Pair Production of Topological anti de Sitter Black Holes

    Get PDF
The pair creation of black holes with event horizons of non-trivial topology is described. The spacetimes are all limiting cases of the cosmological CC metric. They are generalizations of the (2+1)(2+1) dimensional black hole and have asymptotically anti de Sitter behaviour. Domain walls instantons can mediate their pair creation for a wide range of mass and charge.Comment: 4 pages, uses late

Can managed health care help manage health care-associated infections?

    Get PDF
Managed-care organizations have a unique opportunity, still largely unrealized, to collaborate with health-care providers and epidemiologists to prevent health care-associated infections. Several attributes make these organizations logical collaborators for infection control programs: they have responsibility for defined populations of enrollees and for their overall health, including preventive care; they possess unique data resources about their members and their care; and they are able to make systemwide changes in care. Health care-associated infections merit the attention and effort of managed-care organizations because these infections are common, incur substantial illness and costs, and can be effectively prevented by using methods that are unevenly applied in different health-care settings. Both national and local discussions will be required to enable the most effective and efficient collaborations between managed care organizations and health-care epidemiologists. It will be important to articulate clear goals and standards that can be readily understood and widely adopted

Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation Anisotropy Induced by Cosmic Strings

We report on a current investigation of the anisotropy pattern induced by cosmic strings on the cosmic microwave background radiation (MBR). We have numerically evolved a network of cosmic strings from a redshift of Z=100Z = 100 to the present and calculated the anisotropies which they induce. Based on a limited number of realizations, we have compared the results of our simulations with the observations of the COBE-DMR experiment. We have obtained a preliminary estimate of the string mass-per-unit-length μ\mu in the cosmic string scenario.Comment: 8 pages of TeX - [Color] Postscript available by anonymous ftp at ftp://fnas08.fnal.gov:/pub/Publications/Conf-94-197-A, FERMILAB-Conf-94/197-

    Phantom without UV pathology

We present a simple model in which the weak energy condition is violated for spatially homogeneous, slowly evolving fields. The excitations about Lorentz-violating background in Minkowski space do not contain ghosts, tachyons or superluminal modes at spatial momenta ranging from some low scale epsilon to the UV cutoff scale, while tachyons and possibly ghosts do exist at p^2 < epsilon^2. We show that in the absence of other matter, slow roll cosmological regime is possible; in this regime p+rho<0, and yet homogeneity and isotropy are not completely spoiled (at the expence of fine-tuning), since for given conformal momentum, the tachyon mode grows for short enough period of time.Comment: 19 pages. Study of guidance techniques for aerial application of agricultural compounds

    Get PDF
Candidate systems were identified for evaluation of suitability in meeting specified accuracy requirements for a swath guidance system in an agriculture aircraft. Further examination reduced the list of potential candidates to a single category, i.e., transponder type systems, for detailed evaluation. Within this category three systems were found which met the basic accuracy requirements of the work statement. The Flying Flagman, the Electronic Flagging and the Raydist Director System. In addition to evaluating the systems against the specified requirements, each system was compared with the other two systems on a relative basis. The conclusions supported by the analyses show the Flying Flagman system to be the most suitable system currently available to meet the requirements

Large Angular Scale CMB Anisotropy Induced by Cosmic Strings

We simulate the anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) induced by cosmic strings. By numerically evolving a network of cosmic strings we generate full-sky CMB temperature anisotropy maps. Based on 192192 maps, we compute the anisotropy power spectrum for multipole moments 20\ell \le 20. By comparing with the observed temperature anisotropy, we set the normalization for the cosmic string mass-per-unit-length μ\mu, obtaining Gμ/c2=1.050.20+0.35×106G\mu/c^2=1.05 {}^{+0.35}_{-0.20} \times10^{-6}, which is consistent with all other observational constraints on cosmic strings. We demonstrate that the anisotropy pattern is consistent with a Gaussian random field on large angular scales.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, two postscript files, also available at http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/defects/ to appear in Physical Review Letters, 23 September 199

Quantum Creation of Topological Black Hole

The constrained instanton method is used to study quantum creation of a vacuum or charged topological black hole. At the WKBWKB level, the relative creation probability is the exponential of a quarter sum of the horizon areas associated with the seed instanton.Comment: Report-no change onl

Anisotropy of the Cosmic Neutrino Background

    Get PDF
The cosmic neutrino background (CNB) consists of low-energy relic neutrinos which decoupled from the cosmological fluid at a redshift z ~ 10^{10}. Despite being the second-most abundant particles in the universe, direct observation remains a distant challenge. Based on the measured neutrino mass differences, one species of neutrinos may still be relativistic with a thermal distribution characterized by the temperature T ~ 1.9K. We show that the temperature distribution on the sky is anisotropic, much like the photon background, experiencing Sachs-Wolfe and integrated Sachs-Wolfe effects.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures / updated references, discussion of earlier wor

Comments on scalar-tensor representation of nonlocally corrected gravity

The scalar-tensor representation of nonlocally corrected gravity is considered. Some special solutions of the vacuum background equations were obtained that indicate to the nonequivalence of the initial theory and its scalar-tensor representation.Comment: 6 pages, refs adde
