    Radiant source tracker independent of nonconstant irradiance

    A tracker of a radiant source is disclosed. The tracker is composed of a sectored matrix of detectors whose output voltages correspond to their respective levels of irradiance. The voltages are each sampled during a variable length period and the resulting samples are shaped into triangular samples by an integration process. They are supplied to a demodulator which provides an output corresponding to the difference of the time-voltage product of appropriate combinations of the samples. This output, after filtering, represents the angle of incidence on the detectors with respect to a central axis. The triangular samples are also supplied to a demodulator whose output is an AGC voltage which is a function of the sum of the time-voltage integrals of the triangular samples

    Supersymmetry and Supercoherent States of a Nonrelativistic Free Particle

    Coordinate atypical representation of the orthosymplectic superalgebra osp(2/2) in a Hilbert superspace of square integrable functions constructed in a special way is given. The quantum nonrelativistic free particle Hamiltonian is an element of this superalgebra which turns out to be a dynamical superalgebra for this system. The supercoherent states, defined by means of a supergroup displacement operator, are explicitly constructed. These are the coordinate representation of the known atypical abstract super group OSp(2/2)OSp(2/2) coherent states. We interpret obtained results from the classical mechanics viewpoint as a model of classical particle which is immovable in the even sector of the phase superspace and is in rectilinear movement (in the appropriate coordinate system) in its odd sector

    QCD corrections to J/psi and Upsilon production at hadron colliders

    We calculate the cross section for hadroproduction of a pair of heavy quarks in a 3S1 color-singlet state at next-to-leading order in QCD. This corresponds to the leading contribution in the NRQCD expansion for J/psi and Upsilon production. The higher-order corrections have a large impact on the p_T distributions, enhancing the production at high p_T both at the Tevatron and at the LHC. The total decay rate of a 3S1 into hadrons at NLO is also computed, confirming for the first time the result obtained by Mackenzie and Lepage in 1981.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Australian Vessel Performance in the East Coast Tuna Longline Fishery

    A sample of daily observations on the activities of Australian vessels longlining for yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, during 1987-90 was analyzed, using a production junction approach, to determine the effects of vessel characteristics and operational practices and conditions. Significant differences were found between the tuna fisheries in the northern and southern regions of the inshore yellowfin tuna fishery in the east Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. The type of vessel used, and fishing practices such as soaktime, patrolling the longline, and choice of surface water temperature were found to have significant effects on yellowfin tuna catch rates

    Leading-edge vortex research: Some nonplanar concepts and current challenges

    Some background information is provided for the Vortex Flow Aerodynamics Conference and that current slender wing airplanes do not use variable leading edge geometry to improve transonic drag polar is shown. Highlights of some of the initial studies combining wing camber, or flaps, with vortex flow are presented. Current vortex flap studies were reviewed to show that there is a large subsonic data base and that transonic and supersonic generic studies have begun. There is a need for validated flow field solvers to calculate vortex/shock interactions at transonic and supersonic speeds. Many important research opportunities exist for fundamental vortex flow investigations and for designing advanced fighter concepts

    Forestry Economics: Principles and Practice

    This review discusses bioeconomic models of the forest and uses them to explore policy options for forest management. The main type of bioeconomic model used is based on a biomass model of the growth of the forest, similar to the biomass model widely used in fishery economics. However a more detailed model, similar to the cohort-based models of fish stocks, which simulates the growth of subsections of the forest is also referred to. The bioeconomic models are based on simple assumptions about prices and costs - mainly that the forest industry, as a small part of the economy, is a price taker in both output and input markets. The models were initially used to examine the harvesting policy which would maximise the net present value of the timber produced by the forest. However it was recognised that non-timber values are becoming increasingly important and must be accounted for in the development of an optimal forest strategy. Case Studies consider some of the issues raised in the paper in greater detail.

    The Impact of Elementary Mathematics Specialists

    Elementary Mathematics Specialists are placed in schools to construct leadership roles and to provide on-site professional development addressing mathematical content and pedagogy in order to enhance instruction and to improve student achievement. A three-year, randomized, control study found that, over time, Specialists had a significant positive impact on student achievement in Grades 3, 4, and 5. This effect on student achievement was not evident at the conclusion of the Specialist\u27s first year of placement. It emerged as knowledgeable Specialists gained experience and as the schools\u27 instructional and administrative staffs learned and worked together. Specialists who were highly engaged with a teacher significantly impacted those teachers\u27 beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning. In addition addition, teachers in schools with a Specialist were more likely to participate in a non-coaching professional activity (attending mathematics-focused grade-level meetings, observing peers\u27 teaching, or attending schoolwide mathematics workshops). The Specialists in this study had substantial programmatic responsibilities that influenced their amount of available time for coaching teachers. Further, the Specialists in this study engaged in a high degree of professional coursework prior to and during at least their first year of placement. Findings should not be generalized to Mathematics Specialists or coaches with less expertise

    Shaping Pre-Service Teachers\u27 Attitudes: An Inquiry Approach to Course Reform

    The purpose of the study was to investigate the development of pre-service teachers’ attitudes toward teaching science with inquiry methods as the result of their participation in the two-hour elementary science methods class. Southwestern Oklahoma State University is a partner in the Oklahoma Teacher Education Collaborative (OTEC) which is funded by the National Science Foundation’s reform effort, Collaboratives for Excellence in Teacher Preparation (CETP). The reform effort focuses on the revision of the teacher preparation courses with emphasis on a systemic change in the method in which math, science, and education methods courses are taught across Oklahoma. Nine Oklahoma universities, including the University of Tulsa, Oklahoma State University, the University of Central Oklahoma, Northeastern Oklahoma State University, Cameron University, Langston University, Tulsa Community College and Southwestern Oklahoma State University, have focused on revising the identified courses with inquiry-based instruction
