Provision of Information to Rural Communities in Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria

The study surveyed the provision of information services to rural  communities in Nguro-Soye district of Bama Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. Objective of the study include assessing information needs profile and he existing information service providers in Soye Community. Simple random sampling method was used to obtain  proportional figures of 300 people. The instrument used for data collection was a structured interview schedule designed by the researchers referred to as Rural Community Information Service Survey (RCISS). Three hundred (300) copies of the instrument were administered and 275 copies were returned, representing 91.7%. Data collected were analysed using  descriptive statistics of frequencies and percentages. The findings of the study showed that rural people in the Soye district have identifiable information needs mainly in the areas of agriculture, health, government programmes and small scale industries. They visit the existing information service providers in the community to satisfy these needs. However, majority of them expressed that they are not satisfied with information provided to them by these agencies. Findings further revealed that majorityof the respondents are aware of ICT services – such as radio and television broadcast, and GSM, except the internet, in the provision of information dissemination and communication. Based on the findings of the study, itwas recommended among others that community participation in provision and dissemination of information should be encouraged through regular consultations, meetings and discussions between the community membersand information providers

Gender Differences in Use of Electronic Resources in University Libraries of Adamawa State, Nigeria

The study investigated gender difference in attitudes of students towards the use of electronic resources in university libraries of Adamawa State, Nigeria. Gender issue has become a widely discussed phenomenon in higher education sector. How has gender affected the use of electronic information resources among students since this format of resources has become commonly available in university libraries? It is against this background that the researchers investigated how gender difference has affected the attitudes of students towards the use of these resources. The objectives of the study were to determine the types of e-resources, use of e-resources, purpose of using e-resources, how students acquire their search skills, and whether there is significant difference between male and female students’ attitudes towards the use of e-resources in the university libraries under study. Survey research was used. The target population was 5,269 students and a sample of 1,053 out of which 724 responded to the questionnaire which comprises of 496 male students and 228 female students that were used for the study. Descriptive and inferential statistics (t-test) was used for the analysis of data collected. The major findings revealed that the resources are used mainly for research and assignments. Students acquire theirs search skills through friends and colleagues and library instructions. There exists statistical difference between male and female students’ attitudes towards the use of e-resources. The mean value of 23.5302 for male students is greater than that of female 21.4693 Recommendations made include: sustaining the acquisition of e-resources, periodic training of students and female students should develop positive attitudes towards the use of e-resources to enhance their academic pursuits

Use of CD-Rom databases by staff and students in the University of Jos Library

The focus of this study is the use of CD-ROM databases by staff and students in the university of Jos library. This is of interest as CD-ROM database services is in consonant with the vision of providing excellent and effective information services to all staff and students of university of Jos. The study was guided by six objectives. In order to achieve objectives, questionnaire was designed and administered on a sample of 2570 out of which 2332 were properly filled, returned and used for the study. Interview was conducted with some staff, students and system unit librarian mainly to supplement information provided by the questionnaire.. Tables and bar charts were used for data analysis and presentation. Analyses revealed that many staff and students were not properly informed of the existence of CD-Rom databases in the library and they use inappropriate search terms thereby retrieving irrelevant information. CD-ROMs are mostly used for literature search and teaching. Staff and students preferred the use of CD-ROMs to the use of printed materials, and the major problem with the use of CD-ROMs is inappropriate use of search terms. Researcher recommended among others, that University of Jos library should organize regular training workshops for staff and students on the use of CD-ROMs, demonstrate and teach them how to form proper search terms for better information retrieval to meet their information needs as well as saving their time.The Information Technologist Vol. 5 (1) 2008: pp. 1-1

Availability And Utilization Of Information And Communication Technology In The Adamawa State Civil Service

This study surveyed the availability and utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Adamawa State Civil Service. Five hundred and thirty (530) civil servants were involved in the study. They included lower, middle and upper level civil servants. Major results of the study are as follows: Personal computers are the major ICT components available in the civil service, other components of ICT such as Audio-Visual materials, CD-ROM, video recorders and players, projectors, cameras, camcorders are not available in most ministries. Hence, majority of the civilservants consider personal computers as ICT in its totality. The internet and other ICT components are not widely utilized in most ministries. Very few libraries and information centers are available in ministries. These libraries do not have other ICT components except personal computers that are not connected to the internet. Recommendations have been proffered

Impact of collaboration on research and teaching activities of academic scientists in federal universities in North East Nigeria

This study was designed to determine the impact of collaboration on research and teaching activities of Academic Scientists in Federal Universities in the North- East Nigeria. Survey research design was used for this study and the population comprised of all academic scientists of the three universities. The population of the academic scientists in the three universities was 275 and their entire population was used for the study. One research question and two hypotheses were formulated to address the three objectives of the study. Questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency counts, percentages) and chi-square statistical tool was used to test hypotheses. Major findings show that collaboration among the academic scientists in Federal Universities in North East Nigeria is high and appreciated among them; Collaboration has significant impact on the research and teaching activities of the academic scientists in Federal Universities in North East Nigeria
