Der soziale Gebrauch von Musik und musikalische Selbstsozialisation: Musiksoziologie zwischen Klassen- und Individualisierungstheorie

"Die soziologischen Perspektiven auf Musik als symbolische Form gesellschaftlicher Praxis sind vielfältig: An die strukturalistische Sicht, die das Umgehen mit Musik als das Resultat von Klassen- oder Schichtzugehörigkeiten auffasst, schließt sich die kulturalistische These der Reproduktion sozialer Ungleichheitsstrukturen durch den sozialen Gebrauch von Musik an. Aus individualisierungstheoretischer Perspektive besteht der soziale Gebrauch von Musik demgegenüber darin, soziale und kulturelle Differenzierungen erst herzustellen. Die von kulturellen und sozialen Vorgaben frei gesetzten Einzelnen können - und müssen - musikalische Umgehensweisen, Zugehörigkeiten zu Musikkulturen und musikbezogene Identitäten wählen, sich musikalisch selbst sozialisieren. Insofern ist die Frage nach der sozialen Natur der Musik die Frage danach, ob und inwieweit Musik eher als ein Mittel der Reproduktion alter sozialer Ungleichheiten, als ein Mittel der Produktion neuer sozialer Ungleichheiten oder als ein Mittel der Überschreitung gesellschaftlicher Grenzen aufgefasst werden kann. Auch für eine eher individualisierungstheoretisch ausgerichtete Musiksoziologie stellt sich somit die Aufgabe, die erweiterten musikbezogenen Handlungsspielräume und Wahlmöglichkeiten auszuloten, d.h. die gewonnenen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten des Umgehens mit Musik auf ihre Voraussetzungen und ihre Ressourcengebundenheit zu hinterfragen. Der Beitrag widmet sich der Verortung der Musiksoziologie in dem genannten Spannungsfeld der Ungleichheitsdebatte. Dazu wird das Konzept des sozialen Gebrauchs von Musik zunächst u.a. unter Rückgriff auf die Theorie Bourdieus konkretisiert. Kontrastierend dazu wird musikalische Selbstsozialisation als Entscheidungsprozess für soziomusikalische Praktiken dargestellt, der der soziokulturellen Verortung und somit der Orientierung dient. Pleasure and Politics. Making Youth-Cultural Commitment Visible

Youth and politics as well as pleasure and politics are often seen as bad matches. Accordingly, today’s youth is diagnosed as generally indifferent towards politics. We suggest, that politics in youth cultures can only be made visible by looking at it from a different angle: from the perspective of reconcilability between work, politics and pleasure. This article provides and discusses a theoretical framework for the analysis of the connections between them in youth cultural contexts. Increasing medialisation and globalisation make cultural symbols accessible to almost everyone. This results in a “devaluation” of style as a marker of distinction and self-positioning. We argue that this devaluation of style causes a shift of focus onto ostensibly non-stylistic aspects in youth cultures – i.e. onto commitment, work or politics. Youth cultures can therefore be viewed as contexts in which self-professionalisation, self-education and self-socialisation take place. Even though within the field of youth culture research, youth-cultural activities are therefore no longer considered to be merely recreational activities or pastimes, youth cultural participation still means the pleasure of sharing certain cultural activities and, beyond this, the pleasure of resistance. We suggest that understanding the – in some ways unexpected und partly still unexplored – connections young people establish between work, politics and pleasure provides insight into new forms of their political commitment

A pragmatic randomized trial comparing tablet computer informed consent to traditional paper-based methods for an osteoporosis study

AbstractObjectiveMethods to improve informed consent efficiency and effectiveness are needed for pragmatic clinical trials. We compared informed consent using a tablet computer to a paper approach to assess comprehension and satisfaction of patients and clinic staff for a future osteoporosis clinical trial.MethodsNine community-based practices identified and recruited patients to compare the informed consent processes (tablet vs. paper) in a mock osteoporosis clinical trial. The tablet informed consent included an animation summarizing the trial, complete informed consent document, and questions to assess and reinforce comprehension of the study. Participants were women age ≥55 years with ≥1 year of alendronate use. We surveyed participants to assess comprehension and satisfaction and office staff for satisfaction and perceived time demands.ResultsThe nine practices enrolled 33 participants. There was not a significant difference in comprehension between the tablet vs. paper informed consent [mean (SD) tablet: 12.2 (1.0) vs. paper: 11.4 (1.7)]. Office staff preferred the tablet to the paper informed consent for identifying potential study participants (two-sided t-test p = 0.02) despite an increased perceived time spent to complete the tablet process [tablet: 28.3 min (SD 16.3) vs. paper: 19.0 min (SD 6.9); p = 0.08].ConclusionsAlthough, there were no significant differences in participant satisfaction and comprehension with the tablet informed consent compared to a paper informed consent, patients and office staff trended towards greater satisfaction with the tablet informed consent. Larger studies are needed to further evaluate the utility of electronic informed consent in pragmatic clinical trials
