Control of Aphids on Spring Oats and Winter Wheat With Slow Release Granular Systemic Insecticides

Aphid infestations (Homoptera: Aphididae) on spring oat (Avena sativa) cv. \u27Ogle\u27, and during the fall on winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) cv. \u27Clark\u27, composed mainly of Rhopalosiphum padi and Macrosiphum avenae, were reduced with applications at the 2-3 leaf stage of slow release granular formulations of acephate, carbofuran, and disulfoton, compared with carbofuran 15G and untreated controls, in field trials during 1990-1991 in northwestern Indiana. These field results corroborated those obtained by previous studies with the same formulations and dosages in the laboratory. In oat, all insecticide treatments reduced aphid populations and percent- age aphid~infested plants, with a residual action of ca. 25 d. Barley yellow dwarf virus-like visual symptoms were reduced with disulfoton. In winter wheat, the residual action of all insecticide treatments in the fall lasted up to 19 d. The carbofuran treatment on winter wheat seedlings caused earthworms to move out of the soil, where they died; an effect requirining further study. Percentage of aphid-infested plants revealed relatively Wlder differences among tratments than total number of aphids in both test crops. Predation by Coleomegilla maculata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) contributed to the overall reduction of spring populations of cereal aphids in wheat and oat. Aphid mummies parasitized by micro-hymenopterans were common in oat plants

L’influence d’un livre, de Philippe Aubert de Gaspé fils, et Les révélations du crime, de François-Réal Angers, qui paraissent en 1837, peuvent être considérés comme nos deux premiers romans. La critique tend cependant à y voir des oeuvres dont le statut romanesque aurait été usurpé. Un examen plus attentif des transformations que subit le genre romanesque en France au même moment conduit à réévaluer ce jugement. L’inventaire des liens que ces oeuvres entretiennent avec la forme du journal et avec le roman-feuilleton, l’examen de leur dimension intertextuelle invitent à penser autrement leur horizon d’attente. Critical tradition, however, has generally asserted that these works were wrongfully identified as novels. A more careful analysis of the transformations that the novelistic genre was undergoing in France during the same period leads us to revise this judgment. An inventory of the explicit links between these works and the genres of the journal and the serialized novel, and an examination of their intertextual dimension, invite us to rethink the horizon of expectation against which the texts stood out at the time they were published. An analysis of the aesthetic choices of Angers and Aubert de Gaspé the younger shows that they knowingly chose to participate in the new, emerging aesthetic of the novel, relying on a hierarchization of the practices that were being established and on the choice of absolutely contemporary models.L’influence d’un livre, de Philippe Aubert de Gaspé hijo, y Les révélations du crime, de François-Réal Angers, ambas publicadas en 1837, se pueden considerar como nuestras dos primeras novelas. No obstante, la tradición crítica tiende a ver en ellas obras cuyo estatuto novelesco habría sido usurpado. Un estudio más atento de las transformaciones que sufre el género novelesco en Francia durante ese mismo período lleva a reevaluar este juicio. En efecto, el inventario de los vínculos explícitos que ambas obras mantienen con la forma del diario y con el género del folletín, así como el estudio de su dimensión intertextual, incitan a pensar de otra forma el horizonte de espera sobre cuyo fondo destacaban los textos en el momento de su publicación. CLUSTERING STATES TO IMPROVE THE STRATEGIC HIGHWAY SAFETY PLAN

Each update to a Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) can require a large amount of time, resources, and funding. From the requirements in U.S.C.148(a)(13)(E-F), in the SHSP update process states must consider the results of other transportation planning processes and develop a list of strategies to reduce or eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes (United States, 2023). To fulfill these requirements more efficiently and to gain the largest amount of benefit from said research, this thesis asks the question: how do we select other state transportation plans to study for ideas on improving our own SHSP? In this thesis, a k-means clustering method is proposed to group states based on a variety of factors. These include state demographics, roadway attributes, highway safety performance, and SHSP characteristics. Specific clusters of states can then be selected based on other states that share characteristics most like our own, or based on other states that have the best safety performance. Then, in future studies, the smaller group of states selected can be studied for successful safety improvement programs that have been implemented to gain ideas for improving our own state’s next SHSP. As a case study, the methodology and resulting conclusions are applied to Kentucky in this thesis

La dictée de Mérimée est créée et a lieu en 1857. Cet événement donne l’impression qu’une forme scolaire, la dictée, aurait migré vers un cadre mondain, celui d’une cour avide de distraction et de mécanismes de distinction. Qu’en est-il de cette forme dans l’univers scolaire de l’époque ? Quelle place les questions liées à la pédagogie et à l’instruction publique tiennent-elles dans le discours commun pour autoriser semblable transfert ? L’article tente de répondre à ces questions en s’attachant à la France, mais aussi au Québec où en 1857 naît Le Journal de l’instruction publique, qui se révèle lui aussi être un objet hybride dans lequel les questions de pédagogie et de mondanité s’entrecroisent.Mérimée’s dictation is created and takes place in 1857. This event suggests that a scholarly form, the dictation, had migrated towards an urbane context—that of a court obsessed with distraction and with mechanisms of distinction. What evidence of this form do we see in the scholarly universe of the era ? What place do questions linked to pedagogy and public instruction hold in the common discourse that would allow for such a transfer ? The article attempts to respond to these questions by examining the case of France, but also that of Quebec, where, in 1857, Le Journal de l’instruction publique appears, also a hybrid object in which questions of pedagogy and society life intersect

L’enchevêtrement des histoires littéraires dans la francophonie d’Amérique vu à travers le renouvellement épistémologique de l’histoire littéraire

Les transformations récentes des modèles épistémologiques de l’histoire littéraire conduisent à renouveler les pratiques en littérature. Ces changements, d’abord liés à la multiplication et au fractionnement des récits, naissent également d’un nouveau regard posé sur les questions d’archives, sur la matérialité des médias. Ces transformations mettent aussi en relief le contexte d’énonciation des oeuvres et réintroduisent la figure du lecteur. Ultimement, ces changements conduisent à placer les littératures francophones d’Amérique en interaction, à permettre la reconstruction, réelle et imaginaire, du lien social dans chacune des communautés et à favoriser l’élaboration d’un véritable processus de reconnaissance.The recent changes in literary history’s epistemological models have led to a renewal of practices in the field of literature. These changes, first related to the multiplication and fragmentation of narratives, also arise out of a new look at archival issues and the materiality of the media. These changes also emphasize the context of the discursive enunciation of the works and reintroduce the figure of the reader. Ultimately these changes lead to an interaction among Francophone literatures in North America and allow for the reconstruction, real or imaginary, of the social bond in each of these communities and encourage the development of a real process of recognition

A Study of the Biology of \u3ci\u3eRhopalosiphum Padi\u3c/i\u3e (Homoptera: Aphididae) in Winter Wheat in Northwestern Indiana

Periodic collections of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, during two years revealed small populations on winter wheat in Lafayette, Indiana. The greatest numbers were found on volunteer wheat plants before planting. In the autumn, aphids were detected on one-shoot plants by mid-October and also early March. The populations remained small until mid-June. We conclude that the aphid feeding did not significantly affect the plants, but helped spread barley yellow dwarf virus

An analysis of factors in the policymaking process that enabled prison sentence decreases through the 2022 Organic Law of Comprehensive Guarantee of Sexual Freedom/La Ley Del Solo Sí es Sí in Spain

To follow through on their ratification of the Istanbul Convention and public outcry after La Manada case, the Spanish Government passed the Organic Law of Comprehensive Guarantee of Sexual Freedom, also known as the law of only yes is yes (or la ley del solo sí es sí) - which came into effect on October 7, 2022. This law changed the Criminal Code by removing the distinction between sexual assault and sexual abuse, which previously caused victims to endure the difficult process of proving that there was violence and intimidation. By moving all sexual acts without consent under the category of sexual assault, the fusion of a previously two-category system caused the range of sentences to expand. This change reduced certain sentence minimums, allowing incarcerated sexual offenders to obtain sentence reductions through Article 2.2 of the Criminal Code. Specifically, as of April 14th, 978 sexual offenders have had their sentences reduced, and 104 have been released from prison. Therefore, this paper aims to comprehensively explain why la ley del solo sí es sí subsequently enabled sentence reductions for convicted sexual offenders. Through analyzing recent newspaper coverage and interviewing those familiar with the topic, this paper concludes that the reductions in the minimum penological framework, in combination with the lack of an explicit transitory provision, enabled judges to apply the law differently depending on if they followed Article 2.2 of the Criminal Code or the transitory provision of 1995, 2010, and 2015. Finally, this paper concludes by explaining the future of the law, specifically the recent reform and upcoming Supreme Court plenary session set to resolve the legal debate

In Case You Missed It: They Chose China

In the opening scenes of Shuibo Wang’s 2005 documentary, “They Chose China,” American soldiers dressed in the long, padded winter coats of the Chinese military cluster around a microphone to explain the international threat posed by McCarthy’s witch hunts and U.S. intolerance for freedom and democracy. The documentary tells the story of these twenty-one American soldiers, held as POWs by the Chinese during the Korean War, who refused repatriation after the 1953 armistice. Through a mix of archival footage, Chinese and American TV clips, and contemporary interviews with one of the few surviving defectors, Wang tries to unearth why the young men chose to stay in China, attend university, and work as factory workers, farmers, truck drivers, and government propagandists. All but one of the men returned to the U.S. prior to the Cultural Revolution. (The one who stayed, James Veneris, lived out his life as a factory worker in Shandong, his fellow workers protecting him from persecution during the Cultural Revolution.) Wang attempts to counter the argument that the men had been brainwashed by the Communist government (these soldiers were among the first tangible cases in U.S. media of the “brainwashing” phenomenon), instead presenting the men as “dissidents.” However, it becomes clear over the course of the movie that each of the men made the choice to stay for different reasons. Clarence Adams, a black soldier from Memphis, speaks of escaping from the racial discrimination and inequality in the United States, others seemed excited about the adventure of living in China, and others appear to have truly committed to socialism, maintaining their political beliefs even after returning to the U.S. China buffs will find most interesting the footage Wang dug up from the POW camps—including film of the camp-wide “Olympic Games” prisoners organized—and clips of the soldiers explaining why they chose to stay in China. The film is rather hard to track down in the U.S. unless your local university or public library has a copy; it is not currently available through either Netflix or Blockbuster

Development and evaluation of a biocompatible electroactive sensor for continuous blood pressure measurement.

Piezo-active composites have been implemented for sensing and transduction for decades. The 0-3 ceramic/polymer composite is one of the most common composite types used for sensing applications, owing to their tailorable properties of the two-phase composition, consisting of a three-dimensionally connected polymer/rubber matrix (inactive phase) with a dispersion of isolated piezo-ceramic particles (active phase). This thesis describes a method to develop novel biocompatible perivascular band comprised of a two-phase piezo-active composite to be fabricated using simple manufacturing processes. Biomaterials such as tissue scaffolds comprised of silk fibroin (SF) and chitosan (CS), and biocompatible soft rubbers will be implemented as the three dimensional inactive matrix, while a biocompatible piezo-ceramic nanoparticle such as Zinc Oxide (ZnO) will be pursued as the piezo-active ceramic particles. Two compositions were pursued, 1.) a biocompatible/biodegradable approach consisting of tissue scaffold (SFCS) and ZnO particle formulation and 2.) a biocompatible soft rubber and ZnO particle formulation. Test samples were fabricated using aforementioned formulations and tested on a custom built dynamic biaxial testing apparatus to correlate mechanical strain to piezoelectric output correlation
