    Differential Attention to Attributes in Utility-theoretic Choice Models

    We show in a theoretical model that benefits of allocating additional attention to evaluating the marginal attribute with in choice set depend upon the expected utility loss from making a suboptimal choice as a result of ignoring that incremental attribute. Guided by this analysis, we then develop a very general and practical empirical method for measuring the individual's propensity to attend to attributes. As a proof of concept, we offer an empirical example of our method using a conjoint analysis of demand for programs to reduce health risks. Our results suggest that respondents differentially allocate attention across attributes, as a function of the mix of attribute levels in a choice set. This behavior can cause researchers who fail to model attention allocation to incorrectly estimate the marginal utilities derived from selected attributes.     Reduced-Complexity Maximum-Likelihood Detection in Downlink SDMA Systems

    The literature of up-link SDMA systems is rich, but at the time of writing there is a paucity of information on the employment of SDMA techniques in the down-link. Hence, in this paper a Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) down-link (DL) multi-user communication system invoking a novel low-complexity Maximum Likelihood (ML) space-time detection technique is proposed, which can be regarded as an advanced extension of the Complex Sphere Decoder (CSD). We demonstrate that as opposed to the previously published variants of the CSD, the proposed technique may be employed for obtaining a high effective throughput in the so-called “over-loaded” scenario, where the number of transmit antennas exceeds that of the receive antennas. The proposed method achieves the optimum performance of the ML detector even in heavily over-loaded scenarios, while the associated computational complexity is only moderately increased. As an illustrative example, the required Eb/N0 increased from 2 dB to 9 dB, when increasing the normalized system load from unity, representing the fully loaded system, to a normalized load of 1.556

    Scenario adjustment in stated preference research

    AbstractPoorly designed stated preference (SP) studies are subject to a number of well-known biases, but many of these biases can be minimized when they are anticipated ex ante and accommodated in the study's design or during data analysis. We identify another source of potential bias, which we call “scenario adjustment,” where respondents assume that the substantive alternative(s) in an SP choice set, in their own particular case, will be different from what the survey instrument describes. We use an existing survey, developed to ascertain willingness to pay for private health-risk reduction programs, to demonstrate a strategy to control and correct for scenario adjustment in the estimation of willingness to pay. This strategy involves data from carefully worded follow-up questions, and ex post econometric controls, for each respondent's subjective departures from the intended choice scenario. Our research has important implications for the design of future SP surveys

    Periodic variability of spotted M dwarfs in WTS

    This is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License 2.0, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited.We present an analysis of the photometric variability of M dwarfs in the WFCAM Transit Survey, selected from spectral types inferred by their WTS and SDSS colours, with periods detected using a Lomb-Scargle Periodogram Analisys. We estimate population membership of these objects from their tangential velocities and photometric parralaxes. Examples of M dwarfs with variable light curve morphologuies are found. We discuss possible causes for this and make use of models of spotted stars in our interpretation of the results

    A method for isolating and culturing placental cells from failed early equine pregnancies

    Early pregnancy loss occurs in 6–10% of equine pregnancies making it the main cause of reproductive wastage. Despite this, reasons for the losses are known in only 16% of cases. Lack of viable conceptus material has inhibited investigations of many potential genetic and pathological causes. We present a method for isolating and culturing placental cells from failed early equine pregnancies. Trophoblast cells from 18/30 (60%) failed equine pregnancies of gestational ages 14–65 days were successfully cultured in three different media, with the greatest growth achieved for cells cultured in AmnioChrome™ Plus. Genomic DNA of a suitable quality for molecular assays was also isolated from 29/30 of these cases. This method will enable future investigations determining pathologies causing EPL

    Trunk and lower extremity movement patterns, stress fracture risk factors, and biomarkers of bone turnover in military trainees

    Context: Military service members commonly sustain lower extremity stress fractures (SFx). How SFx risk factors influence bone metabolism is unknown. Understanding how SFx risk factors influence bone metabolism may help to optimize risk-mitigation strategies. Objective: To determine how SFx risk factors influence bone metabolism. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: Military service academy. Patients or Other Participants: Forty-five men (agepre ¼ 18.56 6 1.39 years, heightpre ¼ 176.95 6 7.29 cm, masspre ¼ 77.20 6 9.40 kg; body mass indexpre ¼ 24.68 6 2.87) who completed Cadet Basic Training (CBT). Individuals with neurologic or metabolic disorders were excluded. Intervention(s): We assessed SFx risk factors (independent variables) with (1) the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS), (2) self-reported injury and physical activity questionnaires, and (3) physical fitness tests. We assessed bone biomarkers (dependent variables; procollagen type I amino-terminal propeptide [PINP] and cross-linked collagen telopeptide [CTx-1]) via serum. Main Outcome Measure(s): A markerless motion-capture system was used to analyze trunk and lower extremity biomechanics via the LESS. Serum samples were collected post-CBT; enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays determined PINP and CTx-1 concentrations, and PINP: CTx-1 ratios were calculated. Linear regression models demonstrated associations between SFx risk factors and PINP and CTx-1 concentrations and PINP: CTx-1 ratio. Biomarker concentration mean differences with 95% confidence intervals were calculated. Significance was set a priori using a ≤ .10 for simple and a ≤ .05 for multiple regression analyses. Results: The multiple regression models incorporating LESS and SFx risk factor data predicted the PINP concentration (R2 ¼ 0.47, P ¼ .02) and PINP: CTx-1 ratio (R2 ¼ 0.66, P ¼ .01). The PINP concentration was increased by foot internal rotation, trunk flexion, CBT injury, sit-up score, and pre- to post-CBT mass changes. The CTx-1 concentration was increased by heel-to-toe landing and post-CBT mass. The PINP: CTx-1 ratio was increased by foot internal rotation, lower extremity sagittal-plane displacement (inversely), CBT injury, sit-up score, and pre- to post-CBT mass changes. Conclusions: Stress fracture risk factors accounted for 66% of the PINP: CTx-1 ratio variability, a potential surrogate for bone health. Our findings provide insight into how SFx risk factors influence bone health. This information can help guide SFx risk-mitigation strategies

    A Model for the Reduction of Specific Surface Area of Powders with Age

    PETN is a high explosive, sometimes stored for periods of up to many years, in powdered form. In storage, the explosive particles change size and shape owing to sublimation, condensation and surface di usion. AWE measurements are available on the changing particle size distri- bution (PSD), and the speci c surface area (SSA) of the powder, taken from experiments on accelerated ageing. But a mathematical model of the ageing process is wanted in order to interpret the processes at work. Various modelling issues and unusual features of the measure- ment data were discussed. Four models of important processes were developed, and are reported here. Model (i) addresses the fundamental physics associated with the transport of mass by sublimation, di usion and condensation. Model (ii) uses chemical kinetics to develop a system of ordinary di erential equations (ODEs) for the time-evolution of the frequencies of particle sizes. Model (iii) extends Model (ii) to a contin- uum particle size distribution. Lastly, Model (iv) considers the growth of particles as described by Cahn-Hilliard equations for the inter-particle transport of matter in Ostwald Ripening. Models (i) and (iv) include the complex geometry and thermodynamics of the problem. By con- trast, Models (ii) and (iii) focus on the time evolution of the PSD, but they are more di cult to associate with controllable variables, such as ambient temperature. Our discussions of models (ii) and (iii) suggest we can choose mass-transfer rate constants that reproduce the kind of ob- served evolution to a bimodal PSD. But more investigation is needed to determine how the rate constants may be associated with the particles' geometry and the thermodynamics of the mass transport processes
