXT/OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in a significant loss of mobility and independence coinciding with reports of decreased quality of life (QOL), community participation, and medical complications often requiring re-hospitalization. Locomotor training (LT), the repetition of stepping-like patterning has shown beneficial effects for improving walking ability after motor incomplete SCI, but the potential impact of LT on psychosocial outcomes has not been well-established. The purpose of this study was to evaluate one year QOL, community participation and re-hospitalization outcomes between individuals who participated in a standardized LT program and those who received usual care (UC).
DESIGN/SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: A retrospective (nested case/control) analysis was completed using SCI Model Systems (SCIMS) data comparing one year post-injury outcomes between individuals with traumatic motor incomplete SCI who participated in standardized LT to those who received UC.
OUTCOME MEASURES: Outcomes compared include the following: Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLSâą), Craig Handicap Assessment and Reporting Technique-Short Form (CHART-SFâą), and whether or not an individual was re-hospitalized during the first year of injury.
RESULTS: Statistically significant improvements for the LT group were found in the following outcomes: SWLS (Pâ=â0.019); and CHART subscales [mobility (Pâ=
CONCLUSION: Individuals who completed a standardized LT intervention reported greater improvements in satisfaction with life, community participation, and fewer re-hospitalizations at one year post-injury in comparison to those who received UC. Future randomized controlled trials are needed to verify these findings
Postsecondary Completion in Rural Texas: A Statewide Overview
Educate Texas, our client, is a partner and key player in postsecondary education in Texas. The nonprofit seeks to improve postsecondary completion statewide. Under their mission, our capstone was charged with assessing the state of postsecondary completion in Rural Texas. Using a mixed methods approach, the capstone studied institutional, attitudinal, and academic barriers that impede rural students from pursuing and obtaining a postsecondary credential. Why should policymakers and stakeholders focus specifically on the rural student population in Texas for postsecondary enrollment and completion?
Texas ranks below the national average in postsecondary educational enrollment and completion. Texas needs to âenroll immediately 200,000 more studentsâ to reach the national average, according to Closing the Gaps, the Texas Higher Education Coordinator Board strategic plan. Within the state, the issue also applies to rural students.
Only 26% of the most recent Texas high school graduating class tracked as a cohort ended up earning a postsecondary credential.
There are 834,000 rural K-12 students in Texas, which is 18% of the total K-12 enrollment.
Approximately 43% of the rural K-12 student population is considered low income.
With the largest population of rural students in the country, Texas has a unique opportunity to capitalize on the success of these youth completing a postsecondary credential.Educate Texa
Trends in the perceived body size of adolescent males and females in Scotland, 1990â2014: changing associations with mental well-being
Objectives: This paper explores trends in Scottish adolescentsâ body size perceptions and associated mental well-being outcomes. Methods: Data were collected on Scottish 11, 13 and 15-year olds by the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study between 1990 and 2014 (n=42,312). Logistic regression was used to examine changes in the prevalence of over- and underweight perceptions. Ordinal and linear regression was used to examine changes in the association between body perception and mental well-being. Results: Little change was observed in over- or under-weight perceptions between 1990 and 2014. However, relative to those perceiving their body as âabout rightâ, those perceiving themselves as overweight reported decreasing confidence (all groups), decreasing happiness (11- and 13-year old girls) and increasing psychological symptoms (all girls and 15 year-old boys). Perceived underweight is associated with poor well-being, especially in males, but we present little evidence that this is a recent phenomenon. Conclusions: We present evidence suggesting that the influence of body image on adolescent mental health is increasing over time. This may play a role in the recently observed worsening of mental well-being in Scottish adolescents.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context
Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts
