Twin-spool turbopumps for ''low'' net positive suction pressure operations
Modified single-shaft turbopump incorporates inducer and main pump, each separately driven at different speeds through coaxial-shaft arrangement. Inducer operates at low speed for low net positive suction pressure, main pump operates at high speed to generate high pressure. This arrangement requires no external control for the inducer
Existence of multi-site intrinsic localized modes in one-dimensional Debye crystals
The existence of highly localized multi-site oscillatory structures (discrete
multibreathers) in a nonlinear Klein-Gordon chain which is characterized by an
inverse dispersion law is proven and their linear stability is investigated.
The results are applied in the description of vertical (transverse, off-plane)
dust grain motion in dusty plasma crystals, by taking into account the lattice
discreteness and the sheath electric and/or magnetic field nonlinearity.
Explicit values from experimental plasma discharge experiments are considered.
The possibility for the occurrence of multibreathers associated with vertical
charged dust grain motion in strongly-coupled dusty plasmas (dust crystals) is
thus established. From a fundamental point of view, this study aims at
providing a first rigorous investigation of the existence of intrinsic
localized modes in Debye crystals and/or dusty plasma crystals and, in fact,
suggesting those lattices as model systems for the study of fundamental crystal
properties.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, revtex forma

Kink-antikink interactions in the double sine-Gordon equation and the problem of resonance frequencies
We studied the kink-antikink collision process for the "double sine-Gordon"
(DSG) equation in 1+1 dimensions at different values of the potential parameter
. For small values of we discuss the problem of resonance frequencies.
We give qualitative explanation of the frequency shift in comparison with the
frequency of the discrete level in the potential well of isolated kink. We show
that in this region of the parameter the effective long-range interaction
between kink and antikink takes place.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, 4 figures (eps
A rapidly expanding Bose-Einstein condensate: an expanding universe in the lab
We study the dynamics of a supersonically expanding ring-shaped Bose-Einstein
condensate both experimentally and theoretically. The expansion redshifts
long-wavelength excitations, as in an expanding universe. After expansion,
energy in the radial mode leads to the production of bulk topological
excitations -- solitons and vortices -- driving the production of a large
number of azimuthal phonons and, at late times, causing stochastic persistent
currents. These complex nonlinear dynamics, fueled by the energy stored
coherently in one mode, are reminiscent of a type of "preheating" that may have
taken place at the end of inflation.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
An exact self-similar solution for an expanding ball of radiation
We give an exact solution of the Einstein equations which in 4D can be
interpreted as a spherically symmetric dissipative distribution of matter, with
heat flux, whose effective density and pressure are nonstatic, nonuniform, and
satisfy the equation of state of radiation. The matter satisfies the usual
energy and thermodynamic conditions. The energy density and temperature are
related by the Stefan-Boltzmann law. The solution admits a homothetic Killing
vector in , which induces the existence of self-similar symmetry in 4D,
where the line element as well as the dimensionless matter quantities are
invariant under a simple "scaling" group.Comment: New version expanded and improved. To appear in Int. J. Mod. Phys.
