Structure and stimulus familiarity: A study of memory in chess-players with functional magnetic resonance imaging.
A grandmaster and an international chess master were compared with a group of novices
in a memory task with chess and non-chess stimuli, varying the structure and familiarity
of the stimuli, while functional magnetic resonance images were acquired. The pattern
of brain activity in the masters was different from that of the novices. Masters showed
no differences in brain activity when different degrees of structure and familiarity where
compared; however, novices did show differences in brain activity in such contrasts. The
most important differences were found in the contrast of stimulus familiarity with chess
positions. In this contrast, there was an extended brain activity in bilateral frontal areas
such as the anterior cingulate and the superior, middle, and inferior frontal gyri; furthermore,
posterior areas, such as posterior cingulate and cerebellum, showed great bilateral activation.
These results strengthen the hypothesis that when performing a domain-specific task,
experts activate different brain systems from that of novices. The use of the expertsversus-
novices paradigm in brain imaging contributes towards the search for brain systems
involved in cognitive processes
Left lateralization in autobiographical memory: An fMRI study using the expert archival paradigm
In brain-imaging and behavioural research, studies of autobiographical memory have higher ecological validity than controlled laboratory memory studies. However, they also have less controllability over the variables investigated. Here we present a novel technique—the expert archival paradigm—that increases controllability while maintaining ecological validity. Stimuli were created from games played by two international-level chess masters. We then asked these two players to perform a memory task with stimuli generated from their own games and stimuli generated from other players’ games while they were scanned using fMRI. We found a left lateralised pattern of brain activity which was very similar in both masters. The brain areas activated were the left temporo-parietal junction and left frontal areas. The expert archival paradigm has the advantage of not requiring an interview to assess the participants’ autobiographical memories, and affords the possibility of measuring their accuracy of remembering as well as their brain activity related to remote and recent memories. It can also be used in any field of expertise, including arts, sciences and sports, in which archival data are available

Brain Localisation of Memory Chunks in Chessplayers
Chess experts store domain-specific representations in their long-term memory; due to the activation of such representations, they perform with high accuracy in tasks that require the maintenance of previously seen information. Chunk-based theories of expertise (chunking theory: Chase & Simon, 1973; template theory: Gobet & Simon, 1996) state that expertise is acquired mainly by the acquisition and storage in long-term memory of familiar chunks that allow quick recognition. We tested some predictions of these theories by using fMRI while chessplayers performed a recognition memory task. These theories predict that chessplayers access long-term memory chunks of domain-specific information, which are presumably stored in the temporal lobes. We also predicted that the recognition memory tasks would activate working memory areas in the frontal and parietal lobes. These predictions were supported by the data
Neutron Stars Mass-Radius relations analysis in the Quintessence scenario
In this paper, we explore the effects of General Relativity modification on
the Mass-Radius relations of Neutron Stars induced by the presence of the
Quintessence field. We consider, in particular, the Kiselev model, according to
which the Quintessence field, being present in the entire Universe, might also
be present around massive objects. Considering the Equation of State (EoS) for
Baryonic matter BSk22 derived by A. Y. Potekhin et al., we infer the upper
limit for NS masses in the presence of Quintessence. The presence of
Quintessence generates a peculiar effect for which the Mass-Radius relation is
unvaried and therefore the presence of Quintessence is indistinguishable from
ordinary matter, at least for the Kiselev model studied in this paper.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Influence of electromagnetic interferences on the gravimetric sensitivity of surface acoustic waveguides
Surface acoustic waveguides are increasing in interest for (bio)chemical
detection. The surface mass modification leads to measurable changes in the
propagation properties of the waveguide. Among a wide variety of waveguides,
Love mode has been investigated because of its high gravimetric sensitivity.
The acoustic signal launched and detected in the waveguide by electrical
transducers is accompanied by an electromagnetic wave; the interaction of the
two signals, easily enhanced by the open structure of the sensor, creates
interference patterns in the transfer function of the sensor. The influence of
these interferences on the gravimetric sensitivity is presented, whereby the
structure of the entire sensor is modelled. We show that electromagnetic
interferences generate an error in the experimental value of the sensitivity.
This error is different for the open and the closed loop configurations of the
sensor. The theoretical approach is completed by the experimentation of an
actual Love mode sensor operated under liquid in open loop configuration. The
experiment indicates that the interaction depends on the frequency and the mass

En este trabajo presentamos los estudios con ajedrecistas expertos que hemos realizado en nuestro laboratorio en los últimos años. Llevamos a cabo experimentos con diversas técnicas y variados fenómenos psicológicos. Comenzamos detallando nuestro estudio sobre el debate talento innato vs práctica deliberada. Más adelante, discutimos experimentos con ajedrez a la ciega. Posteriormente, pasamos a desarrollar nuestros escritos sobre inteligencia. Finalmente, presentamos dos técnicas de avanzada: registro de movimientos oculares y resonancia magnética funcional.
Algunos de los experimentos se realizaron para poner a prueba predicciones directas de la "teorĂa de las plantillas" (Gobet y Simon, 1996). Otros trabajos tienen por objetivo traspasar los estudios comportamentales standard a diseños experimentales que requieren nuevas metodologĂas (registro de movimientos oculares y resonancia magnĂ©tica funcional)
Nuestros resultados contribuyeron en varios aspectos. Aportamos nuevos datos para refutar posiciones extremas en el debate talento innato vs práctica deliberada. Hemos extendido los alcances de la teorĂa de las plantillas para explicar otros fenĂłmenos psicolĂłgicos. Corregimos y propusimos nuevas investigaciones en el campo de ajedrez e inteligencia. Contribuimos con datos sobre movimientos oculares que presentan una clara relaciĂłn entre el numero de fijaciones y la performance de los participantes.
Finalmente, en el campo del estudio de las bases neurales de la memoria autobiográfica, hemos diseñado un nuevo paradigma metodológico que soluciona los problemas que aquejaban este dominio. Asimismo, nuestros experimentos con resonancia magnética funcional han aportado datos interesantes para establecer procesos cerebrales de memoria de largo plazo, autobiográfica y procesos "on-line"
Simultaneous surface acoustic wave and surface plasmon resonance measurements: electrodeposition and biological interactions monitoring
We present results from an instrument combining surface acoustic wave (SAW)
propagation and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements. The objective is
to use two independent methods, the former based on adsorbed mass change
measurements and the latter on surface dielectric properties variations, to
identify physical properties of protein layers, and more specifically their
water content. We display mass sensitivity calibration curves using
electrodeposition of copper leading to a sensitivity in liquid of 150
for the Love mode device used here, and the application to monitoring
biological processes. The extraction of protein layer thickness and protein to
water content ratio is also presented for S-layer proteins under investigation.

Herbert Simon's decision-making approach: Investigation of cognitive processes in experts

However, despite his effort to investigate this question, his work did not have the impact in the “decision making” community that it had in other fields. His rejection of the assumption of perfect rationality, made in mainstream economics, led him to develop the concept of bounded rationality. Simon's approach also emphasized the limitations of the cognitive system, the change of processes due to expertise, and the direct empirical study of cognitive processes involved in decision making. In this article, we argue that his subsequent research program in problem solving and expertise offered critical tools for studying decision-making processes that took into account his original notion of bounded rationality. Unfortunately, these tools were ignored by the main research paradigms in decision making, such as Tversky and Kahneman's biased rationality approach (also known as the heuristics and biases approach) and the ecological approach advanced by Gigerenzer and others. We make a proposal of how to integrate Simon's approach with the main current approaches to decision making. We argue that this would lead to better models of decision making that are more generalizable, have higher ecological validity, include specification of cognitive processes, and provide a better understanding of the interaction between the characteristics of the cognitive system and the contingencies of the environment
Identification of the novel KI polyomavirus in paranasal and lung tissues
KI is a novel polyomavirus identified in the respiratory secretions of children with acute respiratory symptoms. Whether this reflects a causal role of the virus in the human respiratory disease remains to be established. To investigate the presence of KIV in the respiratory tissue, we examined 20 fresh lung cancer specimens and surrounding normal tissue along with one paranasal and one lung biopsy from two transplanted children. KIV-VP1 gene was detected in 9/20 lung cancer patients and 2/2 transplanted patients. However, amplification of the sequence coding for the C-terminal part of the early region of KIV performed on the 11 positive cases was successful only in two malignant lung tissues, one surrounding normal tissue, and 1/2 biopsies tested. Phylogenetic analysis performed on the early region of KIV (including the four Italian isolates), BKV and JCV revealed the presence of three distinct clades. Within the KIV clade two sub-clades were observed. A sub-clade A containing the four Italian strains, and a sub-clade B comprising the Swedish and Australian isolates. Interestingly, the two Italian strains identified in normal tissue clustered together, whereas those detected in malignant tissue fell outside this cluster. Effectiveness of inactivated influenza vaccines in preventing influenza-associated deaths and hospitalizations among Ontario residents aged ≥ 65 years: estimates with generalized linear models accounting for healthy vaccinee effects.
BACKGROUND: Estimates of the effectiveness of influenza vaccines in older adults may be biased because of difficulties identifying and adjusting for confounders of the vaccine-outcome association. We estimated vaccine effectiveness for prevention of serious influenza complications among older persons by using methods to account for underlying differences in risk for these complications. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study among Ontario residents aged ≥ 65 years from September 1993 through September 2008. We linked weekly vaccination, hospitalization, and death records for 1.4 million community-dwelling persons aged ≥ 65 years. Vaccine effectiveness was estimated by comparing ratios of outcome rates during weeks of high versus low influenza activity (defined by viral surveillance data) among vaccinated and unvaccinated subjects by using log-linear regression models that accounted for temperature and time trends with natural spline functions. Effectiveness was estimated for three influenza-associated outcomes: all-cause deaths, deaths occurring within 30 days of pneumonia/influenza hospitalizations, and pneumonia/influenza hospitalizations. RESULTS: During weeks when 5% of respiratory specimens tested positive for influenza A, vaccine effectiveness among persons aged ≥ 65 years was 22% (95% confidence interval [CI], -6%-42%) for all influenza-associated deaths, 25% (95% CI, 13%-37%) for deaths occurring within 30 days after an influenza-associated pneumonia/influenza hospitalization, and 19% (95% CI, 4%-31%) for influenza-associated pneumonia/influenza hospitalizations. Because small proportions of deaths, deaths after pneumonia/influenza hospitalizations, and pneumonia/influenza hospitalizations were associated with influenza virus circulation, we estimated that vaccination prevented 1.6%, 4.8%, and 4.1% of these outcomes, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: By using confounding-reducing techniques with 15 years of provincial-level data including vaccination and health outcomes, we estimated that influenza vaccination prevented ~4% of influenza-associated hospitalizations and deaths occurring after hospitalizations among older adults in Ontario
