Conditional strategies and the evolution of cooperation in spatial public goods games
The fact that individuals will most likely behave differently in different
situations begets the introduction of conditional strategies. Inspired by this,
we study the evolution of cooperation in the spatial public goods game, where
besides unconditional cooperators and defectors, also different types of
conditional cooperators compete for space. Conditional cooperators will
contribute to the public good only if other players within the group are likely
to cooperate as well, but will withhold their contribution otherwise. Depending
on the number of other cooperators that are required to elicit cooperation of a
conditional cooperator, the latter can be classified in as many types as there
are players within each group. We find that the most cautious cooperators, such
that require all other players within a group to be conditional cooperators,
are the undisputed victors of the evolutionary process, even at very low
synergy factors. We show that the remarkable promotion of cooperation is due
primarily to the spontaneous emergence of quarantining of defectors, which
become surrounded by conditional cooperators and are forced into isolated
convex "bubbles" from where they are unable to exploit the public good. This
phenomenon can be observed only in structured populations, thus adding to the

Large-Scale Simulations of Clusters of Galaxies
We discuss some of the computational challenges encountered in simulating the
evolution of clusters of galaxies. Eulerian adaptive mesh refinement (AMR)
techniques can successfully address these challenges but are currently being
used by only a few groups. We describe our publicly available AMR code, FLASH,
which uses an object-oriented framework to manage its AMR library, physics
modules, and automated verification. We outline the development of the FLASH
framework to include collisionless particles, permitting it to be used for

Power laws of complex systems from Extreme physical information
Many complex systems obey allometric, or power, laws y=Yx^{a}. Here y is the
measured value of some system attribute a, Y is a constant, and x is a
stochastic variable. Remarkably, for many living systems the exponent a is
limited to values +or- n/4, n=0,1,2... Here x is the mass of a randomly
selected creature in the population. These quarter-power laws hold for many
attributes, such as pulse rate (n=-1). Allometry has, in the past, been
theoretically justified on a case-by-case basis. An ultimate goal is to find a
common cause for allometry of all types and for both living and nonliving
systems. The principle I - J = extrem. of Extreme physical information (EPI) is
found to provide such a cause. It describes the flow of Fisher information J =>
I from an attribute value a on the cell level to its exterior observation y.
Data y are formed via a system channel function y = f(x,a), with f(x,a) to be
found. Extremizing the difference I - J through variation of f(x,a) results in
a general allometric law f(x,a)= y = Yx^{a}. Darwinian evolution is presumed to
cause a second extremization of I - J, now with respect to the choice of a. The
solution is a=+or-n/4, n=0,1,2..., defining the particular powers of biological
allometry. Under special circumstances, the model predicts that such biological
systems are controlled by but two distinct intracellular information sources.

First report of generalized face processing difficulties in möbius sequence.
Reverse simulation models of facial expression recognition suggest that we recognize the emotions of others by running implicit motor programmes responsible for the production of that expression. Previous work has tested this theory by examining facial expression recognition in participants with Möbius sequence, a condition characterized by congenital bilateral facial paralysis. However, a mixed pattern of findings has emerged, and it has not yet been tested whether these individuals can imagine facial expressions, a process also hypothesized to be underpinned by proprioceptive feedback from the face. We investigated this issue by examining expression recognition and imagery in six participants with Möbius sequence, and also carried out tests assessing facial identity and object recognition, as well as basic visual processing. While five of the six participants presented with expression recognition impairments, only one was impaired at the imagery of facial expressions. Further, five participants presented with other difficulties in the recognition of facial identity or objects, or in lower-level visual processing. We discuss the implications of our findings for the reverse simulation model, and suggest that facial identity recognition impairments may be more severe in the condition than has previously been noted

Onset of Convectionon a Pre-Runaway White Dwarf
Observed novae abundances and explosion energies estimated from observations
indicate that there must be significant mixing of the heavier material of the
white dwarf (C+O) into the lighter accreted material (H+He). Accordingly, nova
models must incorporate a mechanism that will dredge up the heavier white dwarf
material, and fluid motions from an early convection phase is one proposed
mechanism.
We present results from two-dimensional simulations of classical nova
precursor models that demonstrate the beginning of a convective phase during
the `simmering' of a Nova precursor. We use a new hydrostatic equilibrium
hydrodynamics module recently developed for the adaptive-mesh code FLASH. The
two-dimensional models are based on the one-dimensional models of Ami Glasner,
and were evolved with FLASH from a pre-convective state to the onset of
