Present-Day Crustal Stress Field from Gcmt Focal Mechanisms Based on the Slip Model.

    Get PDF
The Slip Model is applied to the Global Centroid Moment Tensor database to determine the present day state of stress. Thus, from each focal mechanism the horizontal shortening direction (Dey) and the shape factor of the strain ellipsoid (k`), defined as the relationship between the maximum horizontal shortening and the vertical axis, are calculated. Additionally, this method proposed the neoformed plane from the calculated nodal planes. In this study, to determine the stress configuration at crustal scale, only depths < 40 km are included. Focal mechanisms are grouped in reverse, strike-slip and normal, to analyse its distribution and to determine the b-parameter from Gutenberg-Richter law. Finally, global shape factor and horizontal shortening direction maps are presented

An 8 year old male Pinto horse (Equus caballus) had a history of chronic exudative nodular balanopostitis complicated by secondary bacterial infection dating back to 4 years. Severe chronic wasting, oliguria, stranguria, polydipsia and lymphoadenomegaly of bubos femurales and pre-scapular areas were noted. Euthanasia was performed. Later necropsy was performed systematically by the techniques described for horses. Tissue sections were taken for histopathological examination and were processed by conventional methods. Fecal samples were taken for parasitological studies. Gross examination revealed severe chronic wasting, and exudative balanoposthitis with severe chronic secondary bacterial infection. Evidenced hydroperitoneum lymphoadenomegaly of mesenteric nodes were also observed. Histological sections showed severe chronic balanoposthitis, with focal cell proliferation of squamous cell with abundant spin cells acanthosis, pleomorphism, nuclear hyperchromasia, anaplasia, typical mitotic figures, and atypical consistant presence of abundant pearls corneas. In some areas, granulomas were observed with parasite forms of the genus Habronema. Parasitological results were consistent with eggs of Habronema muscae. In conclusion, the clinical history, and macroscopic and histological findings demonstrate a syndrome of chronic balanopostitis and metastatic squamous cell carcinoma. The spatial and kinematic association between kink bands in rocks with variscan foliation and alpine thrusts in the Central System basement, allow us to deduce that the former have a Cenozoic age, and not variscan or late-variscan. Systematically, the fold axes trend of the kinks is sub-parallel to the strike of the thrusts. Three key outcrops are studied: the Villares de Jadraque thrust, the Valdesotos thrust and the El Atazar back-thrust.Depto. de Geodinámica, Estratigrafía y PaleontologíaFac. de Ciencias GeológicasTRUEpu

PURPOSE: Obesity and depression are among the leading causes of disability in Mexico, but their association has not been explored yet. The aim of the current study was to investigate the association between obesity and depression in Mexican population. METHODS: We used data from the health and nutrition survey (ENSANUT 2012), which is representative of the Mexican population. Obesity was determined using the body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity by measuring waist circumference. Depressive symptoms were reported using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale Short-Form (CES-D-SF, scale 0-21). Regression analyses were performed between obesity and depression, adjusting for gender, age, living with a partner, education, and diabetes history. RESULTS: Obese women had 1.28 (95% CI 1.07-1.53) times the odds of having depression in comparison with normal-weight women, whereas no association was found for men (OR 0.94; 95% CI 0.74-1.19). A significant association between BMI and depressive symptoms score (β = 0.05, 95% CI 0.02-0.07) was present in women, but no association was found for men (β = - 0.02, 95% CI - 0.05 to 0.00). There was a statistically significant association between waist circumference and depression scores again for women (β = 0.03, 95% CI 0.01-0.04) but not for men (β = 0.00, 95% CI - 0.01 to 0.01). No associations were found between abdominal obesity and depression for both genders. No association was found between different obesity severity levels and depression for both genders. CONCLUSION: Obesity was associated with depression in Mexican women, whereas no association was found between obesity and depression in men

Effects of lng Mutations on LngA Expression, Processing, and CS21 Assembly in Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli E9034A

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is a major cause of morbidity in children under 5 years of age in low- and middle-income countries and a leading cause of traveler's diarrhea worldwide. The ability of ETEC to colonize the intestinal epithelium is mediated by fimbrial adhesins, such as CS21 (Longus). This adhesin is a type IVb pilus involved in adherence to intestinal cells in vitro and bacterial self-aggregation. Fourteen open reading frames have been proposed to be involved in CS21 assembly, hitherto only the lngA and lngB genes, coding for the major (LngA) and minor (LngB) structural subunit, have been characterized. In this study, we investigated the role of the LngA, LngB, LngC, LngD, LngH, and LngP proteins in the assembly of CS21 in ETEC strain E9034A. The deletion of the lngA, lngB, lngC, lngD, lngH, or lngP genes, abolished CS21 assembly in ETEC strain E9034A and adherence to HT-29 cells was reduced 90%, compared to wild-type strain. Subcellular localization prediction of CS21 proteins was similar to other well-known type IV pili homologues. We showed that LngP is the prepilin peptidase of LngA, and that ETEC strain E9034A has another peptidase capable of processing LngA, although with less efficiency. Additionally, we present immuno-electron microscopy imagens to show that the LngB protein could be localized at the tip of CS21, and probably helps to control CS21 length. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that the LngA, LngB, LngC, LngD, LngH, and LngP proteins are essential for CS21 assembly, as well as for bacterial aggregation and adherence to HT-29 cells
