Constructing women's "different voice": Gendered mediation in the 2015 UK General Election

    Get PDF
Since the 1990s, media commentators in the UK and elsewhere have praised women for introducing a “visibly different style of politics”, one symbol of which is the alleged preference of female politicians for a less adversarial and more co-operative style of political speech. Drawing on an analysis of the 2015 UK General Election campaign, we argue that this notion of women’s “different voice” has become increasingly central to the media’s construction of prominent female politicians as public figures, despite the evidence that it does not reflect any clear-cut pattern of differentiation between male and female political speakers of equivalent status and experience. Though it may seem to be an advance on previous negative representations of female politicians, we suggest that it reproduces—albeit in a “modernized” form—the long-established tendency of the media to evaluate women in relation to gendered norms and expectations, while men are judged as individuals

A general study of Minoan frescoes with particular reference to unpublished wall painting from Knossos

PhD ThesisThis four-part dissertation considers Minoan frescoes in their own right for a first time, with reference to unpublished paintings and nearly fifty new restorations, with a view to providing a new basis for historical reconstruction drawn from that source. Earliest developments begin with Neolithic architectural muse of mud plasters, the first painted plasters occuring in EM II settlements and simple decorative schemes in the First Palaces (1900-1700 B.C.). The sudden rise of pictorial naturalism in MM IIIA is explained by native cultural developments of the First Palace Period, not by foreign influences or "eideticism" which is rejected altogether. A review of the motival repertory leads to considerations of six main "cycles of ideas" whence the painters derived their themes. The most important, confined to Knossos palace, depicts a major festival of grand processions and athletic activities before the chief Minoan goddess, and it illuminates the palatial architechural design. But five different systems of mural decoration characterise Minoan architecture as a whole, with regional and perhaps autonomous variations at Cycadic sites. Technical considerations confirm "buon fresco" as the normal painting technique and distinguish Knossian town house and palace murals in construction and purpose. Similar distinctions in compositional design are also described. A review of eleven "schools" of Knossian painters and of regional artists precedes a detailed reconstruction of the dates of the frescoes on stratigraphical, stylistic and comparative evidence. Sir Arthur Evans's fresco dating should generally be lowered by one Minoan phase. Minoan pictorial painting ceases with the palace destruction at Knossos, c.1375 B.C. Major differences appear between pre- and post-LM IB frescoes, tentatively explained on the evidence of Aegean and Egyption pictorial representations by the arrival at Knossos of a Mycenaean military dynasty, c.1450 B.C. Minoan wall painting finally disappeared in the LM IIIB period

Moving Healthcare Professionals Programme:embedding the promotion of physical activity in healthcare curricula

    Get PDF
The benefits of physical activity to health are widely extolled, particularly in relation to the prevention and management of disease. However, few undergraduate healthcare curricula make space to specifically teach physical activity promotion. The professional standards of accrediting bodies ensure that public health and health promotion are embedded in pre-registration degree programmes but there is no standardised approach to covering physical activity. The national Moving Healthcare Professionals Programme (MHPP) is designed to support UK healthcare professionals and educators to gain knowledge and skills that would enable physical activity to be included within routine care to facilitate better patient outcomes

Shaped nozzles for cryogenic buffer gas beam sources

    Get PDF
Cryogenic buffer gas beams are important sources of cold molecules. In this work we explore the use of a converging-diverging nozzle with a buffer-gas beam. We find that, under appropriate circumstances, the use of a nozzle can produce a beam with improved collimation, lower transverse temperatures, and higher fluxes per solid angle

Ohio Wesleyan Students’ Perceptions of Economic Issues and Inequality

This project attempts to address the political campus climate at Ohio Wesleyan University by assessing associations and attitudes pertaining to Capitalism, Socialism, Democratic Socialism and Communism. Five members of Professor Dean\u27s SOAN 358 class are currently conducting this project by surveying introductory lower 100 level classes at Ohio Wesleyan across departments. Surveying 100 level intro courses was strategic in attempting to broaden survey outreach for statistical significance and accurate representation of the average Ohio Wesleyan student\u27s views on political systems. The research group has already collected over 150 surveys and will continue to collect and record data that will later be analyzed. The goal of this research is to assess the views of Ohio Wesleyan students pertaining to the viability of Democratic Socialism in the U.S. and the differences between the perceived ownership of wealth in the U.S. on Ohio Wesleyan\u27s campus and the actual statistics of wealth ownership and inequality. The research also attempts to reveal the overall knowledge of politics and economic systems throughout the campus. The survey data will be compared across departments by major, race, gender, and level of parental educational background. The group will have collected over 150 surveys before data analysis to meet the Research Symposium presentation date
