B-57B gust gradient program
Analysis of data obtained from the Joint Airport Weather Studies Flights 6 and 7 is underway. Data from Flight 7 indicate that the B-57B encountered the upper portion of an outflow feature (microburst) at an altitude of 400 meters above ground level. Horizontal wind vector plots along the flight path have provided clues concerning the meteorological setting of the flights. In addition to suspected outflow features, wavelike variations of the horizontal wind vectors were observed. Statistical studies of gust gradients were undertaken with the goal of fitting probability density functions to the data. As expected, the density functions were highly non-Gaussian. Spectral analyses are proceeding and several spectral models for the gust gradient data are being investigated

Magnetic Excitations of Stripes and Checkerboards in the Cuprates
We discuss the magnetic excitations of well-ordered stripe and checkerboard
phases, including the high energy magnetic excitations of recent interest and
possible connections to the "resonance peak" in cuprate superconductors. Using
a suitably parametrized Heisenberg model and spin wave theory, we study a
variety of magnetically ordered configurations, including vertical and diagonal
site- and bond-centered stripes and simple checkerboards. We calculate the
expected neutron scattering intensities as a function of energy and momentum.
At zero frequency, the satellite peaks of even square-wave stripes are
suppressed by as much as a factor of 34 below the intensity of the main
incommensurate peaks. We further find that at low energy, spin wave cones may
not always be resolvable experimentally. Rather, the intensity as a function of
position around the cone depends strongly on the coupling across the stripe
domain walls. At intermediate energy, we find a saddlepoint at for
a range of couplings, and discuss its possible connection to the "resonance
peak" observed in neutron scattering experiments on cuprate superconductors. At
high energy, various structures are possible as a function of coupling strength
and configuration, including a high energy square-shaped continuum originally
attributed to the quantum excitations of spin ladders. On the other hand, we
find that simple checkerboard patterns are inconsistent with experimental

Magnetic Excitations of Stripes Near a Quantum Critical Point
We calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of spin waves for weakly
coupled stripes. At low energy, the spin wave cone intensity is strongly peaked
on the inner branches. As energy is increased, there is a saddlepoint followed
by a square-shaped continuum rotated 45 degree from the low energy peaks. This
is reminiscent of recent high energy neutron scattering data on the cuprates.
The similarity at high energy between this semiclassical treatment and quantum
fluctuations in spin ladders may be attributed to the proximity of a quantum

Superflux I, II, and III experiment design: Remote sensing aspects
The Chesapeake Bay plume study called Superflux is described. The study was initiated to incorporate the disciplines of both resources management and remote sensing in accomplishing the following objectives: (1) process oriented research to understand the impact of estuarine outflows on continental shelf ecosystems; (2) monitoring and assessment to delineate the role of remote sensing in future monitoring and assessment programs; and (3) remote sensing research: to advance the state of the art in remote sensing systems as applied to sensing of the marine environment, thereby hastening the day when remote sensing can be used operationally for monitoring and assessment and for process oriented research
Low-level gust gradient program and avialtion workshop effort
The Proceedings of the Workshop on Meteorological and Environmental Inputs to Aviation Systems, hosted by the University of Tennessee Space Institute, October 26-28, 1982, were prepared for publication. The Proceedings were submitted to FAA and will be distributed by August. Also, the proceedings of a one day workshop devoted specifically to wind shear and hosted during the same time frame were prepared and distributed. Plans for the 1983 workshop are proceeding extremely well. The workshop theme was established, the committee topics identified, and all ten committee chairmen contacted have agreed to accept their respective assignments. Additional logistics for the workshop are being carried out. The 1983 workshop is scheduled for October 26-28, 1983. Data gathered with the B-57B during the Joint Airport Weather Studies Project in Denver, Colorado, were analyzed. All runs for Flight 6 on July 16, 1982, were analyzed. Spectra, cross spectra and probability distributions were computed for each run. Also, Runs 10-14 of Flight 7 on July 15, 1982, were analyzed in similar detail
Bilateral symmetry across Aphrodite Terra
There are three main highland areas on Venus: Beta Regio, Ishtar Terra and Aphrodite Terra. The latter is least known and the least mapped, yet existing analyses of Aphrodite Terra based on available Pioneer-Venus orbiter data suggest that it may be the site of extensive rifting. Some of the highest resolution (30 km) PV data (SAR) included most of the western half of Aphrodite Terra. Recent analysis of the SAR data together with Arecibo range-doppler topographic profiling (10 X 100 km horizontal and 10 m vertical resolution) across parts of Aphrodite, further characterized the nature of possible tectonic processes in the equatorial highlands. The existence of distinct topographic and radar morphologic linear discontinuities across the nearly east-west strike of Aphrodite Terra is indicated. Another prominent set of linear features is distinctly parallel to and orthogonal to the ground tracks of the PV spacecraft and are not included because of the possibility that they are artifacts. Study of the northwest trending cross-strike discontinuities (CSD's) and the nature of topographic and morphologic features along their strike suggest the presence of bilateral topographic and morphologic symmetry about the long axis of Aphrodite Terra
