From antiferromagnetism to d-wave superconductivity in the 2D t-J model
We have found that the two dimensional t-J model, for the physical parameter
range J/t = 0.4 reproduces the main experimental qualitative features of
High-Tc copper oxide superconductors: d-wave superconducting correlations are
strongly enhanced upon small doping and clear evidence of off diagonal long
range order is found at the optimal doping \delta ~ 0.15. On the other hand
antiferromagnetic long range order, clearly present at zero hole doping, is
suppressed at small hole density with clear absence of antiferromagnetism at
\delta >~ 0.1.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Exact bounds on the ground-state energy of the infinite-U Hubbard model
We give upper and lower bounds for the ground-state energy of the infinite-U
Hubbard model. In two dimensions, using these bounds we are able to rule out
the possibility of phase separation between the undoped-insulating state and an
hole-rich state.Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Electron-phonon coupling and electron self-energy in electron-doped graphene: calculation of angular resolved photoemission spectra
We obtain analytical expressions for the electron self-energy and the
electron-phonon coupling in electron-doped graphene using electron-phonon
matrix elements extracted from density functional theory simulations. From the
electron self-energies we calculate angle resolved photoemission spectra. We
demonstrate that the measured kink at eV from the Fermi level is
actually composed of two features, one at eV due to the
twofold degenerate E mode, and a second one at eV due to
the A mode. The electron-phonon coupling extracted from the kink
observed in ARPES experiments is roughly a factor of 5.5 larger than the
calculated one. This disagreement can only be partially reconciled by the
inclusion of resolution effects. Indeed we show that a finite resolution
increases the apparent electron-phonon coupling by underestimating the
renormalization of the electron velocity at energies larger than the kinks
positions. The discrepancy between theory and experiments is thus reduced to a
factor of 2.2. From the linewidth of the calculated ARPES spectra we
obtain the electron relaxation time. A comparison with available experimental
data in graphene shows that the electron relaxation time detected in ARPES is
almost two orders of magnitudes smaller than what measured by other
experimental techniques.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, see also Matteo Calandra and Francesco Mauri,

Function Maximization with Dynamic Quantum Search
Finding the maximum value of a function in a dynamic model plays an important
role in many application settings, including discrete optimization in the
presence of hard constraints. We present an iterative quantum algorithm for
finding the maximum value of a function in which prior search results update
the acceptable response. Our approach is based on quantum search and utilizes a
dynamic oracle function to mark items in a specified input set. As a
realization of function optimization, we verify the correctness of the
algorithm using numerical simulations of quantum circuits for the Knapsack
problem. Our simulations make use of an explicit oracle function based on
arithmetic operations and a comparator subroutine, and we verify these
implementations using numerical simulations up to 30 qubits.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Workshop on Quantum technology and

RAPPORTO ENERGIA 2015 Monitoraggio sull’energia in Sicilia
Non-destructive distinction between geogenic and anthropogenic calcite by Raman spectroscopy combined with machine learning workflow
Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, the possibility of distinguishing between geogenic and anthropogenic calcite in a non-destructive and effective way. Geogenic calcite derives from natural sedimentary and metamorphic rocks whereas anthropogenic calcite is formed artificially due to the carbonation process in mortars and plaster lime binders. Currently, their distinction is a major unaddressed issue although it is crucial across several fields such as 14C dating of historical mortars to avoid contamination with carbonate aggregates, investigating the origins of pigments, and studying the origins of sediments, to name a few. In this paper, we address this unmet need combining high-resolution micro-Raman spectroscopy with data mining and machine learning methods. This approach provides an effective means of obtaining robust and representative Raman datasets from which samples’ origins can be effectively deduced; moreover, a distinction between sedimentary and metamorphic calcite has been also highlighted. The samples, chemically identical, exhibit systematic and reliable differences in Raman band positions, band shape and intensity, which are likely related to the degree of structural order and polarization effects
Hole-depletion of ladders in SrCuO induced by correlation effects

Structure measurements and state of the art electronic structure calculations
that include core-hole and correlation effects in a mean-field approach.
Contrary to all previous analysis, based on semi-empirical models, we show that
correlations and antiferromagnetic ordering favor the strong chain
hole-attraction. For the remaining small number of holes accommodated on
ladders, leg-sites are preferred to rung-sites. The small hole affinity of
rung-sites explains naturally the 1D - 2D cross-over in the phase diagram of

Thermodynamic stabilities of ternary metal borides: An ab initio guide for synthesizing layered superconductors
Density functional theory calculations have been used to identify stable
layered Li--B crystal structure phases derived from a recently proposed
binary metal-sandwich (MS) lithium monoboride superconductor. We show that the
MS lithium monoboride gains in stability when alloyed with electron-rich metal
diborides; the resulting ordered LiB ternary phases may form
under normal synthesis conditions in a wide concentration range of for a
number of group-III-V metals . In an effort to pre-select compounds with the
strongest electron-phonon coupling we examine the softening of the in-plane
boron phonon mode at in a large class of metal borides. Our results
reveal interesting general trends for the frequency of the in-plane boron
phonon modes as a function of the boron-boron bond length and the valence of
the metal. One of the candidates with a promise to be an MgB-type
superconductor, LiAlB, has been examined in more detail: according to
our {\it ab initio} calculations of the phonon dispersion and the
electron-phonon coupling , the compound should have a critical
temperature of K.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PR
