    Enhancing single-parameter quantum charge pumping in carbon-based devices

    We present a theoretical study of quantum charge pumping with a single ac gate applied to graphene nanoribbons and carbon nanotubes operating with low resistance contacts. By combining Floquet theory with Green's function formalism, we show that the pumped current can be tuned and enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude by an appropriate choice of device length, gate voltage intensity and driving frequency and amplitude. These results offer a promising alternative for enhancing the pumped currents in these carbon-based devices.Comment: 3.5 pages, 2 figure

    Uniform non-stoichiometric titanium nitride thin films for improved kinetic inductance detector array

    We describe the fabrication of homogeneous sub-stoichiometric titanium nitride films for microwave kinetic inductance detector (mKID) arrays. Using a 6 inch sputtering target and a homogeneous nitrogen inlet, the variation of the critical temperature over a 2 inch wafer was reduced to <25 %. Measurements of a 132-pixel mKID array from these films reveal a sensitivity of 16 kHz/pW in the 100 GHz band, comparable to the best aluminium mKIDs. We measured a noise equivalent power of NEP = 3.6e-15 W/Hz^(1/2).     Clastic huntite in upper Neogene formations of the Kozani basin, Macedonia, Northern Greece

    An unusual carbonate mineral, huntite (Mg3Ca(CO3)4) , is present in Upper Neogene lacustrine formations of the Kozaai Basin, Northern Greece. This carbonate, either pure or mixed with variable proportions of bydromagnesite and magnesite, forms extensive deposits that accumulated in ponds on a lake-margin carbonate flat. Although labile and metastabl¢, huntite also is the main detrital component of fluvial.dominated delta sequences in some parts of the basin. Clastie huntite is present mainly in foresets, trough cross-stratified units, and channel forms in terrigenous lithofacies towards the basal part of deltaic assemblages. Detachment of fragments from cohesive huntite pond deposits may have been favored by expansion through wetting rather than by desiccation and further contraction of the chemical sediment. This first documented occurrence of elastic huntite places some uncertainties on the presumed chemical and mechanical instability of huntite under natural conditions

    NIKEL_AMC: Readout electronics for the NIKA2 experiment

    The New Iram Kid Arrays-2 (NIKA2) instrument has recently been installed at the IRAM 30 m telescope. NIKA2 is a state-of-art instrument dedicated to mm-wave astronomy using microwave kinetic inductance detectors (KID) as sensors. The three arrays installed in the camera, two at 1.25 mm and one at 2.05 mm, feature a total of 3300 KIDs. To instrument these large array of detectors, a specifically designed electronics, composed of 20 readout boards and hosted in three microTCA crates, has been developed. The implemented solution and the achieved performances are presented in this paper. We find that multiplexing factors of up to 400 detectors per board can be achieved with homogeneous performance across boards in real observing conditions, and a factor of more than 3 decrease in volume with respect to previous generations.Comment: 21 pages; 16 figure

    In the classical theorems of extreme value theory the limits of suitably rescaled maxima of sequences of independent, identically distributed random variables are studied. So far, only affine rescalings have been considered. We show, however, that more general rescalings are natural and lead to new limit distributions, apart from the Gumbel, Weibull, and Fr\'echet families. The problem is approached using the language of Renormalization Group transformations in the space of probability densities. The limit distributions are fixed points of the transformation and the study of the differential around them allows a local analysis of the domains of attraction and the computation of finite-size corrections.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. In this paper we provide axiomatizations of various classes of preassociative functions, where preassociativity is a generalization of associativity recently introduced by the authors.     A prototype of digital frequency multiplexing electronics allowing the real time monitoring of microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKIDs) arrays for mm-wave astronomy has been developed. Thanks to the frequency multiplexing, it can monitor simultaneously 400 pixels over a 500 MHz bandwidth and requires only two coaxial cables for instrumenting such a large array.     An analytical investigation into solute transport and sorption via intra-particle diffusion in the dual-porosity limit

    We develop a mathematical model for adsorption based on averaging the flow around, and diffusion inside, adsorbent particles in a column. The model involves three coupled partial differential equations for the contaminant concentration both in the carrier fluid and within the particle as well as the adsorption rate. The adsorption rate is modelled using the Sips equation, which is suitable for describing both physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. Non-dimensionalisation is used to determine the controlling parameter groups as well as to determine negligible terms and so reduce the system complexity. The inclusion of intra-particle diffusion introduces new dimensionless parameters to those found in standard works, including a form of internal Damk\"ohler number and a new characteristic time scale. We provide a numerical method for the full model and show how in certain situations a travelling wave approach can be utilized to find analytical solutions. The model is validated against available experimental data for the removal of Mercury(II) and CO2_\text{2}. The results show excellent agreement with measurements of column outlet contaminant concentration and provide insights into the underlying chemical reactions.Comment: 36 pages, 10 figures, 8 table
