Australian Vessel Performance in the East Coast Tuna Longline Fishery
A sample of daily observations on the activities of Australian vessels longlining for yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, during 1987-90 was analyzed, using a production junction approach, to determine the effects of vessel characteristics and operational practices and conditions. Significant differences were found between the tuna fisheries in the northern and southern regions of the inshore yellowfin tuna fishery in the east Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. The type of vessel used, and fishing practices such as soaktime, patrolling the longline, and choice of surface water temperature were found to have significant effects on yellowfin tuna catch rates
An NPZ Model with State-Dependent Delay due to Size-Structure in Juvenile Zooplankton
The study of planktonic ecosystems is important as they make up the bottom
trophic levels of aquatic food webs. We study a closed
Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton (NPZ) model that includes size structure in
the juvenile zooplankton. The closed nature of the system allows the
formulation of a conservation law of biomass that governs the system. The model
consists of a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equation coupled to a
partial differential equation. We are able to transform this system into a
system of delay differential equations where the delay is of threshold type and
is state-dependent. The system of delay differential equations can be further
transformed into one with fixed delay. Using the different forms of the model
we perform a qualitative analysis of the solutions, which includes studying
existence and uniqueness, positivity and boundedness, local and global
stability, and conditions for extinction. Key parameters that are explored are
the total biomass in the system and the maturity level at which the juvenile
zooplankton reach maturity. Numerical simulations are also performed to verify
our analytical results
Experimental wake survey behind Viking 75 entry vehicle at angles of attack of 0 deg, 5 deg, and 10 deg, Mach numbers from 0.20 to 1.20, and longitudinal stations from 1.50 to 11.00 body diameters
An investigation was conducted to obtain flow properties in the wake of a preliminary configuration of the Viking '75 Entry Vehicle at Mach numbers from 0.20 to 1.20 and at angles of attack of 0 deg, 5 deg, and 10 deg. The wake flow properties were calculated from total and static pressures measured with a pressure rake at longitudinal stations varying from 1.50 to 11.00 body diameters, and are presented in tabulated and plotted form. The wake properties were essentially symmetrical about the X-axis at alpha = 0 deg and the profiles were shifted away from the X-axis at angles of attack. An unexpected reduction in wake property ratios occurred as the Mach number increased from 0.60 to 1.00; these ratios then increased as the Mach number increased to 1.20. The reduction was present for all the longitudinal stations of the tests and decreased with increased longitudinal distance
Some neutron and gamma radiation characteristics of plutonium cermet fuel for isotopic power sources
Gamma and neutron measurements on various types of plutonium sources are presented in order to show the effects of O-17, O-18 F-19, Pu-236, age of the fuel, and size of the source on the gamma and neutron spectra. Analysis of the radiation measurements shows that fluorine is the main contributor to the neutron yields from present plutonium-molybdenum cermet fuel, while both fluorine and Pu-236 daughters contribute significantly to the gamma ray intensities

A Low Cost Remote Sensing System Using PC and Stereo Equipment
A system using a personal computer, speaker, and a microphone is used to
detect objects, and make crude measurements using a carrier modulated by a
pseudorandom noise (PN) code. This system can be constructed using a personal
computer and audio equipment commonly found in the laboratory or at home, or
more sophisticated equipment that can be purchased at reasonable cost. We
demonstrate its value as an instructional tool for teaching concepts of remote

A tale of one city: intra-institutional variations in migrating VLE platform
City University London committed in 2009 to make Moodle the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) at the core of a new Strategic Learning Environment (SLE) comprised of VLE, externally facing website and related systems such as video streaming and virtual classrooms. Previously, the WebCT VLE had been separate from most of the other systems at the institution with very limited connections to other tools. Each of the schools within the institution was able to pursue their own strategy and timeframe for the migration and embedding of Moodle within their subject areas, within an absolute limit of 2 years. This paper outlines the approaches taken by the various schools, highlighting similarities and differences, and draws out common aspects from the project to make recommendations for institutions seeking to undertake similar migrations
