    Unary FA-presentable semigroups

    Automatic presentations, also called FA-presentations, were introduced to extend nite model theory to innite structures whilst retaining the solubility of interesting decision problems. A particular focus of research has been the classication of those structures of some species that admit automatic presentations. Whilst some successes have been obtained, this appears to be a dicult problem in general. A restricted problem, also of signicant interest, is to ask this question for unary automatic presentations: auto-matic presentations over a one-letter alphabet. This paper studies unary FA-presentable semigroups. We prove the following: Every unary FA-presentable structure admits an injective unary automatic presentation where the language of representatives consists of every word over a one-letter alphabet. Unary FA-presentable semigroups are locally nite, but non-nitely generated unary FA-presentable semigroups may be innite. Every unary FA-presentable semigroup satises some Burnside identity.We describe the Green's relations in unary FA-presentable semigroups. We investigate the relationship between the class of unary FA-presentable semigroups and various semigroup constructions.     Measurement of Two-Qubit States by a Two-Island Single Electron Transistor

    We solve the master equations of two charged qubits measured by a single-electron transistor (SET) consisted of two islands. We show that in the sequential tunneling regime the SET current can be used for reading out results of quantum calculations and providing evidences of two-qubit entanglement, especially when the interaction between the two qubits is weak

    Evidence for chorus-driven electron acceleration to relativistic energies from a survey of geomagnetically disturbed periods

    [1] We perform a survey of the plasma wave and particle data from the CRRES satellite during 26 geomagnetically disturbed periods to investigate the viability of a local stochastic electron acceleration mechanism to relativistic energies driven by Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonant interactions with whistler mode chorus. Relativistic electron flux enhancements associated with moderate or strong storms may be seen over the whole outer zone (3 < L < 7), typically peaking in the range 4 < L < 5, whereas those associated with weak storms and intervals of prolonged substorm activity lacking a magnetic storm signature (PSALMSS) are typically observed further out in the regions 4 < L < 7 and 4.5 < L < 7, respectively. The most significant relativistic electron flux enhancements are seen outside of the plasmapause and are associated with periods of prolonged substorm activity with AE greater than 100 nT for a total integrated time greater than 2 days or greater than 300 nT for a total integrated time greater than 0.7 days. These events are also associated with enhanced fluxes of seed electrons and enhanced lower-band chorus wave power with integrated lower-band chorus wave intensities of greater than 500 pT(2) day. No significant flux enhancements are seen unless the level of substorm activity is sufficiently high. These results are consistent with a local, stochastic, chorus-driven electron acceleration mechanism involving the energization of a seed population of electrons with energies of a few hundred keV to relativistic energies operating on a timescale of the order of days

    Indices of apoptosis and proliferation as potential prognostic markers in non-functioning pituitary adenomas

    OBJECTIVE: Non-functioning pituitary adenomas (NFAs) are a distinct group of pituitary adenomas, which comprise approximately 20% of pituitary adenomas. Although most pituitary adenomas are benign, there is a subset of adenomas that behaves in an aggressive fashion, with either invasion of the surrounding structures or recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the behaviour of NFAs can be predicted using immunohistochemical markers that label proliferating and apoptotic cells, including a new marker for apoptosis (M30 CytoDEATH). This is the first study to analyse both the proliferation labelling index (LI) and the apoptotic index (AI) in NFAs and to correlate the labelling indices of these histological markers with tumor growth rate as measured by 2 postoperative MRI scans. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 40 patients in total were included in the study. 20 patients with high growth rate and percentage change in the pituitary adenoma volume as assessed on 2 postoperative MRI scans were age/sex matched to 20 patients with low growth rate or percentage change.RESULTS: There is no significant statistical difference of the histological and immunohistochemical indices assessed between cases and controls.CONCLUSION: The routine assessment of the proliferation and the apoptotic markers used in this study in NFAs has no prognostic value
