Instability and Periodic Deformation in Bilayer Membranes Induced by Freezing
The instability and periodic deformation of bilayer membranes during freezing
processes are studied as a function of the difference of the shape energy
between the high and the low temperature membrane states. It is shown that
there exists a threshold stability condition, bellow which a planar
configuration will be deformed. Among the deformed shapes, the periodic curved
square textures are shown being one kind of the solutions of the associated
shape equation. In consistency with recent expe rimental observations, the
optimal ratio of period and amplitude for such a texture is found to be

Landslide susceptibility mapping of Cekmece area (Istanbul, Turkey) by conditional probability
International audienceAs a result of industrialization, throughout the world, the cities have been growing rapidly for the last century. One typical example of these growing cities is Istanbul. Today, the population of Istanbul is over 10 millions. Depending on this rapid urbanization, new suitable areas for settlements and engineering structures are necessary. For this reason, the Cekmece area, west of the Istanbul metropolitan area, is selected as the study area, because the landslides are frequent in this area. The purpose of the present study is to produce landslide susceptibility map of the selected area by conditional probability approach. For this purpose, a landslide database was constructed by both air ? photography and field studies. 19.2% of the selected study area is covered by landslides. Mainly, the landslides described in the area are generally located in the lithologies including the permeable sandstone layers and impermeable layers such as claystone, siltstone and mudstone layers. When considering this finding, it is possible to say that one of the main conditioning factors of the landslides in the study area is lithology. In addition to lithology, many landslide conditioning factors are considered during the landslide susceptibility analyses. As a result of the analyses, the class of 5?10° of slope, the class of 180?225 of aspect, the class of 25?50 of altitude, Danisment formation of the lithological units, the slope units of geomorphology, the class of 800?1000 m of distance from faults (DFF), the class of 75?100 m of distance from drainage (DFD) pattern, the class of 0?10m of distance from roads (DFR) and the class of low or impermeable unit of relative permeability map have the higher probability values than the other classes. When compared with the produced landslide susceptibility map, most of the landslides identified in the study area are found to be located in the most (54%) and moderate (40%) susceptible zones. This assessment is also supported by the performance analysis applied at end of the study. As a consequence, the landslide susceptibility map produced herein has a valuable tool for the planning purposes
A Hybrid Quantum Encoding Algorithm of Vector Quantization for Image Compression
Many classical encoding algorithms of Vector Quantization (VQ) of image
compression that can obtain global optimal solution have computational
complexity O(N). A pure quantum VQ encoding algorithm with probability of
success near 100% has been proposed, that performs operations 45sqrt(N) times
approximately. In this paper, a hybrid quantum VQ encoding algorithm between
classical method and quantum algorithm is presented. The number of its
operations is less than sqrt(N) for most images, and it is more efficient than
the pure quantum algorithm.

Experimental Decoy Quantum Key Distribution Up To 130KM Fiber
Decoy State Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), being capable of beating PNS
attack and uncon- ditionally secure, have become an attractive one recently.
But, in many QKD systems, disturbances of transmission channel make quantum bit
error rate (QBER) increase which limits both security distance and key bit rate
of real-life decoy state QKD systems. We demonstrate the two-intensity decoy
QKD with one-way Faraday-Michelson phase modulation system, which is free of
channel dis- turbance and keeps interference fringe visibility (99%) long
period, near 130KM single mode optical fiber in telecom (1550 nm) wavelength.
This is longest distance fiber decoy state QKD system based on two intensity

Assessment of procedure related anxiety and depression in oncologic patients before F-18 FDG PET-CT imaging
Background: The aim of this study was to study objectively the level of anxiety and depression in patients undergoing positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT).One hundred and forty four oncologic out-patients (76 male, 68 female) were included in this study. Methods: All patients were referred to Nuclear Medicine Department for Fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG) PET-CT imaging for the assessment of their malignant or possibly malignant diseases. The Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale and the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory I and II were used to evaluate the anxiety and depression levels in these patients. Results: The mean anxiety and depression scores of The Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale prior to F-18 FDG PET-CT were 9.2 ( ± 3.8) and 6.6 ( ± 3.4), respectively. The mean state and trait anxiety scores of the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory I and II prior to F-18 FDG PET-CT were 40.4 (± 8.5) and 46.62 ± 7.8, respectively. The Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale and the State and Trait Anxiety Inventory I and II anxiety scores were found to be significantly higher in female patients, smokers and in patients with higher stage disease. Conclusion: Our results suggest that F-18 FDG PET-CT imaging may at least contribute to patient's baseline anxiety which is already generated by being an oncology patient, and thus nuclear medicine physicians should handle the patients with extra care to minimize this affect. © 2015, Umut Elboga, et al
The Refined Topological Vertex
We define a refined topological vertex which depends in addition on a
parameter, which physically corresponds to extending the self-dual graviphoton
field strength to a more general configuration. Using this refined topological
vertex we compute, using geometric engineering, a two-parameter (equivariant)
instanton expansion of gauge theories which reproduce the results of Nekrasov.
The refined vertex is also expected to be related to Khovanov knot invariants.Comment: 70 Pages, 23 Figure
Optimal entanglement purifying via entanglement swapping
It is known that entanglement swapping can be used to realize entanglement
purifying. By this way, two particles belong to different non-maximally
entangled pairs can be projected probabilisticly to a maximally entangled state
or to a less entangled state. In this report, we show, when the less entangled
state is obtained, if a unitary transformation is introduced locally, then a
maximally entangled state can be obtained probabilisticly from this less
entangled state. The total successful probability of our scheme is equal to the
entanglement of a single pairpurification (if two original pairs are in the
same non-maximally entangled states) or to the smaller entanglement of a single
pair purification of these two pairs (if two original pairs are not in the same
non-maximally entangled states). The advantage of our scheme is no continuous
