Two-dimensional structure in a generic model of triangular proteins and protein trimers
Motivated by the diversity and complexity of two-dimensional crystals formed
by triangular proteins and protein trimers, we have investigated the structures
and phase behavior of hard-disk trimers. In order to mimic specific binding
interactions, each trimer possesses on `attractive' disk which can interact
with similar disks on other trimers via an attractive square-well potential. At
low density and low temperature, the fluid phase mainly consists of tetramers,
pentamers, or hexamers. Hexamers provide the structural motif for a
high-density, low-temperature periodic solid phase, but we also identify a
metastable periodic structure based on a tetramer motif. At high density there
is a transition between orientationally ordered and disordered solid phases.
The connections between simulated structures and those of 2D protein crystals
-- as seen in electron microscopy -- are briefly discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Maxometers (peak wind speed anemometers)
An instrument for measuring peak wind speeds under severe environmental conditions is described, comprising an elongated cylinder housed in an outer casing. The cylinder contains a piston attached to a longitudinally movable guided rod having a pressure disk mounted on one projecting end. Wind pressure against the pressure disk depresses the movable rod. When the wind reaches its maximum speed, the rod is locked by a ball clutch mechanism in the position of maximum inward movement. Thereafter maximum wind speed or pressure readings may be taken from calibrated indexing means
Arm cavity resonant sideband control for laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors
We present a new optical control scheme for a laser interferometric gravitational wave detector that has a high degree of tolerance to interferometer spatial distortions and noise on the input light. The scheme involves resonating the rf sidebands in an interferometer arm cavity
Electromagnetic Chirps from Neutron Star-Black Hole Mergers
We calculate the electromagnetic signal of a gamma-ray flare coming from the
surface of a neutron star shortly before merger with a black hole companion.
Using a new version of the Monte Carlo radiation transport code Pandurata that
incorporates dynamic spacetimes, we integrate photon geodesics from the neutron
star surface until they reach a distant observer or are captured by the black
hole. The gamma-ray light curve is modulated by a number of relativistic
effects, including Doppler beaming and gravitational lensing. Because the
photons originate from the inspiraling neutron star, the light curve closely
resembles the corresponding gravitational waveform: a chirp signal
characterized by a steadily increasing frequency and amplitude. We propose to
search for these electromagnetic chirps using matched filtering algorithms
similar to those used in LIGO data analysis.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Ap
Summary Proceedings of a Wind Shear Workshop
A number of recent program results and current issues were addressed: the data collection phase of the highly successful Joint Airport Weather Study (JAWS) Project and the NASA-B5f7B Gust Gradient Program, the use of these data for flight crew training through educational programs (e.g., films) and with manned flight training simulators, methods for post-accident determination of wind conditions from flight data recorders, the microburst wind shear phenomenon which was positively measured and described the ring vortex as a possible generating mechanism, the optimum flight procedure for use during an unexpected wind shear encounter, evaluation of the low-level wind shear alert system (LLWSAS), and assessment of the demonstrated and viable application of Doppler radar as an operational wind shear warning and detection system
Application of NASTRAN/COSMIC in the analysis of ship structures to underwater explosion shock
The application of NASTRAN/COSMIC in predicting the transient motion of ship structures to underwater, non-contact explosions is discussed. Examples illustrate the finite element models, mathematical formulations of loading functions and, where available, comparisons between analytical and experimental results
Ninja data analysis with a detection pipeline based on the Hilbert-Huang Transform
The Ninja data analysis challenge allowed the study of the sensitivity of
data analysis pipelines to binary black hole numerical relativity waveforms in
simulated Gaussian noise at the design level of the LIGO observatory and the
VIRGO observatory. We analyzed NINJA data with a pipeline based on the Hilbert
Huang Transform, utilizing a detection stage and a characterization stage:
detection is performed by triggering on excess instantaneous power,
characterization is performed by displaying the kernel density enhanced (KD)
time-frequency trace of the signal. Using the simulated data based on the two
LIGO detectors, we were able to detect 77 signals out of 126 above SNR 5 in
coincidence, with 43 missed events characterized by signal to noise ratio SNR
less than 10. Characterization of the detected signals revealed the merger part
of the waveform in high time and frequency resolution, free from time-frequency
uncertainty. We estimated the timelag of the signals between the detectors
based on the optimal overlap of the individual KD time-frequency maps, yielding
estimates accurate within a fraction of a millisecond for half of the events. A
coherent addition of the data sets according to the estimated timelag
eventually was used in a characterization of the event.Comment: Accepted for publication in CQG, special issue NRDA proceedings 200
STEPS - an approach for human mobility modeling
In this paper we introduce Spatio-TEmporal Parametric Stepping (STEPS) - a simple parametric mobility model which can cover a large spectrum of human mobility patterns. STEPS makes abstraction of spatio-temporal preferences in human mobility by using a power law to rule the nodes movement. Nodes in STEPS have preferential attachment to favorite locations where they spend most of their time. Via simulations, we show that STEPS is able, not only to express the peer to peer properties such as inter-ontact/contact time and to reflect accurately realistic routing performance, but also to express the structural properties of the underlying interaction graph such as small-world phenomenon. Moreover, STEPS is easy to implement, exible to configure and also theoretically tractable
Comparison of linkage analysis methods for genome-wide scanning of extended pedigrees, with application to the TG/HDL-C ratio in the Framingham Heart Study
BACKGROUND: High triglycerides (TG) and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) jointly increase coronary disease risk. We performed linkage analysis for TG/HDL-C ratio in the Framingham Heart Study data as a quantitative trait, using methods implemented in LINKAGE, GENEHUNTER (GH), MCLINK, and SOLAR. Results were compared to each other and to those from a previous evaluation using SOLAR for TG/HDL-C ratio on this sample. We also investigated linked pedigrees in each region using by-pedigree analysis. RESULTS: Fourteen regions with at least suggestive linkage evidence were identified, including some that may increase and some that may decrease coronary risk. Ten of the 14 regions were identified by more than one analysis, and several of these regions were not previously detected. The best regions identified for each method were on chromosomes 2 (LOD = 2.29, MCLINK), 5 (LOD = 2.65, GH), 7 (LOD = 2.67, SOLAR), and 22 (LOD = 3.37, LINKAGE). By-pedigree multi-point LOD values in MCLINK showed linked pedigrees for all five regions, ranging from 3 linked pedigrees (chromosome 5) to 14 linked pedigrees (chromosome 7), and suggested localizations of between 9 cM and 27 cM in size. CONCLUSION: Reasonable concordance was found across analysis methods. No single method identified all regions, either by full sample LOD or with by-pedigree analysis. Concordance across methods appeared better at the pedigree level, with many regions showing by-pedigree support in MCLINK when no evidence was observed in the full sample. Thus, investigating by-pedigree linkage evidence may provide a useful tool for evaluating linkage regions
