Cultural Landscape and Geoconservation: Conceptual Contributions Applied in Serra da Canastra, Brazil

This study deals with the cultural landscape, introduced in the Brazilian environmental legislation in 2009, as which frames and allows the development of geoconservation projects, including the creation of geoparks. It also intends to discuss the relations of cultural landscape and geodiversity conservation in Serra da Canastra region, SW Minas Gerais. The region is notable for a rich combination of natural and cultural heritage. O presente trabalho apresenta a delimitação da Área de Proteção Especial (APE) Vargem das Flores de acordo com o Decreto 20.793, de 08 de setembro de 1980. Situada nos municípios de Betim e Contagem da Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte (RMBH), a APE Vargem das Flores tem fundamental importância no abastecimento hídrico da região e é alvo de conflitos envolvendo a ocupação do solo em seu entorno e o uso da área para lazer. A despeito da importância da adequada gestão da APE para garantia de qualidade e continuidade no fornecimento de água para abastecimento da RMBH, constata-se que sua delimitação apresentada nas bases de dados oficiais apresenta inconsistências em relação ao texto do Decreto que determina sua criação. No presente estudo, demonstrou-se que, através do uso das ferramentas de Sistemas de Informação Geográfica (SIG), foi possível identificar e realizar a correção das informações inconsistentes acerca da poligonal que delimita a APE Vargem das Flores, fornecendo importantes subsídios para o cumprimento da legislação.Abstract The present work presents the limitation of the Vargem das Flores Special Preservation Area (APE) according to the decree 20.793 of 08/09/1980. Located in the district of Betim and Contagem in the Metropolitan Area of Belo Horizonte (RMBH), the APE of Vargem da Flores has a central significance in the hydric supply of the region and it is a conflict target involving the soil occupation in its sorroundings and its use for leisure. Despite the importance of accurate management of the APE to ensure the quality and permanence of the water supply for provision of the RMBH, its limitation presented in the oficial databases shows inconsistencies related to the words of the decree which defines its creation. In the current work it is shown that through the tools of Geographic Information Systems it is possible to identify and perform the ajustments of the inconsistentsinformations about the polygonal which limits the Vargem das Flores APE, providing important aids to the fulfillment of the law
