    A Trapped Field of 17.6 T in Melt-Processed, Bulk Gd-Ba-Cu-O Reinforced with Shrink-Fit Steel

    The ability of large grain, REBa2_{2}Cu3_{3}O7−ή_{7-\delta} [(RE)BCO; RE = rare earth] bulk superconductors to trap magnetic field is determined by their critical current. With high trapped fields, however, bulk samples are subject to a relatively large Lorentz force, and their performance is limited primarily by their tensile strength. Consequently, sample reinforcement is the key to performance improvement in these technologically important materials. In this work, we report a trapped field of 17.6 T, the largest reported to date, in a stack of two, silver-doped GdBCO superconducting bulk samples, each of diameter 25 mm, fabricated by top-seeded melt growth (TSMG) and reinforced with shrink-fit stainless steel. This sample preparation technique has the advantage of being relatively straightforward and inexpensive to implement and offers the prospect of easy access to portable, high magnetic fields without any requirement for a sustaining current source.Comment: Updated submission to reflect licence change to CC-BY.     Self-field effects upon the critical current density of flat superconducting strips

    We develop a general theory to account self-consistently for self-field effects upon the average transport critical current density Jc of a flat type-II superconducting strip in the mixed state when the bulk pinning is characterized by a field-dependent depinning critical current density Jp(B), where B is the local magnetic flux density. We first consider the possibility of both bulk and edge-pinning contributions but conclude that bulk pinning dominates over geometrical edge-barrier effects in state-of-the-art YBCO films and prototype second-generation coated conductors. We apply our theory using the Kim model, JpK(B) = JpK(0)/(1+|B|/B0), as an example. We calculate Jc(Ba) as a function of a perpendicular applied magnetic induction Ba and show how Jc(Ba) is related to JpK(B). We find that Jc(Ba) is very nearly equal to JpK(Ba) when Ba > Ba*, where Ba* is the value of Ba that makes the net flux density zero at the strip's edge. However, Jc(Ba) is suppressed relative to JpK(Ba) at low fields when Ba < Ba*, with the largest suppression occurring when Ba*/B0 is of order unity or larger.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, minor revisions to add four reference

    Evidence for Non-Anadromous Behaviour of Arctic Charr (Salvelinus alpinus) from Lake Hazen, Ellesmere Island, Northwest Territories, Canada, Based on Scanning Proton Microprobe Analysis of Otolith Strontium Distribution

    Scanning proton microprobe analysis was used to determine the distribution of strontium (Sr) in otoliths from arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) of known non-anadromous, known anadromous, and unknown life histories. Strontium concentration patterns in otoliths of known non-anadromous charr were low and relatively flat (with little variation) from the core area to the outermost edge of the otolith, while patterns for known anadromous charr were characterized by a similar low, flat region for the first several years of life, followed by marked oscillatory increases and decreases in Sr content for the duration of the fish's life. Small and large forms of Lake Hazen charr of unknown life histories exhibited Sr profiles that were similar to those of the known non-anadromous charr, which strongly suggest that Lake Hazen charr are non-anadromous. These results indicate that Lake Hazen is a "closed" system with energy cycling primarily within the system; this conclusion suggests that a conservative approach would be appropriate for the management of the Lake Hazen charr population.À l'aide d'une sonde protonique Ă  balayage, on a procĂ©dĂ© Ă  une analyse afin de dĂ©terminer la rĂ©partition du strontium (Sr) dans des otolithes prĂ©levĂ©s sur des ombles chevaliers (Salvelinus alpinus) ayant eu soit un cycle biologique non anadrome connu, soit un cycle anadrome connu ou un cycle inconnu.     Rookies Connected: Interpersonal Relationships Among Newcomers, Newcomer Adjustment Processes, and Socialization Outcomes

    How do relationships among newcomers in the same cohort impact how quickly they develop clear understandings of their new roles and, ultimately, key socialization outcomes? We study newcomers\u27 relationships with cohort members in the same unit (i.e., intra-unit relationships) and those in different units (i.e., inter-unit relationships). While organizations invest substantial time and resources in promoting broad networking among newcomers, we offer a theoretical and empirical account of how too many connections among fellow newcomers early in the socialization process can slow their adjustment-namely, their growth in role clarity. In Study 1, we surveyed 189 newcomers in an international conglomerate from their orientations through their first 4 months and linked responses to 3 years of their job performance and turnover records. After controlling for the initial level of role clarity, we found an inverted U-shaped relationship between newcomers\u27 intra-unit peer connections and growth in role clarity, whereas their inter-unit peer connections did not significantly relate to growth in role clarity. Growth in role clarity positively related to subsequent newcomers\u27 job satisfaction and job performance, which were then negatively related to turnover. Study 2\u27s results indicated that sensemaking with fellow newcomers operated as a key mechanism linking the nonlinear relationships between intra-unit newcomer-newcomer relationships and growth in role clarity.     Evaluating the spatial transferability and temporal repeatability of remote sensing-based lake water quality retrieval algorithms at the European scale:a meta-analysis approach

    Many studies have shown the considerable potential for the application of remote-sensing-based methods for deriving estimates of lake water quality. However, the reliable application of these methods across time and space is complicated by the diversity of lake types, sensor configuration, and the multitude of different algorithms proposed. This study tested one operational and 46 empirical algorithms sourced from the peer-reviewed literature that have individually shown potential for estimating lake water quality properties in the form of chlorophyll-a (algal biomass) and Secchi disc depth (SDD) (water transparency) in independent studies. Nearly half (19) of the algorithms were unsuitable for use with the remote-sensing data available for this study. The remaining 28 were assessed using the Terra/Aqua satellite archive to identify the best performing algorithms in terms of accuracy and transferability within the period 2001–2004 in four test lakes, namely VĂ€nern, VĂ€ttern, Geneva, and Balaton. These lakes represent the broad continuum of large European lake types, varying in terms of eco-region (latitude/longitude and altitude), morphology, mixing regime, and trophic status. All algorithms were tested for each lake separately and combined to assess the degree of their applicability in ecologically different sites. None of the algorithms assessed in this study exhibited promise when all four lakes were combined into a single data set and most algorithms performed poorly even for specific lake types. A chlorophyll-a retrieval algorithm originally developed for eutrophic lakes showed the most promising results (R2 = 0.59) in oligotrophic lakes. Two SDD retrieval algorithms, one originally developed for turbid lakes and the other for lakes with various characteristics, exhibited promising results in relatively less turbid lakes (R2 = 0.62 and 0.76, respectively). The results presented here highlight the complexity associated with remotely sensed lake water quality estimates and the high degree of uncertainty due to various limitations, including the lake water optical properties and the choice of methods

    Accretion disc-stellar magnetosphere interaction: field line inflation and the effect on the spin-down torque

    We calculate the structure of a force-free magnetosphere which is assumed to corotate with a central star and which interacts with an embedded differentially rotating accretion disc. The magnetic and rotation axes are aligned and the stellar field is assumed to be a dipole. We concentrate on the case when the amount of field line twisting through the disc-magnetosphere interaction is large and consider different outer boundary conditions. In general the field line twisting produces field line inflation (eg. Bardou & Heyvaerts 1996) and in some cases with large twisting many field lines can become open. We calculate the spin-down torque acting between the star and the disc and we find that it decreases significantly for cases with large field line twisting. This suggests that the oscillating torques observed for some accreting neutron stars could be due to the magnetosphere varying between states with low and high field line inflation. Calculations of the spin evolution of T Tauri stars may also have to be revised in light of the significant effect that field line twisting has on the magnetic torque resulting from star-disc interactions.Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 21 pages, 15 figures.     Sports mega-events – three sites of contemporary political contestation

    This article discusses the contemporary politics of sports mega-events, involving the Olympic Games and FĂ©dĂ©ration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) Men’s Football World Cup Finals as well as other lower ‘order’ sports megas, taking two main forms: the promotional and the protest. There is a politics in, and a politics of, sports mega-events. The former focuses on the internal politics of the organizing bodies, such as the International Olympic Committee and FIFA. This form of politics has been written about elsewhere, and hence, there is no detailed discussion in this article about it. Instead this article offers a brief discussion of the range and number of sports mega-events since 2000, an assessment of the contemporary politics of sports mega-events, a focus on three main sites of political contestation – rights, legacy and labour, and finally, it offers conclusions about research into the politics of sports mega-events

    T-Violation in K+→Ό+ÎœÎłK^+ \to \mu^+ \nu \gamma Decay And Supersymmetry

    Measurement of the transverse muon polarization PΌ⊄P^{\bot}_{\mu} in the K+→Ό+ÎœÎłK^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu\gamma decay will be attempted for the first time at the ongoing KEK E246 experiment and also at a proposed BNL experiment. We provide a general analysis of how PΌ⊄P^{\bot}_{\mu} is sensitive to the physical CPCP-violating phases in new physics induced four-Fermi interactions, and then we calculate the dominant contributions to PΌ⊄P^{\bot}_{\mu} from squark family mixings in generic supersymmetric models. Estimates of the upper bounds on PΌ⊄P^{\bot}_{\mu} are also given. It is found that a supersymmetry-induced right-handed quark current from WW boson exchange gives an upper limit on PΌ⊄P^{\bot}_{\mu} as large as a few per cent, whereas with charged-Higgs-exchange induced pseudoscalar interaction, PΌ⊄P^{\bot}_{\mu} is no larger than a few tenths of a per cent. Possible correlations between the muon polarization measurements in K+→Ό+ÎœÎłK^+ \rightarrow \mu^+\nu\gamma and K+→π0ÎŒ+ÎœK^+ \rightarrow \pi^0\mu^+\nu decays are discussed, and distinctive patterns of this correlation from squark family-mixings and from the three-Higgs-doublet model are noted.Comment: Revtex, 29 pages including 4 epsf figure

    Spherical Curvature Inhomogeneities in String Cosmology

    We study the evolution of non-linear spherically symmetric inhomogeneities in string cosmology. Friedmann solutions of different spatial curvature are matched to produce solutions which describe the evolution of non-linear density and curvature inhomogeneities. The evolution of bound and unbound inhomogeneities are studied. The problem of primordial black hole formation is discussed in the string cosmological context and the pattern of evolution is determined in the pre- and post-big-bang phases of evolution.Comment: 19 pages, Latex, 4 figure
