Experimental Observation of Coherence and Stochastic Resonances in an Electronic Chua Circuit
Stochastic and coherence resonances appear in nonlinear systems subjected to
an external source of noise and are characterized by a maximum response at the
optimal value of the noise intensity. This paper shows experimentally that it
is possible to observe them in a chaotic system. To this end we have analysed
an electronic Chua circuit running in the chaotic regime and added noise to its
dynamics. In the case of coherence resonance, we observe an optimal periodicity
for the jumps between chaotic attractors, whereas in the case of stochastic
resonance we observe a maximum in the signal-to-noise ratio at the frequency of
an external sinusoidal perturbation.Comment: 6 page
Raman microprobe characterization of electrodeposited S-rich CuIn(S,Se)2 for photovoltaic applications: Microstructural analysis
This article reports a detailed Raman scattering and microstructural characterization of S-rich CuIn(S,Se)2 absorbers produced by electrodeposition of nanocrystalline CuInSe2 precursors and subsequent reactive annealing under sulfurizing conditions. Surface and in-depth resolved Raman microprobe measurements have been correlated with the analysis of the layers by optical and scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and in-depth Auger electron spectroscopy. This has allowed corroboration of the high crystalline quality of the sulfurized layers. The sulfurizing conditions used also lead to the formation of a relatively thick MoS2 intermediate layer between the absorber and the Mo back contact. The analysis of the absorbers has also allowed identification of the presence of In-rich secondary phases, which are likely related to the coexistence in the electrodeposited precursors of ordered vacancy compound domains with the main chalcopyrite phase, in spite of the Cu-rich conditions used in the growth. This points out the higher complexity of the electrodeposition and sulfurization processes in relation to those based in vacuum deposition techniques

Effect of Statistical Fluctuation in Monte Carlo Based Photon Beam Dose Calculation on Gamma Index Evaluation
The gamma-index test has been commonly adopted to quantify the degree of
agreement between a reference dose distribution and an evaluation dose
distribution. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation has been widely used for the
radiotherapy dose calculation for both clinical and research purposes. The goal
of this work is to investigate both theoretically and experimentally the impact
of the MC statistical fluctuation on the gamma-index test when the fluctuation
exists in the reference, the evaluation, or both dose distributions. To the
first order approximation, we theoretically demonstrated in a simplified model
that the statistical fluctuation tends to overestimate gamma-index values when
existing in the reference dose distribution and underestimate gamma-index
values when existing in the evaluation dose distribution given the original
gamma-index is relatively large for the statistical fluctuation. Our numerical
experiments using clinical photon radiation therapy cases have shown that 1)
when performing a gamma-index test between an MC reference dose and a non-MC
evaluation dose, the average gamma-index is overestimated and the passing rate
decreases with the increase of the noise level in the reference dose; 2) when
performing a gamma-index test between a non-MC reference dose and an MC
evaluation dose, the average gamma-index is underestimated when they are within
the clinically relevant range and the passing rate increases with the increase
of the noise level in the evaluation dose; 3) when performing a gamma-index
test between an MC reference dose and an MC evaluation dose, the passing rate
is overestimated due to the noise in the evaluation dose and underestimated due
to the noise in the reference dose. We conclude that the gamma-index test
should be used with caution when comparing dose distributions computed with
Monte Carlo simulation
Role of Dicer1-DependentFactors in the Paracrine Regulation of Epididymal Gene Expression
Dicer1 is an endoribonuclease involved in the biogenesis of functional molecules such as microRNAs (miRNAs) and endogenous small interfering RNAs (endo-siRNAs). These small non-coding RNAs are important regulators of post-transcriptional gene expression and participate in the control of male fertility. With the knowledge that 1) Dicer1-dependent factors are required for proper sperm maturation in the epididymis, and that 2) miRNAs are potent mediators of intercellular communication in most biological systems, we investigated the role of Dicer1-dependent factors produced by the proximal epididymis (initial segment/caput)-including miRNAs-on the regulation of epididymal gene expression in the distal epididymis regions (i.e. corpus and cauda). To this end, we performed comparative microarray and ANOVA analyses on control vs. Defb41(iCre/wt); Dicer1(fl/fl) mice in which functional Dicer1 is absent from the principal cells of the proximal epididymis. We identified 35 and 33 transcripts that displayed significant expression level changes in the corpus and cauda regions (Fold change > 2 or 2 or < -2; p < 0.01). These miRNAs are secreted via extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from the DC2 epididymal principal cell line, and their expression correlates with target transcripts involved in distinct biological pathways, as evidenced by in silico analysis. Albeit correlative and based on in silico approach, our study proposes that Dicer1-dependent factors trigger-directly or not-significant genes expression changes in distinct regions of this organ. The paracrine control of functions important to post-testicular sperm maturation by Dicer1-dependent factors may open new avenues for the identification of molecular targets important to male fertility control
Quadratic solitons as nonlocal solitons
We show that quadratic solitons are equivalent to solitons of a nonlocal Kerr
medium. This provides new physical insight into the properties of quadratic
solitons, often believed to be equivalent to solitons of an effective saturable
Kerr medium. The nonlocal analogy also allows for novel analytical solutions
and the prediction of novel bound states of quadratic solitons.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
