We present an overview of some significant results of Thurston and their impact on mathematics. The final version of this paper will appear as Chapter 1 of the book "In the tradition of Thurston: Geometry and topology", edited by K. Ohshika and A. Papadopoulos (Springer, 2020)

Sonic Hedgehog and Notch Signaling Can Cooperate to Regulate Neurogenic Divisions of Neocortical Progenitors

Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and innate-like lymphocytes have important roles in immune responses in the context of infection, cancer, and autoimmunity. The factors involved in driving the differentiation and function of these cell types remain to be clearly defined. There are several cellular signaling pathways involved in embryogenesis, which continue to function in adult tissue. In particular, the WNT, NOTCH, and Hedgehog signaling pathways are emerging as regulators of hematopoietic cell development and differentiation. This review discusses the currently known roles of WNT, NOTCH, and Hedgehog signaling in the differentiation and function of ILCs and innate-like lymphocytes

GUILT AS A REVERSE: THE STATE'S DISRESPONSIBILITY WITH THE VICTIMS OF THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP IN K. REPORT OF A SEARCH AND VISITORS, BY BERNARDO KUCINSKI

This work analyzes the feeling of guilt in the works K. Relato de uma Busca (2011) and Os visitors (2016), by Bernardo Kucinski. The first book deals with the saga of a father in search of his daughter, Ana Rosa, probably murdered by torturers during the Military Dictatorship (1984-1985) in Brazil. The second consists of reviewing certain points of view presented in the first text from readers who visit the author and question him. It is noted, in several passages of the books, that the father feels guilty for the death of his daughter, while the State acts violently, including confessing certain crimes, without being punished or held accountable for his actions. These are books that promote reflection on the power exercised by the State both in the past and in the present, thus stimulating resistance to authoritarianism. To support this proposal, the theoretical assumptions of Sigmund Freud, Cathy Caruth, Giorgio Agamben and Márcio Seligmann-Silva are taken into account

A bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) based protocol for characterizing proliferating progenitors in Xenopus embryos.

International audienceBrdU is a thymidine analog that is incorporated into DNA during the S-phase of the cell cycle. BrdU incorporation can be used to quantify the number of cells that are in S-phase in the time period that BrdU is available. Thus, BrdU incorporation is an essential method in the quantitative analysis of cell proliferation, during normal embryonic development or after experimental manipulation. It is a reliable and versatile method that can be easily combined with immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization to relate cell proliferation with gene expression. BrdU incorporation has been used in all model organisms; here, we describe a protocol adapted for use in Xenopus embryos
