    Dynamic decoherence control of a solid-state nuclear quadrupole qubit

    We report on the application of a dynamic decoherence control pulse sequence on a nuclear quadrupole transition in Pr3+:Y2SiO5Pr^{3+}:Y_2SiO_5 . Process tomography is used to analyse the effect of the pulse sequence. The pulse sequence was found to increase the decoherence time of the transition to over 30 seconds. Although the decoherence time was significantly increased, the population terms were found to rapidly decay on the application of the pulse sequence. The increase of this decay rate is attributed to inhomogeneity in the ensemble. Methods to circumvent this limit are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    The effectiveness of the Penn Resiliency Programme (PRP) and its adapted versions in reducing depression and anxiety and improving explanatory style: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    Mental health promotion in schools is a key priority for national governments. The aim of this meta-aggregation is to synthesise the findings from universal, depression and/or anxiety, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and/or Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)-based, programmes implemented in schools, which are focused on reducing depression and anxiety in student populations aged 8-17 years. Electronic databases were searched for published original qualitative studies which assess students’ perceptions and experiences from participating in universal, school-based, depression and/or anxiety, prevention programmes. Extraction and synthesis of findings was assisted by NVivo qualitative data analysis software. The Joanna Briggs Institute-Qualitative Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-QARI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for Interpretative and Critical Research was used for assessing methodological quality of the included studies. The confidence of synthesised qualitative findings (ConQual) approach was followed for assessing the confidence in the estimates of syntheses output. Five studies from Australia, Sweden, and UK met the inclusion criteria. Modification in the structure and mode of implementation of universal prevention programmes is required in order to enhance programmes’ applicability and impact. The study provides key practical recommendations to stakeholders and policy makers about the content, delivery, and implementation of school-based, universal, prevention programmes

    Saudi service users' perceptions and experiences of the quality of their mental health care provision in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA): A qualitative inquiry.

    This paper presents, as part of a larger mixed-methods design, a study generating a theoretical understanding of issues pertinent to the quality of mental health care in the KSA from the perspective of those using services. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with thirty service users admitted to inpatient psychiatric wards, using an interview guide developed by the researchers, based on relevant literature. Findings from the thematic analysis showed five themes: (1) The hospital as a prison: a custody versus care dilemma, (2) quality of interactions between staff and service users, (3) quality of services, (4) staff qualities and (5) suggestions for achieving quality of care. A theoretical model drawing upon Donabedian Health Care Model for Evaluating quality of care and the Andersen Behavioural Model of Health Service Use is evident from the data. Structural aspects of care include staff experience and qualifications and key enablers around social and financial support, service users' health needs and status and the physical infrastructure and ward rules. These drive processes of care based upon robust rates of interaction between staff and service users and appear central to quality of mental health care in KSA. Quality of mental health care in KSA is manifested by a therapeutic ethos with a high degree of interaction between professional carers and service users, with the former being highly educated, competent, compassionate, with a high degree of self-awareness, and specialized in mental health. We have uncovered elements of Fanon and Azoulay's 'Cultural Originality' as well as contemporary examples of Goffman's mortification of the self. [Abstract copyright: © 2020 The Authors.     Clinician experiences on training and awareness of sexual orientation in NHS Talking Therapies Services for Anxiety and Depression

    Previous research that explored sexual minority service users’ experiences of accessing NHS Talking Therapies for Anxiety and Depression Services highlighted the need for specific sexual orientation training. Inconsistent or lack of training may contribute to disparities in treatment outcomes between sexual minority service users and heterosexual service users. The aim of the study was to explore clinicians’ competencies working with sexual minority service users, their experiences of sexual orientation training, their view of current gaps intraining provision, and ways to improve training. Self-reported sexual orientation competency scales and open ended questions were used to address the aims of the study. Participants (n=83) included Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) and high-intensity CBT therapists (HITs). Responses on competency scales were analysed using Kruskal–Wallis tests and thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative responses. Participants who identified as 25–29 years old had higher scores on the knowledge scale than 45+-year-olds.Bisexual participants also had higher scores on the knowledge subscale than heterosexual participants. Threeover-arching themes were identified: (a) training received on sexual minority issues by Talking Therapies clinicians, (b) clinicians’ experiences of accessing and receiving sexual minority training, and (c) perceived gaps in current sexual minority training and ways to improve training. Findings were linked to previous literature and recommendations to stakeholders are made throughout the Discussion section with the view of improving sexual orientation training

    Chain Deformation for a Polymer Melt under Shear

    We used a Couette cell placed within an NMR microscopy apparatus to examine molecular alignment in polydimethylsiloxane melts under shear. 1H dipolar interactions are used to examine main chain ordering while 2H NMR quadrupole splittings are measured in a deuterated oligomer probe, in each case selectively observing different alignment orientations with respect to the flow field. While the main chain results are consistent with the alignment tensor as measured by birefringence, the oligomer senses a uniaxial environment whose director is normal to the velocity-vorticity plane. In the light of these results we propose supramolecular ordering involving polymer stratification

    The strengths based approach as a service delivery model for severe mental illness: a meta-analysis of clinical trials

    Background The strengths-based approach is considered a paradigm shift from the deficits- focused service delivery models. The aim of this review was to systematically review randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi experimental studies examining the impact of the strengths-based approach on level of functioning and quality of life as primary outcomes and psychotic symptoms as secondary outcomes in people diagnosed with severe mental illness. Methods This review was conducted in the School of Health Sciences, University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. Participants in the primary studies were adults diagnosed with psychotic disorders. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed independently by two reviewers using “Consort 2010” checklist for the randomized controlled trials or “TREND” for the quasi-experimental studies. The EPOC checklist was used for data extraction while management of data and meta-analysis were performed using Review Manager software (RevMan version 5.2). Results No significant difference was found between the strengths-based approach and other service delivery models in level of functioning and quality of life. However, a significant effect on symptoms favouring other service delivery models was reported. Conclusion Based upon evidence of moderate quality, this review suggests there is no effect of the strengths-based model of service delivery in level of functioning and quality of life in adults diagnosed with severe mental illness. The number of trials is low; therefore further evidence is required to ascertain the impact of the strengths-based approach in community mental health care

    A Template for a New Generic Geographically Weighted R Package gwverse

    GWR is a popular approach for investigating the spatial variation in relationships between response and predictor variables, and critically for investigating and understanding process spatial heterogeneity. The geographically weighted (GW) framework is increasingly used to accommodate different types of models and analyses, reflecting a wider desire to explore spatial variation in model parameters and outputs. However, the growth in the use of GWR and different GW models has only been partially supported by package development in both R and Python, the major coding environments for spatial analysis. The result is that refinements have been inconsistently included within GWR and GW functions in any given package. This paper outlines the structure of a new gwverse package, that may over time replace GW model, that takes advantage of recent developments in the composition of complex, integrated packages. It conceptualizes gwverse as having a modular structure, that separates core GW functionality and applications such as GWR. It adopts a function factory approach, in which bespoke functions are created and returned to the user based on user-defined parameters. The paper introduces two demonstrator modules that can be used to undertake GWR and identifies a number of key considerations and next steps

    Measurement of statistical nuclear spin polarization in a nanoscale GaAs sample

    We measure the statistical polarization of quadrupolar nuclear spins in a sub-micrometer (0.6 um^3) particle of GaAs using magnetic resonance force microscopy. The crystalline sample is cut out of a GaAs wafer and attached to a micro-mechanical cantilever force sensor using a focused ion beam technique. Nuclear magnetic resonance is demonstrated on ensembles containing less than 5 x 10^8 nuclear spins and occupying a volume of around (300 nm)^3 in GaAs with reduced volumes possible in future experiments. We discuss how the further reduction of this detection volume will bring the spin ensemble into a regime where random spin fluctuations, rather than Boltzmann polarization, dominate its dynamics. The detection of statistical polarization in GaAs therefore represents an important first step toward 3D magnetic resonance imaging of III-V materials on the nanometer-scale.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 1 supplementary fil
