    Glassiness and constrained dynamics of a short-range non-disordered spin model

    We study the low temperature dynamics of a two dimensional short-range spin system with uniform ferromagnetic interactions, which displays glassiness at low temperatures despite the absence of disorder or frustration. The model has a dual description in terms of free defects subject to dynamical constraints, and is an explicit realization of the ``hierarchically constrained dynamics'' scenario for glassy systems. We give a number of exact results for the statics of the model, and study in detail the dynamical behaviour of one-time and two-time quantities.     Factors contributing to the time taken to consult with symptoms of lung cancer: a cross-sectional study

    <b>Objectives</b>: To determine what factors are associated with the time people take to consult with symptoms of lung cancer, with a focus on those from rural and socially deprived areas. <b>Methods</b>: A cross-sectional quantitative interview survey was performed of 360 patients with newly diagnosed primary lung cancer in three Scottish hospitals (two in Glasgow, one in NE Scotland). Supplementary data were obtained from medical case notes. The main outcome measures were the number of days from (1) the date participant defined first symptom until date of presentation to a medical practitioner; and (2) the date of earliest symptom from a symptom checklist (derived from clinical guidelines) until date of presentation to a medical practitioner. <b>Results</b>: 179 participants (50%) had symptoms for more than 14 weeks before presenting to a medical practitioner (median 99 days; interquartile range 31–381). 270 participants (75%) had unrecognised symptoms of lung cancer. There were no significant differences in time taken to consult with symptoms of lung cancer between rural and/or deprived participants compared with urban and/or affluent participants. Factors independently associated with increased time before consulting about symptoms were living alone, a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and longer pack years of smoking. Haemoptysis, new onset of shortness of breath, cough and loss of appetite were significantly associated with earlier consulting, as were a history of chest infection and renal failure. <b>Conclusion</b>: For many people with lung cancer, regardless of location and socioeconomic status, the time between symptom onset and consultation was long enough to plausibly affect prognosis. Long-term smokers, those with COPD and/or those living alone are at particular risk of taking longer to consult with symptoms of lung cancer and practitioners should be alert to this

    Building an apparatus for ultracold lithium-potassium Fermi-Fermi mixtures

I also constructed the vacuum system for the experiment and experimentally tested a new method to coat the chamber with a Titanium-Zirconium- Vanadium alloy that acts as a pump. The final apparatus will use a 2D Magneto- Optical Trap (MOT) as a source of cool potassium and a Zeeman slower as a source of cool lithium. The atoms will then be trapped and cooled together in a double-species 3D MOT. In the 3D MOT, we will perform photoassociation spectroscopy on the atoms to determine the Li-K molecular energies and collisional properties. Using this information, we can transfer weakly-bound Feshbach LiK molecules into their ground state. LiK has an electric dipole moment and will open the door to the study of novel materials with very long-range interactions.     Automated pancreatic islet viability assessment for transplantation using bright-field deep morphological signature

    Islets transplanted for type-1 diabetes have their viability reduced by warm ischemia, dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG; hypoxia model), oxidative stress and cytokine injury. This results in frequent transplant failures and the major burden of patients having to undergo multiple rounds of treatment for insulin independence. Presently there is no reliable measure to assess islet preparation viability prior to clinical transplantation. We investigated deep morphological signatures (DMS) for detecting the exposure of islets to viability compromising insults from brightfield images. Accuracies ranged from 98 % to 68 % for; ROS damage, pro-inflammatory cytokines, warm ischemia and DMOG. When islets were disaggregated to single cells to enable higher throughput data collection, good accuracy was still obtained (83-71 %). Encapsulation of islets reduced accuracy for cytokine exposure, but it was still high (78 %). Unsupervised modelling of the DMS for islet preparations transplanted into a syngeneic mouse model was able to predict whether or not they would restore glucose control with 100 % accuracy. Our strategy for constructing DMS' is effective for the assessment of islet pre-transplant viability. If translated into the clinic, standard equipment could be used to prospectively identify non-functional islet preparations unable to contribute to the restoration of glucose control and reduce the burden of unsuccessful treatments.Abbas Habibalahi, Jared M.     Interesting magnetic properties of Fe1x_{1-x}Cox_xSi alloys

    Solid solution between nonmagnetic narrow gap semiconductor FeSi and diamagnetic semi-metal CoSi gives rise to interesting metallic alloys with long-range helical magnetic ordering, for a wide range of intermediate concentration. We report various interesting magnetic properties of these alloys, including low temperature re-entrant spin-glass like behaviour and a novel inverted magnetic hysteresis loop. Role of Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction in the magnetic response of these non-centrosymmetric alloys is discussed.Comment: 11 pages and 3 figure

    Pancreatic Islet Viability Assessment Using Hyperspectral Imaging of Autofluorescence

    Islets prepared for transplantation into type 1 diabetes patients are exposed to compromising intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to early graft failure, necessitating repeated islet infusions for clinical insulin independence. A lack of reliable pre-transplant measures to determine islet viability severely limits the success of islet transplantation and will limit future beta cell replacement strategies. We applied hyperspectral fluorescent microscopy to determine whether we could non-invasively detect islet damage induced by oxidative stress, hypoxia, cytokine injury, and warm ischaemia, and so predict transplant outcomes in a mouse model. In assessing islet spectral signals for NAD(P)H, flavins, collagen-I, and cytochrome-C in intact islets, we distinguished islets compromised by oxidative stress (ROS) (AUC = 1.00), hypoxia (AUC = 0.69), cytokine exposure (AUC = 0.94), and warm ischaemia (AUC = 0.94) compared to islets harvested from pristine anaesthetised heart-beating mouse donors. Significantly, with unsupervised assessment we defined an autofluorescent score for ischaemic islets that accurately predicted the restoration of glucose control in diabetic recipients following transplantation. Similar results were obtained for islet single cell suspensions, suggesting translational utility in the context of emerging beta cell replacement strategies. These data show that the pre-transplant hyperspectral imaging of islet autofluorescence has promise for predicting islet viability and transplant success.Jared M. Campbell, Stacey N.     A nonlinear hydrodynamical approach to granular materials

    We propose a nonlinear hydrodynamical model of granular materials.
